Chapter 163: Chapter 163: Surprise!
As Kirito battled the Six Paths of Pain, Jiraiya and the two Toad Sages perched on his shoulders finally came to an agreement.
"Little Jiraiya, once we start our duet, it can't be interrupted. Make sure to protect us and keep Payne from getting close," Fukasaku instructed, his hands clasped together.
Jiraiya, looking down the eerily silent corridor, didn't respond. Instead, he muttered, "Pa, Ma, don't you think it's too quiet?"
Shima, who had also begun forming hand seals, paused and frowned. "The boy's right. I don't hear anything at all from the enemy. It's strange."
The trio had deliberately retreated to a narrow corridor lined with steel pipes. Not only did this create an ideal environment for a one-on-one confrontation, but the steel pipes would carry the sound of any approaching enemies, providing ample warning.
But now, in the eerie stillness, there was no sound or movement from Pain. Even with their heightened perception in Sage Mode, Jiraiya and the Toad Sages sensed nothing—no footsteps, no signs of life.
"Could this be some kind of ability?" Fukasaku speculated.
Jiraiya shook his head. "I don't think so. If they had an undetectable ability like that, they would've caught up to us by now."
"Could they have stopped chasing us altogether?" Shima asked. "If so, should we still sing?"
Fukasaku considered it. "It's possible... but why wouldn't they pursue us?"
Hearing this, Jiraiya's eyes suddenly widened. "Wait... could it be?!"
BOOM!
A thunderous explosion echoed through the corridor, causing the steel pipes to vibrate violently.
"Was that the bald Payne?" Fukasaku asked in alarm.
Shima closed her eyes, sensing the source of the noise. "It came from where we last fought Payne... near Kirito's position."
Before Shima could finish her thought, Jiraiya bolted down the corridor, heading toward the source of the sound.
"What's going on, Jiraiya? What did you realize?"
"I think Nagato turned back to deal with Kirito!" Jiraiya replied urgently. "After I left, he must've decided to target him instead."
Fukasaku's eyes widened. "And while we were debating the song, we didn't notice right away..."
"That boy's in serious danger now!" Shima exclaimed. "Even we struggled with three Pains—how can he handle all six on his own?"
"I have to support him," Jiraiya said grimly. "This fight is supposed to be between me and Nagato. If Kirito gets hurt because of me, Tsunade will never forgive me—and I won't forgive myself either."
Tsunade's faith in Kirito was second only to her hope for Naruto, who carried on Nawaki's legacy. As one of Konoha's most promising young talents, Kirito symbolized the village's future alongside Naruto. Jiraiya couldn't let his own battle cost Konoha that future.
Meanwhile, at the base of the tower, the Naraka Path approached the smoldering remains of the Animal Path. Raising its hand, it summoned the King of Hell, its terrifying maw opening to grasp the broken body of the Animal Path.
As the Naraka Path began its resurrection, a crimson hand suddenly shot out from the burning wreckage, gripping its neck tightly.
"What's happening?!"
The Naraka Path gasped as molten lava seared through its throat, melting its flesh and leaving only the cervical spine holding its head.
From the remains of the Animal Path emerged a figure made entirely of magma. Kirito's molten form stood before the Naraka Path, a wicked grin on his face.
"Surprise!" Kirito quipped.
The lava consumed the Naraka Path in seconds, leaving it a charred husk.
Watching from the tower above, the Deva Path observed the scene with narrowed eyes. "Did he hide a clone inside the Animal Path? Or was the one above just a decoy?"
Although the Deva Path wanted to intervene, it couldn't risk leaving the Human Path undefended. If it moved, Kirito would undoubtedly target the Human Path next, leaving only the Deva Path to fight.
Realizing it was too late to save the Naraka Path, the Deva Path decided to focus on rescuing the Preta Path, whose chakra was still being drained by the wooden dragon.
As the Human Path charged at Kirito with a black rod, Kirito met it with a burning fist, shattering the rod and driving the Human Path into the ground with a single blow.
Meanwhile, the Deva Path reached the Preta Path, which was now encased in a massive wooden dragon. Just as the Deva Path prepared to unleash Shinra Tensei, the dragon tightened its grip, sprouting razor-sharp branches that transformed it into a spiked "cactus ball."
"Shinra Tensei!"
The Deva Path's almighty push blasted away the wooden branches and freed the Preta Path, but it was too late. The Preta Path, riddled with holes from the spiked branches, collapsed lifelessly to the ground.
Standing atop the tower, Kirito looked down at the Deva Path. "Now it's just you. If you'd gone after Jiraiya instead, none of this would've happened."
The Deva Path remained calm despite the odds. "You're stronger than Jiraiya, but you're still no match for a god."
"Super Big Ball Rasengan!"
Jiraiya's voice boomed as he appeared behind the Deva Path, wielding a massive Rasengan aimed at its back.
"Shinra Tensei!"
A powerful force repelled Jiraiya, sending him flying. He twisted mid-air and landed on a drainage pipe, his feet skidding to a halt.
"NAGATO!" Jiraiya shouted, his voice echoing through the wreckage. "Your opponent is—"
But as Jiraiya looked up, his eyes widened in shock.
"Wait... you... you're..."
