Chapter 164: Chapter 164: Respective Decisions
Though decades had passed since their last meeting, Jiraiya instantly recognized the figure standing before him as the Deva Path.
"What's going on? Yahiko... isn't he supposed to be dead?" Jiraiya's thoughts raced. "And why does Yahiko have Nagato's Rinnegan?"
Fixing his gaze on those haunting Rinnegan eyes, Jiraiya asked firmly, "Yahiko is dead... so what's going on, Nagato?"
"Yahiko is indeed dead," the Deva Path replied calmly, raising its palm toward Jiraiya. "What remains is 'Pain.' Knowing this makes no difference, Jiraiya-sensei. Bansho Ten'in!"
An invisible gravitational force spread from the Deva Path's hand, seizing Jiraiya and pulling him forward as if an enormous unseen hand had grabbed him.
"Another ability of the Rinnegan?" Jiraiya grunted as he felt his body being dragged toward his opponent.
Shima quickly reacted, extending her tongue to wrap around a sturdy steel pipe. She anchored herself, Fukasaku, and Jiraiya, halting their forced movement. "These Rinnegan abilities are truly bizarre. We can't hold out like this!"
"Got it!" Fukasaku shouted, firing his sharp tongue toward the Deva Path to disrupt the ability.
The Deva Path was forced to retract its arm and step back to avoid the attack. Unexpectedly, Fukasaku's tongue curved mid-air, bending 180 degrees to strike again.
"Shinra Tensei!" The Deva Path deflected the tongue with a repelling force, sending it digging deep into a nearby concrete wall.
"Now's our chance!"
Using his tongue as an anchor, Fukasaku flung himself toward the Deva Path, carrying Jiraiya with him.
Boom! Jiraiya landed a powerful kick on the Deva Path's raised arms, sending it staggering. Seizing the opening, Jiraiya grappled with the Deva Path, locking it in close combat.
With the strength of Sage Mode enhancing him, Jiraiya overwhelmed the Deva Path, delivering a flurry of blows. Finally, spotting a gap in its defense, he formed a Rasengan and aimed it at the Deva Path's abdomen.
"Shinra Tensei!"
Just before the Rasengan struck, a powerful repelling force launched Jiraiya backward, sending him crashing through several walls and steel pipes before he finally landed on a cracked wall.
"That ability seems to manipulate gravity, allowing him to attract or repel things," Fukasaku observed.
"Then isn't it impossible to land a hit?" Shima asked.
"Not quite," Jiraiya replied, brushing off the debris. "If that were true, he would've repelled me as soon as we engaged in close combat. Instead, he waited until I used the Rasengan."
"Are you saying his ability has a cooldown or limitation?" Fukasaku asked.
"Exactly," Jiraiya nodded. "But I need to test it further to confirm."
The Deva Path, silently watching from a distance, sighed internally. As expected of Jiraiya-sensei—he's already identified my weakness.
Its gaze shifted to Kirito, who remained perched on a high tower, observing the battle. The Deva Path's thoughts darkened. If it weren't for this boy, I would've been able to deal with Jiraiya easily. But I didn't anticipate him eliminating five Pains in one battle.
Though the other Pains could be revived after the fight, the Deva Path knew it couldn't handle both Kirito and Jiraiya alone.
"I have no choice..." The Deva Path looked toward an uninhabited area. "I need to move the battlefield and buy time to refine chakra."
Shima broke the silence, her voice low. "Boy, I've been meaning to ask—do you know this Pain?"
"Yes," Jiraiya admitted. "The Deva Path was once my student, Yahiko. But Yahiko died a long time ago... and I don't know why he's alive now, or how he possesses Nagato's Rinnegan."
"And this one looks different. How many Pains are there?" Fukasaku asked incredulously, glancing at the wreckage of the fallen Pains scattered nearby.
"My intuition tells me that this is the last one. The others... Kirito must've dealt with them."
Fukasaku studied the battlefield. "Unbelievable. To defeat five Pains single-handedly... Tsunade certainly picked a prodigy as her apprentice."
"Then why don't you join forces with him to defeat the last one?" Shima asked, annoyed. "Is it that old prophecy again?"
Jiraiya fell silent for a moment before replying. "I've had many regrets in my life. But I've always believed in the mission of finding and guiding the Child of Prophecy. It's my destiny, my responsibility.
"Nagato has gone astray, and I know this moment is my choice to make. I must see it through, no matter the outcome."
Shima sighed. "Fine, fine. If that's your decision, I'll stick with you until the end."
"Same here," Fukasaku added with a warm smile. "We're with you, Little Jiraiya."
"Thank you both..." Jiraiya said, bowing his head deeply in gratitude.
Suddenly, the Deva Path raised its arms toward Jiraiya.
"Let's eliminate the weaker link first," it declared.
"Bansho Ten'in!"
Once again, Jiraiya felt the gravitational pull dragging him toward the Deva Path. But this time, Fukasaku and Shima were ready. Their tongues lashed out, aiming for the Deva Path's vital points.
Clang, clang! The Deva Path drew a black rod, deflecting the tongues. Then, without further delay, it turned and retreated.
"Where is he going?" Shima wondered aloud.
"Could this be a trap?" Fukasaku added.
Jiraiya's eyes narrowed. "Trap or not, I won't let him get away." Without hesitation, he gave chase.
