Chapter 160: Chapter 160: Sage Mode
As Kirito arrived at the top of a tall tower with Konan on his back, Jiraiya could be seen below, evading a colossal rhinoceros summoned by the Animal Path. He leaped nimbly across pipes and ledges, keeping just ahead of the charging creature.
Seeing Jiraiya clasp his hands together, a glowing light appearing between them, he called out to Toad Ken: "Gama Ken, I'm ready. You can retreat now."
"Understood. It's a relief I managed to hold out this long," Toad Ken replied, disappearing in a puff of smoke.
The moment before Jiraiya landed from Toad Ken's disappearance, the charging rhinoceros surged forward and flung Jiraiya with its massive, hardened horns.
Boom! Jiraiya's body crashed into a wall lined with pipes, filling the air with smoke and debris.
"Moo~" The rhinoceros, its hooves scraping the ground, prepared to charge again, ready to attack Jiraiya as soon as he reappeared.
Swish! But emerging from the smoke wasn't Jiraiya himself—it was a massive Rasengan.
"Super Big Ball Rasengan!"
"Moo—"
Boom, boom, boom! The gigantic Rasengan smashed the rhinoceros to the ground with immense force, tearing apart both the beast and the surrounding terrain. The nearby towers trembled under the impact.
Within the dissipating dust cloud, two petite Toad Sages, Fukasaku and Shima, perched on Jiraiya's shoulders.
"Every time, he calls us out at the most chaotic moments. No wonder Gamabunta always complains," Shima grumbled.
"Now, now, Ma. Little Jiraiya must have been in a tough spot to summon us. Let's cut him some slack," Fukasaku said calmly.
"Always making excuses for him, Pa."
"Pa and Ma, I'm sorry to trouble you again," Jiraiya said respectfully. "This time, we're up against someone with the Rinnegan."
"The Rinnegan? You mean the eyes from the legends?" Shima asked, her voice tinged with alarm.
"Yes, the same eyes that the Sage of Six Paths once possessed."
"In that case, we'll need to go all out..."
The dust cleared, revealing Jiraiya's transformed appearance. Red markings extended across his face, his eyes now resembling those of a toad, and his nose had grown larger. A beard sprouted from his chin, giving him the visage of a powerful Sage.
Sitting atop the tower, Kirito's eyes lit up with excitement. "It's here! Finally! This is so worth it!"
In his previous life, watching Jiraiya enter Sage Mode for the first time on television had been a thrilling experience. Never in his wildest dreams did he imagine he'd witness this iconic moment in person.
His excitement wasn't about power—after all, Kirito had long since mastered the ability to enter Sage Mode instantly. Instead, it was about reliving a classic moment and revisiting the nostalgia of his youth.
"Is that... Master Jiraiya's ninjutsu?" Konan, sitting next to Kirito, asked as she observed Jiraiya's new form.
After setting Konan down, Kirito slightly reduced the effects of the vines binding her, allowing her to regain enough strength to sit and watch. Carrying her around had grown tiresome.
"That's right," Kirito explained cheerfully. "It's your teacher's trump card—his most powerful form. It seems he's serious about defeating Nagato. Otherwise, he wouldn't bring out his strongest technique."
"Pain is a god. A god cannot lose," Konan replied quietly.
Kirito merely smiled. "Let's wait and see."
Back on the ground, Shima squinted as she scanned the area. "Something's odd. Am I just getting old? Jiraiya-boy, where is this Rinnegan wielder?"
"He's hiding in a summoned creature that can turn itself invisible, Ma," Jiraiya replied.
Even with his heightened perception in Sage Mode, Jiraiya struggled to pinpoint Pain's exact location, relying instead on his ongoing barrier technique to sense his opponent's position.
"What about those two over there?" Fukasaku asked, noticing Kirito and Konan seated atop a nearby tower.
Realizing they were in view, Jiraiya introduced them. "The man's name is Kirito. He's Tsunade's disciple and my partner for this mission. The woman is Konan, one of my former students. She's now allied with the enemy, though Kirito seems to have captured her."
"Tsunade's disciple? But why can't I sense his chakra? It seems Tsunade hasn't taken on an ordinary person," Fukasaku asked, puzzled.
"That's part of his technique. Kirito can hide his chakra completely," Jiraiya explained. "Don't underestimate him—his strength is on par with mine."
"I see... He certainly doesn't look ordinary."
Shima interjected, "Enough chatter! Let's deal with this quickly. I need to get back to cooking dinner." Forming a hand seal, she declared, "If it's a summoned creature that turns invisible, we'll use biological detection: Sage Art: Tongue Binding!"
She extended her tongue, which appeared equipped with sensory organs, and quickly located the chameleon hiding nearby. In a flash, her tongue wrapped around the chameleon, spraying it with a corrosive acid that revealed its invisible form.
"Take this!" Shima slammed the restrained chameleon to the ground. "Your turn, Pa!"
"Got it! Sage Art: Tongue Blade!"
Fukasaku extended his tongue like a sharp blade, slicing through the chameleon and the pipes behind it.
Hissss— The chameleon let out a final cry before vanishing in smoke, revealing the Animal Path that had been hiding inside.
"So those are the legendary eyes..." Shima murmured, looking at the Rinnegan.
"They do look ominous," Fukasaku agreed. "Jiraiya-boy, how did you end up fighting an opponent like this?"
With a somber expression, Jiraiya replied, "He was once my student. But now he's gone astray. As his teacher, it's my responsibility to set things right."
"Your student?! Why didn't you tell us about this?" Fukasaku exclaimed. "If he was your student, then that means..."
"Yes," Jiraiya confirmed. "He may very well be the prophesied child the Great Toad Sage spoke of. But he's chosen the wrong path. I believe this moment is what the Great Toad Sage meant—it's time for me to make a choice."
