Chapter 157: Chapter 157: The Long-lost Master and Apprentice
The tallest pipeline tower on the west side of the Hidden Rain Village was usually where villagers gathered to hear the will of "God," conveyed by the "Angel."
At the unguarded gate at the base of the tower, the dazed Ryushui entered silently, stepping into the vast, empty hall.
As soon as he entered, countless pieces of paper fluttered through the air, converging on him. One by one, they adhered to his body, wrapping him tightly despite his struggles.
"Ugh—"
The papers continued to close in, condensing into a strikingly beautiful woman with light blue hair. The paper formed a spear in her hand, which she aimed unflinchingly at Ryushui's heart.
"Fire Style: Fire Bomb!"
A blazing fireball suddenly shot out from the shadows behind Ryushui, targeting the paper-wielding woman. The fiery explosion forced her into the corner of the room, igniting the paper around her and consuming her form.
From the shadows, Jiraiya emerged, inflating his previously shrunken body with a deep breath. "It really is you, Konan," he said, staring through the smoke of the explosion. "When I heard about an origami Angel, I had a feeling it was you. You've grown into a fine woman, and your ninjutsu has improved remarkably."
The smoke cleared, revealing Konan standing unharmed, her calm demeanor unshaken.
"'Toad Flat Shadow Manipulation Technique'... I'm not surprised," Konan said.
"I wanted to surprise Payne, but it seems I found you first," Jiraiya admitted. "If you're here, then Payne must be Nagato."
"You're the Angel?!" Ryushui, having regained some composure, yelled at Konan. "This man infiltrated the Hidden Rain Village! Please punish him!"
"Step aside," Konan said calmly, her gaze fixed solely on Jiraiya.
"Yes!" Without hesitation, Ryushui turned and fled, leaving the hall.
Jiraiya sighed as the ninja disappeared. "You were always kind and gentle. How did you end up as a member of Akatsuki?"
"What do you even understand, Master Jiraiya?" Konan replied coldly. "You can't comprehend our thoughts, and none of this concerns you."
With that, Konan lifted into the air, pieces of paper forming massive wings behind her.
"Are you behind dragging the ninja world into war? Is this your idea of destroying everything? Answer me—where is Nagato?" Jiraiya demanded.
"I already said—this has nothing to do with you."
The paper wings fragmented into countless razor-sharp blades, flying toward Jiraiya like a deadly storm.
Jiraiya quickly formed a seal and countered. "Fire Style: Fire Bomb!"
The fireball intercepted the paper blades, but unlike before, Konan's paper suppressed the flames, scattering them.
Startled, Jiraiya stopped his attack and leaped out of harm's way.
The sharp paper pierced the ground where Jiraiya had stood moments earlier. Seizing the opportunity, Jiraiya spat a viscous stream of oil at Konan. "Toad Oil Bomb!"
Caught off guard, Konan was drenched in the sticky oil, rendering her paper techniques useless.
"Wild Lion's Mane Jutsu!"
Jiraiya's hair extended and wrapped around Konan, immobilizing her.
"Now you can't escape, Konan," Jiraiya said firmly. "Tell me, where is Nagato? Why have you become like this?
"I heard you had achieved great things after I left you, and then I was told you'd died in the war. But after investigating Akatsuki, I discovered you were alive—and a part of an organization bringing calamity to the ninja world. It's a crushing disappointment."
"You don't understand what we've been through," Konan said evenly. "I'm sure you regret not listening to Orochimaru back then."
Her words pulled Jiraiya into a painful memory. When he first encountered Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan, Orochimaru had suggested killing them to avoid future complications. Jiraiya had rejected the idea and taken them under his wing.
"You've always been my apprentices," Jiraiya said, shaking his head. "I never imagined the three of you, once advocates of peace, would become Akatsuki, bringing war and destruction. Have you forgotten your ideals?"
"This is the path we chose, Master Jiraiya," Konan replied.
A cold voice interrupted them from above. "This is the will of God."
On a nearby platform stood a figure with orange hair, a ponytail, and a pair of Rinnegan glowing in the dim light.
"Those eyes..." Jiraiya said, recognition dawning. "Though your appearance has changed, there's no mistaking those eyes. Nagato... so Yahiko is truly dead?"
"That's correct," Payne replied. "Yahiko is gone. Only 'Payne' remains."
"What do you mean by that, Nagato?" Jiraiya demanded.
"Summoning Jutsu!"
Behind Payne, a massive summoning circle appeared on the wall. From it emerged a giant, crab-like creature that immediately released torrents of foam, washing away the oil on Konan and forcing Jiraiya to release his hold.
Konan, freed, ascended into the air once more, her paper wings reforming. She took her place beside Payne.
"There should be two of you, Master Jiraiya," Payne said, his Rinnegan scanning the hall. "There's no use hiding. Before the eyes of God, no disguise can remain concealed."
With a thunderous roar, the summoned crab struck a seemingly empty corner of the room, its massive pincers smashing down.
"I just wanted to observe," came a calm voice.
From the shadows, Kirito emerged, effortlessly catching the crab's attack with his palm. A surge of icy energy spread from his hand, freezing the crab solid in an instant. The frost crept across the floor, turning the foam into a frozen sheet.
With a swift motion, Kirito shattered the frozen crab into shards. He stepped forward, his breath visible in the icy mist.
Jiraiya leaped down from the wall and approached Kirito. "As expected of Tsunade's disciple. But remember, as agreed, I'll handle my apprentice myself."
"No problem," Kirito replied. "As long as he doesn't target me, I won't interfere."
Watching his shattered summon, Payne narrowed his eyes. "The Konoha ninja with Ice Release... Tsunade's disciple... You must be the 'white-eyed boy' Kisame mentioned. But it seems you're using some form of disguise."
Assessing Kirito's strength, Payne realized he might need to summon the full power of the "Six Paths of Pain." However, he hesitated to reveal his trump card unless absolutely necessary.
"Konan," Payne commanded, "hold Kirito. Once I've dealt with Master Jiraiya, I'll assist you."
"Leave it to me," Konan replied.
Unfurling her paper wings, she faced the two figures standing resolutely on the icy battlefield.
