Chapter 78: Chapter 78: Land of Rain, Lady Yuki
Obito's figure silently appeared within the barrier.
The moment he entered, he heard voices conversing nearby. Quickly, he leaped onto the rafters, concealed himself, and peered toward the inner room.
Inside, Yuki sat on the table with one leg crossed over the other. Kneeling before her were two shinobi.
Her every movement exuded an air of nobility, far removed from the demeanor of an ordinary apothecary owner. Her usually seductive phoenix eyes were now cold and indifferent, carrying a commanding aura akin to that of a queen.
Obito was stunned.
Even more surprising were the shinobi kneeling before her. Their attire and demeanor clearly marked them not as Konoha shinobi but as ninja of Amegakure.
"Yuki...!" Obito thought, as though struck by lightning.
How had he not realized this earlier?
Yuki was no ordinary woman—she was a noble of Amegakure!
A wave of regret swept over him. He should've pieced it together long ago.
But why had Yuki left the Land of Rain to live in Konoha?
Obito sharpened his senses, listening closely to the conversation in the room.
One of the Amegakure shinobi spoke in a low voice:
"Lady Yuki, our nation and people need you now more than ever."
The second shinobi nodded in agreement.
"The Great Nations wage war across our lands, and within, a group calling itself 'Akatsuki' seeks to overthrow the Land of Rain. Our country is in turmoil, torn apart by external threats and internal strife. Please, return to us and take charge!"
Yuki scoffed, her face revealing a trace of mockery.
"And my foolish younger brother? Was he removed by Hanzō because he stood in his way?"
One of the shinobi hesitated but quickly replied,
"Lady Yuki, you jest. Lord Hanzō has always been loyal to the royal family. Such accusations are baseless."
"Your brother simply lacked the aptitude to fulfill his duties."
Yuki shook her head.
"Loyalty? Don't make me laugh. My tyrannical father met his end because Hanzō conspired with Konoha to eliminate him."
Her sharp words struck like daggers.
"Had it not been for you leaking my father's whereabouts to Konoha repeatedly, the White Fang could never have succeeded."
The two shinobi exchanged uneasy glances. Yuki's intelligence and insight left them at a loss. She had seen through everything—and was sick of it. That was why she had abandoned the country she despised.
Completing their mission under Lord Hanzō's orders seemed increasingly impossible.
Finally, one of the shinobi steeled himself and spoke again.
"Lady Yuki, Hanzō-sama has already allied with Shimura Danzō of Konoha to eliminate the Akatsuki. Once the organization is eradicated, Hanzō-sama hopes you will return and assume your rightful position as ruler of the Land of Rain."
Yuki's voice turned icy.
"Hah, return? To be Hanzō's puppet? Never!"
Her decisiveness left the shinobi silent, the room descending into a heavy stillness.
Meanwhile, Obito, perched on the rafters, was reeling from the revelation. The sheer amount of information from their conversation was overwhelming.
He began piecing everything together.
Firstly, Hanzō was the true power behind the Land of Rain. He intended to bring Yuki back to serve as his figurehead for ruling the nation.
Secondly, Yuki's father had been killed by Konoha's White Fang, as a result of a collaboration between Amegakure and Konoha.
And yet, despite her past, Yuki didn't seem to harbor hatred for Konoha.
Lastly, Hanzō planned to ally with Danzō to destroy the Akatsuki, meaning the catastrophic events Obito knew of hadn't happened yet.
Obito's eyes lit up with understanding. He now knew what he had to do.
Just as he was lost in thought, one of the Amegakure shinobi stood and broke the silence.
"Forgive us, Lady Yuki, but we must insist you come with us. This is Lord Hanzō's command."
The second shinobi followed suit, both of them advancing toward Yuki.
Yuki smirked, her tone playful.
"Oh? Finally done pretending, are we?"
Suddenly, a ding! sounded in Obito's mind, startling him so much he almost fell off the rafters.
Before his eyes, a set of options appeared:
[Option 1]: Intervene and help Yuki. Reward: +1 Yuki Affection.
[Option 2]: Stay hidden and let events unfold. Reward: Stealth Mastery.
[Option 3]: Report the incident to the Third Hokage. Reward: 0.05 Chakra Points.
Obito furrowed his brows. Stealth Mastery? If I'm intervening, shouldn't I get a title like Protector or something?
Options two and three were out of the question. Yuki had always treated him well. Even without the reward, he would step in to help.
That said, what was he supposed to do with +1 Yuki Affection? He wasn't playing a dating sim!
Still, he made his decision.
Option 1.
In an instant, Obito leapt down from the rafters, landing silently behind one of the shinobi. With a swift chop to the neck, he knocked the man unconscious.
The other shinobi spun around in shock, only to be met with a vicious kick to his groin from Yuki.
Crack.
Obito winced as he heard the distinct sound of something breaking. The shinobi let out a pained howl, doubling over.
Yuki glanced at the dazed Obito and scolded him.
"What are you standing there for? Hurry up and—"
Her voice trailed off as she followed Obito's gaze, realizing her skirt had ridden up during the fight. Her pale cheeks flushed a deep red.
"Pervert!" she snapped, grabbing a nearby vase and smashing it over the already-disabled shinobi's head.
Obito shuddered, recognizing the murderous glint in her eyes. That vase had been meant for him!
[Choice successful! Reward received: +1 Yuki Affection.]
Yuki huffed and pulled a small vial from her pocket, handing it to Obito.
"Here."
Obito blinked, confused.
"What's this for?"
Yuki rolled her eyes dramatically.
"Dear Chūnin, has it really been so long since we last met that you've forgotten me?"
Obito scratched his head, embarrassed.
"You knew it was me?"
"Of course I did," she sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose.
"You think wearing that ridiculous mask makes you unrecognizable? Take it off—it's hideous."
