Kai arrived at the official docks of Water 7 as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting an amber glow over the bustling harbor. The air was thick with the scent of saltwater and freshly cut lumber, mingling with the occasional metallic tang from tools and machinery. His footsteps echoed against the stone pathway as he approached the berth reserved for government vessels.
The sight of the ship made him stop dead in his tracks.
"Well," Kai muttered under his breath, crossing his arms as he took in the massive vessel before him. "That's definitely the World Government logo. Subtle as ever."
The ship was a behemoth, its hull painted in pristine white that gleamed unnaturally, even in the fading light. The emblem of the World Government—a globe encircled by laurel branches—was emblazoned prominently on its side, as if daring anyone to mistake its allegiance. The vessel's design exuded authority and menace, with sleek lines that hinted at both power and speed.
As Kai's gaze swept across the ship, he noticed a series of markings near the bow. Squinting, he read the bold letters: CP5.
"CP... 5?" he mused aloud, scratching his chin. A sly grin crept onto his face as he tilted his head. "Are they supposed to be stronger than CP9? Or is this just some weird numbering system? Guess I'll find out soon enough."
Kai moved closer, keeping to the shadows cast by the crates and other dock equipment. His eyes darted between the ship and the dockworkers scurrying around. Most seemed ordinary enough—busy with their tasks and paying little attention to the world around them. But a handful stood out.
They were dressed sharply, too sharply for dockworkers, with suits that screamed "government spooks." Their movements were precise, their conversations hushed. Even from this distance, Kai could feel the aura of authority and danger they exuded.
He crouched behind a stack of wooden barrels, his mind racing as he considered his options.
"Alright, Kai," he muttered to himself, "let's break this down. That ship's big, which means it's probably packed with agents and whatever tech they're hiding. Charging in headfirst is just asking to get caught—or worse."
His eyes flicked to the gangplank leading onto the ship. Two agents stood guard at the base, their hands resting on the hilts of their swords. Their postures were relaxed, but their eyes were sharp, scanning the area like hawks.
"Stealth might be the better play," he continued, tapping his fingers on his thigh. "Get in, grab the blueprints, and get out before anyone even knows I'm there. But if things go sideways..." He glanced at the Cleanrot knight sword strapped to his side and smirked. "Well, I guess I'll improvise."
He leaned back against the barrels, watching the ship and its surroundings with a hunter's patience. His eyes gleamed in the dim light as he cataloged every detail—the positioning of the guards, the rhythm of their patrols, the intervals at which the dockworkers came and went.
"Timing's everything," he whispered, his grin widening. "Let's see how good CP5 really is."
Kai waited until the dockworkers were fully engrossed in their tasks and the patrol guards' rhythm became predictable. He took a deep breath, loosening his muscles. "Alright," he muttered under his breath, a grin playing on his lips. "Time to show these government dogs what agility looks like."
With fluid precision, Kai slipped out from behind the barrels and into the shadows cast by the towering ship. His movements were catlike—silent and deliberate. He darted between stacks of cargo and machinery, always staying just outside the guards' lines of sight.
As he approached the gangplank, he crouched low, his sharp eyes locking onto the two agents standing at its base. Their heads turned in slow, measured arcs, scanning for any sign of disturbance. Kai smirked. "Too slow," he murmured.
Waiting for the perfect moment, he timed his dash between their blind spots. In a flash, he crossed the open space and leapt, grabbing the edge of the ship's railing. Pulling himself up with effortless strength, he rolled onto the deck and pressed his back against the nearest wall. His heart pounded, but his grin widened.
"Phase one: complete," he whispered.
The deck was surprisingly quiet. Most of the crew seemed to be either below deck or stationed elsewhere. Still, Kai moved cautiously, sticking to the shadows and keeping his steps feather-light. He avoided areas where the faint sounds of voices or footsteps hinted at nearby activity, instead making his way toward the largest and most ornate door he could see.
"That's gotta be the captain's quarters," he guessed, studying the intricately carved wood. The emblem of the World Government was etched into its surface, alongside an engraved brass plaque that read Command Quarters.
Kai tested the handle. Locked. He huffed softly and reached into his belt pouch, pulling out a thin, metallic tool. "Good thing I've picked up a few tricks along the way."
In less than a minute, the lock clicked open. Kai slipped inside, closing the door behind him with a soft click.
The quarters were spacious, far more luxurious than he'd expected for a government ship. A large desk dominated the room, its surface cluttered with stacks of paper, maps, and sealed documents. Shelves lined the walls, crammed with books, charts, and what appeared to be navigation equipment.
Kai took a moment to appreciate the craftsmanship. "Government spooks sure live well," he muttered, running a hand over the polished wood of the desk.
Wasting no time, he began his search. He opened drawers, rifled through stacks of papers, and scanned every piece of parchment he came across. Many of the documents were routine—a ledger of supplies, a roster of crew members—but then his fingers brushed against something that made him pause.
Pulling it out, he unfolded a large, detailed blueprint. His eyes widened as he realized it was a design for a ship—an intricate one, far more advanced than any he'd seen before.
"This has to be it," he murmured, studying the details. But as he continued searching, he found more blueprints, each one depicting different vessels with varying features. His excitement turned to frustration.
"Which one of these is for the Calm Belt tech?" he muttered. He frowned, glancing at the growing stack of blueprints in his hand.
Then he smirked. "Guess I'll take them all. Better safe than sorry."
He rolled the blueprints tightly and secured them with a piece of twine he found in the desk. Stuffing the bundle into his bag, he took one last glance around the room to make sure he hadn't missed anything important.
Kai froze mid-step, his hand brushing the door handle. A chilling voice cut through the silence of the room, low and sinister, dripping with menace.
"Did you find what you were looking for, pirate?"
Kai's eyes widened, his breath catching in his throat. He spun around instinctively, only for a sharp, searing pain to explode in his back. He hadn't even sensed the intruder's presence.
"Shigan!"
The word echoed like a death knell, and Kai felt the deadly technique's force as a finger pierced clean through his torso, leaving a bloody hole that burned with agonizing precision. The impact staggered him, and he stumbled forward, gripping the edge of the desk to steady himself. Blood dripped onto the polished wood, the crimson stain spreading ominously.
"Dammit," Kai growled through gritted teeth, spinning around to face his attacker.
Standing before him was a tall figure clad in a dark suit, their posture composed yet radiating lethal intent. The agent's piercing eyes glinted with cold amusement, and their fingers flexed as if ready to strike again at any moment.
Kai's hand instinctively went to his sword, the familiar weight of it grounding him despite the pain coursing through his body. He groaned as he unsheathed it, blood seeping from the wound in his side.
"I was naive," Kai admitted, his voice low but steady. He straightened up, ignoring the throbbing agony in his chest. "I forgot you Cipher Pol types are trained for assassination. Guess I let my guard down."
The agent smirked, taking a slow step forward. "You're right about that. You're not dealing with amateurs here. And breaking into a government ship? Bold, but foolish. You've just made your last mistake, pirate."
Kai tightened his grip on his blade, his eyes narrowing as he sized up his opponent. "I don't make the same mistake twice."
