Chapter 583: Let's Make a Deal
After talking with Peter, just let it be. Peter isn't really managing things now. He's about to leave Manhattan for Washington, D.C., and the more he does, the more likely he'll mess up, which might affect future plans, so he's just keeping tabs without getting involved in the complicated cases that Hughes would have intervened in when he was around to help Jimmy.
Jimmy arrived at Ruiz's office. Ruiz glanced at him, waved, picked up his suit, and the two headed downstairs together.
Late at night, in the office building, all the federal agencies had already left except for a few doing overtime work, so there were not many people downstairs. Jimmy took out a pack of cigarettes and gave Ruiz one. They stood in a corner downstairs, lighting cigarettes. In the dim light, two red dots flickered alternately.
Ruiz: "Tell me in detail."
Jimmy nodded, first explaining the reason he was tailing Louis, and then the situation where he discovered he was meeting up with Seventeen.
Jimmy: "I didn't realize it was Seventeen at first, they just parked by the roadside and then drove straight to the Morris warehouse district. It wasn't until they got out of the car outside the warehouse that I noticed that the bald guy was Seventeen."
Ruiz: "Are you sure?"
Jimmy: "Yes, it's the contact info you gave me long ago. I've seen him two or three times, I have an impression."
Ruiz: "Hmm, and then?"
Jimmy: "Seventeen and Louis went into the warehouse first. Two other guys stayed at the warehouse entrance. After they went in, I called you, then I heard gunshots from over there, and the guys at the door opened the rolling shutter to go inside the warehouse.
I don't know who Seventeen really is, but I was worried something might go wrong on his side, so I turned on the police lights and siren and charged over. When I got to the warehouse door, I could still hear gunshots inside, followed by routine shouting and then hearing noises from behind the warehouse. I circled around and found seven people running out from the back door of the warehouse, among them were Seventeen and Louis.
I didn't pursue them all, just four. The hospital said one was seriously injured and couldn't be saved, he's dead, the remaining three have all gone through surgery now."
Ruiz: "Any preliminary results from the crime scene investigation?"
Jimmy: "Two people died in the warehouse, one of them looks a lot like the target I'm looking for, Marco. I've already contacted the forensic doctor's office to expedite the DNA verification, and we also got fingerprint information, waiting for results from forensics."
Ruiz: "What's in the warehouse?"
Jimmy: "Mostly furniture and building materials. There's a portion of the back of the warehouse separated as a living space, confirming someone was living there."
Ruiz: "No contraband?"
Jimmy: "Not thoroughly investigated yet. The forensics team still needs to investigate further. Nearby warehouses need to be checked for surveillance. If there is, maybe we can find out who exactly was living inside. Also need to investigate the company owning the warehouse to verify the individuals renting the warehouse."
Ruiz thought for a moment, "Don't follow up on the Seventeen matter yet, first handle your case. The murder in the warehouse might be a gang-related vendetta, I'll assign someone to follow up."
Jimmy: "Understood, I'll be watching Marco and Louis."
Ruiz threw away his cigarette butt, "Let's go."
Jimmy checked the time, didn't go back upstairs, got in his car, and drove home to rest.
Louis is a known member of the Mafia, can't escape from that. The key thing is, at the time, focusing on the four who were shot, he didn't get to chase after Louis straight away. A few hours have passed, if he wanted to run, he'd be long gone.
Another issue is, Jimmy followed from Harlem but didn't have any direct contact or collect conclusive evidence from the warehouse side. Jimmy couldn't just go to his house to arrest him, also couldn't apply for a search warrant.
The next day, arriving at the office, Jimmy first investigated the warehouse situation and contacted the management company of the warehouse.
The warehouse was rented by a home decor company already for several years, consistently paying and renewing, the furniture and building materials seen in the warehouse yesterday corroborated this fact. At least from the entrance of the warehouse, you see this kind of materials.
The living space was hidden behind the materials, so if it was arranged by their personnel internally, theoretically, it wouldn't be discovered by anyone, as long as caution was exercised when extracting materials.
Jimmy checked the home decor company's information and went out directly to investigate.
The home decor company was easy to find, the FBI credentials were very effective, given the shootout happened in the warehouse yesterday with two people dead, such a big issue wasn't something a home decor company could refuse FBI investigation.
Soon enough, a warehouse manager was already at the company, Jimmy: "Are you managing the warehouse? Who is living inside?"
The warehouse manager, Millie, was an old man, "It's my nephew Tommy living there. When he came to New York he had no money, so I helped him find a place to live."
Jimmy: "Yesterday, two people were shot dead in the warehouse, but neither was named Tommy."
Millie: "Thomas Milly, that's his name, short curly hair."
Jimmy nodded: "Where are his family?"
Millie: "In Georgia. Can I go see him?"
Jimmy: "Yes, but answer a few questions first. Does your company know he's living in the warehouse? What does he do usually?"
Millie expressionlessly shook his head, "Our manager knows I arranged for him to live here, I've been in the company over ten years. Thomas didn't have a job, but I rarely interacted with him, so I'm not sure what he does."
