Naruto: The Tale of an Otsutsuki

Chapter 156: Chapter 156: Akatsuki's Past

With letters intercepted from the young woman at the nightclub, Jiraiya quickly tracked down two Hidden Rain Village ninjas who were slacking off. He successfully captured the careless pair using the "Toad Hotel" technique.

Once the two were secured, Jiraiya began his unconventional interrogation—a relentless feather tickling.

"Ha ha ha ha—"

"Hurry up and tell me about Payne and the 'Angel,' or you'll become the first ninja in history to die laughing!" Jiraiya teased, mercilessly circling the younger Hidden Rain ninja, Yudachi, with a feather until tears and snot streamed down his face from laughter.

"Stay strong!" shouted the other captured ninja, Ryushui. "We won't betray our comrades, no matter what!"

"Hahaha…yes, we…won't betray our comrades…hahaha—" Yudachi managed to stammer through uncontrollable laughter.

As expected, this childish method yielded no useful information. Frustrated, Jiraiya finally resorted to the "Frog Transformation Technique."

Seeing his comrade Yudachi turned into a frog, Ryushui panicked. Overwhelmed with fear, he spilled everything he knew.

He revealed that the civil war in the Hidden Rain Village had ended long ago. Payne had killed Hanzo the Salamander and wiped out everyone associated with him. He described Payne as a god-like figure, ruthless and invincible.

[So much for dying before betrayal...looks like the "Dead Taoist Friend is better than the Poor Taoist" philosophy applies here too.]

Standing nearby, Kirito quietly observed Jiraiya's antics, inwardly mocking the gullible Ryushui, who was probably cursing his companion-turned-frog at this very moment.

Despite obtaining plenty of information about the political situation in the village, Jiraiya was disappointed that details about Payne and the Angel were sparse. Aside from learning that the Angel was a master of paper techniques, there was little to go on.

"They're being incredibly cautious..." Jiraiya thought aloud. "But if the Angel uses paper, it has to be Konan."

Memories of Konan's fondness for origami as a child surfaced in his mind. Jiraiya had even taught her ninjutsu that incorporated paper techniques.

"If the Rinnegan is Nagato's and the paper Angel is Konan, where does that leave Yahiko? What role does he play in all this?"

Driven by curiosity, Jiraiya turned back to Ryushui. "Do you know anything about the Akatsuki organization? Tell me everything you know about them."

Ryushui's demeanor changed instantly. The once-cooperative ninja stiffened, his tone defiant. "Don't underestimate me! Even a small person has convictions. I won't share anything with outsiders who don't understand!"

Jiraiya was taken aback by the sudden shift. Akatsuki's position in the Hidden Rain Village was clearly significant.

"Why? Is Akatsuki a taboo topic in the Hidden Rain Village?"

Despite Jiraiya's threats, Ryushui refused to divulge more, forcing Jiraiya to analyze what little information he had.

At that moment, Kirito stepped forward. "Need some help?"

"I'll leave it to you. I'm not cut out for torture after all," Jiraiya admitted, stepping aside.

"No matter what you do, I won't talk," Ryushui said firmly, though his apprehension was clear.

Kirito calmly placed a hand on Ryushui's forehead. Almost instantly, the ninja's resistance melted away, replaced by a dull, vacant expression.

"Have you mastered the secret technique of the Yamanaka clan?" Jiraiya asked in surprise.

"No, this is just my approach to using genjutsu," Kirito replied before addressing Ryushui. "Tell me everything you know about Akatsuki."

Ryushui began speaking slowly:

"'Akatsuki' used to be our hope, but it was brutally wiped out by Hanzo..."

Ryushui explained that he had once admired Akatsuki's ideals of achieving peace through dialogue. Though unqualified to join as a full member, he had followed the group's efforts closely.

Akatsuki's message resonated deeply with the war-weary people of the Land of Rain, leading to the group's rapid growth in strength and influence.

However, their success attracted the attention of Hanzo the Salamander, the then-leader of the Hidden Rain Village.

At first, Hanzo dismissed Akatsuki as an idealistic youth movement destined to fail. But as Akatsuki's power grew, their philosophy began to conflict with Hanzo's warlike tendencies. Fearing that Akatsuki could threaten his authority, Hanzo plotted their destruction.

Under the guise of peace talks, Hanzo lured Akatsuki into a trap, using hostages and ambush tactics to eliminate the group.

"I heard that Hanzo fought fiercely with Akatsuki's leader. In the end, Hanzo emerged victorious, and Akatsuki's leader perished. But Hanzo also lost all his subordinates in the battle—no one survived," Ryushui recounted with visible sadness, despite his dull state.

Hearing this, Jiraiya's mind turned to Yahiko, whose ideals of peace had once shone so brightly. "What happened to Akatsuki after that?" he asked.

"After losing its leader, Akatsuki slowly disappeared. The hope for peace vanished, and the Hidden Rain fell into chaos and division once again—until the rise of Lord Payne and Lord Angel..."

Having said all he could, Ryushui fell silent.

"So that's how it was..." Jiraiya muttered. "Yahiko died in battle, but Nagato and Konan survived. Did their loss transform them into what they are now?"

Though he now knew more about the tragedy that befell Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan, Jiraiya felt the gaps in his understanding widening. He could only guess at the suffering and struggles that led them to this point.

But he quickly refocused.

No matter their past, the present Akatsuki organization had become a dangerous force threatening the entire ninja world. It was his responsibility to stop them.

"If you don't know what happened, then we'll just have to find out ourselves," Jiraiya said with determination.
