Chapter 443: Chapter 443: Look at My Face, Do I Still Need to Bother Looking for It?
By the time Uchiha Mikoto started her duties as the Kage's assistant, it was clear that her new responsibilities meant she wouldn't have the luxury of skipping work. Ironically, one of her tasks might even include keeping Tsunade from skipping work herself. With Tsunade's well-known tendencies for drinking, eating, and openly napping during work hours, Mikoto had her work cut out for her.
Meanwhile, Kushina breezed into the police department, effortlessly convincing them to let Mikoto join her for an outing. Used to Kushina's antics, the department promptly dispatched two teams to locate Namikaze Minato and Nawaki.
Minato was found diligently training, while Nawaki, to everyone's surprise, was discovered dining with a girl. The police officers, eager to share the juicy tidbit, reported the incident with exaggerated enthusiasm.
Back at home, Shinki reclined lazily on the sofa when the news reached him. His expression was one of amused boredom.
"So, Nawaki, you've been seen dining with a girl?" Shinki teased, glancing at the flustered young man.
"Has Nawaki found himself a girlfriend?" Minato added, his tone a mix of curiosity and mock betrayal. "We were supposed to stay single and grow stronger together, remember? You're breaking the pact!"
"No, no, no!" Nawaki's face turned a deep shade of red as he waved his hands frantically. "It's not like that! I helped Mia's team during my last mission, and she invited me to dinner to thank me. That's all! There's nothing else to it!"
"Mia?" Shinki raised an eyebrow, his tone skeptical. "Are you sure about that?"
"Yes, I'm sure!" Nawaki blurted, his voice an octave higher. "It was just a meal—nothing romantic, nothing more!"
Shinki shrugged, feigning disappointment. "Hmph, here I thought you'd finally found a girlfriend. Turns out, it was nothing."
Minato, however, wasn't ready to let it go. "So, Nawaki," he began slyly, "you're not planning to develop this into something more? Is she not your type, or is there something else?"
Nawaki's face turned even redder. "Stop it! There's nothing to develop! It was just dinner!"
"Alright, Minato, give him a break," Shinki interjected with a grin. "But seriously, Minato, maybe you should step up. With all the girls who have a crush on you, it wouldn't be hard to bring a girlfriend home and make Nawaki jealous."
Minato scratched the back of his head awkwardly, his face now matching Nawaki's in color. "I-I don't have time for that! My focus is on training!"
Shinki laughed, shaking his head. "Well, if both of you keep this up, you're doomed to stay single."
The teasing continued until Shinki abruptly shifted gears. "Alright, enough joking around. You two need to prepare for the Jonin exam. Once you pass, you'll both start training in the Hokage's office. Each of you will spend a month there, taking turns."
"Why the Hokage's office?" Minato asked, his curiosity piqued.
"You'll understand later. Just trust me on this," Shinki replied. "Oh, and one more thing—don't ignore the idea of finding a girlfriend. Once you're busy with missions and responsibilities, you won't have the time."
Minato and Nawaki exchanged glances, the weight of Shinki's words sinking in. Was he serious? Would their lives truly become so hectic?
Later, the two young ninjas headed to Ichiraku Ramen for their usual meal. As they ate, Nawaki couldn't help but revisit Shinki's words.
"Do you think Shinki was serious?" Nawaki asked, stirring his ramen absentmindedly.
Minato nodded. "I think so. The teacher rarely jokes about important things."
"But…" Nawaki hesitated, his thoughts returning to Mia.
Minato smirked knowingly. "So, Nawaki, do you like her?"
The question caught Nawaki off guard, causing him to choke on his ramen. After a fit of coughing, he managed to stammer, "W-What are you talking about? It's nothing like that!"
Minato's grin widened. "You might want to figure that out quickly. If you don't act, someone else might, and then you'll have no one to blame but yourself."
Nawaki groaned, rubbing his temples in frustration. Why does it sound like he's right?
Meanwhile, Minato shrugged nonchalantly, his confident smile adding salt to the wound. "Well, look at my face. Do you really think I need to worry about finding someone?"
"..."
Nawaki glared at Minato, muttering under his breath. "You're the worst."
Minato chuckled, basking in his small victory, while Nawaki wrestled with the realization that maybe, just maybe, he wasn't as indifferent to Mia as he had claimed.
