Chapter 158: Chapter 158: Two-on-Two
As Konan flew toward him, Kirito sighed helplessly and said to Jiraiya, "Looks like I can't just stay on the sidelines anymore."
"Don't underestimate Konan. She's far stronger now," Jiraiya warned.
Having clashed briefly with Konan, Jiraiya knew her Shikigami Dance could even overcome the inherent weakness of paper against fire. While he was confident in Kirito's abilities, he didn't want him to make the fatal mistake of underestimating his opponent.
"Be careful," Jiraiya added. "I'll be entering Sage Mode next, and it will take time to prepare. Hold your own until I deal with Nagato. Summoning Jutsu!"
With a puff of smoke, a massive purple-red toad wielding a shield and harpoon appeared under Jiraiya.
Standing atop the toad's head, Jiraiya spread his arms dramatically. "Before you stands the monster of Mount Myoboku, Jiraiya the Gallant—ahh!"
His pose was abruptly interrupted as the toad shifted, throwing him off balance.
"Still as clumsy as ever, Master Jiraiya," Payne observed coldly.
"Toad Ken, could you stop moving when I'm trying to look cool?!" Jiraiya shouted in frustration.
"Apologies... I'm just so useless," Toad Ken replied meekly.
"Never mind," Jiraiya muttered. Regaining his composure, he clasped his hands together. "Toad Ken, I'm summoning the Two Great Sages. Hold them off until I'm ready."
"Understood. I'll do my best," Toad Ken replied, raising his shield and harpoon.
Realizing Jiraiya was preparing a powerful jutsu, Payne knew he couldn't let him succeed. Summoning a massive chameleon mid-air, Payne jumped onto its back, and both vanished into thin air.
"Hiding, are you? Let's see how far that gets you," Jiraiya said, stomping his feet and activating a detection barrier. "Barrier: Dome of Heaven Technique!"
Before the barrier could pinpoint Payne's location, a giant, winged dog appeared, charging ferociously toward Jiraiya. Forced to redirect his focus, Jiraiya locked his barrier onto the Cerberus instead.
Toad Ken quickly raised his shield and harpoon, engaging the Cerberus to protect Jiraiya. The ground quaked from their clash as the massive beasts battled.
Meanwhile, Kirito faced off against Konan, who floated before him, her paper wings shimmering in the dim light.
"Let's move somewhere else," Kirito suggested. "I doubt you want to interfere with Payne and Jiraiya's battle."
Konan didn't reply. Instead, she silently commanded her paper to form countless sharp shurikens, which flew toward Kirito with a deadly hiss.
[So, no small talk, huh? Fine by me,] Kirito thought, stepping forward.
Thick, bubbling lava began forming around his arms, black smoke billowing from his shoulders. With a clenched fist, he punched toward Konan, sending a massive molten fist hurtling her way.
Boom!
The impact was deafening, shaking the entire tower and leaving a gaping, fiery hole in its side.
"Konan!"
Both Payne and Jiraiya turned their attention to the explosion. Concerned, Payne directed a split-off Cerberus to rush toward Kirito.
However, before the creature could reach him, a massive chunk of lava rained down, striking the Cerberus directly. The intense heat incinerated it instantly, preventing it from splitting further.
Konan reappeared near the hole, reforming from scattered paper. Her Akatsuki cloak was scorched, one sleeve burned off to reveal her pale arm and part of her black halter top.
[Even reinforced paper wasn't enough to fully block his lava attack...] Konan thought, brushing off faint embers from her damaged cloak.
"Just grazing it caused this much damage?" Payne, observing through his Rinnegan, considered whether to summon another path to assist Konan.
At the same time, Kirito vanished with a burst of speed, reappearing in front of Konan. His silver-glowing foot struck her midair, sending her hurtling out of the tower and into the lake outside.
"What's going on? I activated my Shikigami Dance! How did he hit me?" Konan thought as she tumbled through the air.
"Chakra and physical force together—Gentle Fist attacks both at once," Kirito explained, almost reading her thoughts.
As Konan splashed into the lake, molten lava followed, pouring down from above like a fiery cascade.
Boom!
However, the molten lava never reached Konan. A figure leapt in front of her, absorbing the magma into their body with ease.
"You're late," Konan said, looking up at the new Path standing protectively in front of her.
Payne's "Preta Path," a rotund figure with Rinnegan, absorbed the remaining magma and turned toward Kirito.
"You okay dealing with Master Jiraiya?" Konan asked Payne.
"I'm fine," Payne replied. "The Animal Path is enough to handle him."
The Preta Path stepped forward, addressing Kirito. "Your Ice and Lava Releases mean nothing to me. Bloodline Limit users like you are my specialty."
"Two against one?" Kirito said with a smirk. "Underestimating your teacher like that? Don't tell me you think you'll need just the two of you to take me on."
"We'll see how bold you are once your ninjutsu is sealed," the Preta Path said calmly, pulling a black rod from its sleeve.
