Chapter 183: Chapter 183: Plea for Dressrosa
"Alright, Sugar, change her back," Shin commanded, contemplating some ideas regarding Violet's ability to use the power of her devil fruit.
"Yes, Shin-sama." Sugar, already under the control of Kotoamatsukami, nodded. She stretched out her hand, and the small toy immediately transformed, revealing Violet in her original form.
As soon as Violet reappeared, she knelt before Shin, pleading, "Please, save Dressrosa."
Shin rolled his eyes. "And who exactly are you to ask me that?"
"Besides, does Dressrosa really need saving right now?"
At this, Violet quickly explained, "All those toys—they're people! Because of Sugar's power, thousands in Dressrosa have been turned into toys!"
"I'm begging you, show some mercy and let Sugar restore them!" she implored.
"It's easy enough to let them go, but have you considered the consequences?" Shin's gaze turned sharp as he looked at Violet.
"Let me be clear. I'm not giving up the remaining members of the Donquixote family. Their underground connections are useful to me."
"What do you think will happen once Dressrosa's toys are restored? The dark side of this kingdom will be completely exposed. Are the people here ready to confront the Donquixote family directly?"
"And even if I don't intervene, what do you think will happen if they try to fight them?"
The likely result? Absolute devastation. Take Pica, for instance, with his stone-stone fruit—he could level the entire city of Dressrosa without breaking a sweat.
With his golem form, Pica could crush most of Dressrosa's soldiers in mere moments.
In the New World, power gaps are monumental. Ordinary people don't even qualify as cannon fodder. Kaido's famous acquisition of artificial devil fruits and experimental giants only underscores the brutality of this world. The New World is far more ruthless than any other sea.
Despair filled Violet's face as she slumped to the ground, realizing the futility of her hopes.
In truth, Violet likely understood this all along. Even while part of the Doflamingo family, she could have secretly knocked Sugar out. But what would that accomplish? Doflamingo would simply retaliate, punishing Dressrosa, turning even more people into toys, and erasing even more memories.
This time, she turned to Shin, hoping he might show some mercy. Yet for Shin, any kindness he might show couldn't outweigh the strategic advantages offered by the Donquixote family.
"Don't look so defeated. I have other ways. As long as the conditions are right, it won't be difficult for Sugar to restore these toys to their original state."
"What's your plan?" Violet looked at him, her face lighting up with hope.
Shin smiled slightly. "A problem caused by a devil fruit should be solved with another devil fruit. I recall that the Big Mom Pirates have a user with the Memory-Memory Fruit. If we obtain that, we could erase these people's memories. They wouldn't recall a thing."
Shin could technically handle the memories himself, but the task would be a massive undertaking, likely involving tens of thousands of Dressrosa's residents. He didn't have the luxury of time for such a lengthy process.
"Memory-Memory fruit…" Disappointment crossed Violet's face. She recognized it wasn't a perfect solution, but she understood it was likely Shin's limit. In any case, Shin's approach was still far more humane than Doflamingo's methods.
Not all of Dressrosa's toys were local residents. Many were foreign pirates, spies, and even World Government marines.
Doflamingo was wise enough to avoid turning his own residents into toys—except during his initial confrontation with King Riku. Since then, he primarily targeted outsiders.
Truthfully, even if the average Dressrosa resident wanted to confront Doflamingo and his family, they wouldn't have the means to do so.
Shin was unwilling to allow all the toys to be restored, especially since some were spies or marines infiltrating Dressrosa.
"Now, about the favor I'm granting you… How do you plan to repay me?" Shin looked at Violet sharply, clearly interested in her devil fruit power.
Shin hadn't resorted to force since Violet wasn't his enemy or a threat. Otherwise, he'd have long since subjected her to another Kotoamatsukami.
Having served under Doflamingo for years, Violet felt no qualms about offering herself as a bargaining chip. She knew how valuable her devil fruit power was; after all, Doflamingo had spared her family out of respect for her ability.
"If you promise to meet a few of my conditions, I'll join your ranks, even as your lover if you wish."
"As my lover? No, I'd rather you remain as a subordinate." Shin waved his hands quickly. He had no desire to mirror Doflamingo's behavior and risk betrayal in his sleep.
Given the culture of Dressrosa, the women here were bold and independent—very different from those in Wano. While Shin was confident he wouldn't meet Doflamingo's fate, he had no wish to invite trouble unnecessarily.
Violet felt a bit crestfallen at Shin's response.
It wasn't that she had any romantic attachment to Shin, but she could see he was different from a ruthless leader like Doflamingo. He had a kinder demeanor and a softer heart. She thought that if she could get closer to him, maybe she could use her influence to ultimately save Dressrosa.
Violet quickly composed herself and voiced her conditions. "First, I hope you'll release my father."
Shin listened and nodded. King Riku was a classic example of a weak yet compassionate ruler—something all too common in the world of pirates.
Like the king of Alabasta or the ruler of the Ryugu Kingdom, King Riku exemplified a ruler who could do little beyond being kind-hearted. In this world of cutthroat pirates, or even in the real world, kings like him often ended up as puppets or pawns.
In a way, it was almost fortunate that the people of this world were generally straightforward and uncomplicated. Otherwise, leaders like Riku would have been easily overthrown by pirates or manipulated by their own ministers.
