Chapter 8: Oba, the Variable of Fate
The dense forest around Kayode grew eerily quiet as he followed Oba. The sleek black cat moved with an effortless grace, its golden eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. Kayode couldn't shake the feeling that there was something profoundly unusual about this creature not just in its origins but in its very existence.
"System," Kayode called out cautiously, "what exactly is Oba? He hatched from a dragon egg, but he's… not a dragon."
The African-Minded System hesitated, its usually confident voice unusually subdued. "Kayode, there are things even I cannot fully predict. Oba… he is what we call a Variable. Something that shouldn't exist but does—because of you."
Kayode blinked, startled. "What do you mean 'because of me'? I didn't do anything!"
Oba stopped in his tracks, his tail flicking as he turned to face Kayode. "That's where you're wrong, little human. Your mere existence bends the fabric of fate. You are no ordinary cultivator, and your destiny is no ordinary thread in the fate thread of this world."
Kayode crossed his arms, his skepticism rising. "You sound like one of those cryptic sages. Just tell me plainly."
Oba sighed dramatically, leaping onto a nearby rock to sit at eye level with Kayode. "Fine. Let me explain in terms your simple mind can grasp. This world runs on rules, like any cultivation system. Bloodlines, fates, destinie they're all predetermined, like a script. But sometimes, something or someone comes along and breaks the script. That's you."
Kayode frowned, glancing at the system interface hovering before him. "And how does this tie into it?"
The system's voice returned, now tinged with a mix of pride and unease. "Kayode, you are a chosen vessel, handpicked by me to ensure the Nigerian name thrives in this cultivation world, carrying the faith of the Yoruba lineage. Your presence has already disrupted the established order, creating ripples in fate. Oba is one of those ripples—an anomaly born from the chaos surrounding your existence."
Oba stretched lazily, his golden eyes narrowing. "In simpler terms, I exist because you're a walking headache for the universe."
Kayode scowled. "I feel like I'm being insulted here."
Oba ignored him, continuing. "I was supposed to be a dragon, a magnificent creature of fire and power. But your existence—and the system's meddling—rewrote the narrative. My essence was reshaped into something new, something beyond the understanding of this world's rules. I am both dragon and cat, predator and king, bound by nothing but my own whims."
Kayode's head spun as he tried to process this. "So you're saying… I broke the world's logic?"
The system chuckled. "Not just broke, Kayode. You've introduced a level of unpredictability that not even I can fully control. That's why Oba can sense me. He exists outside the constraints of the system, a being tied directly to your influence on fate."
Oba leapt back onto Kayode's shoulder, his claws kneading gently against the fabric of his shirt. "And that makes me special. Unlike you, tied to your system's whims, I am truly free. But don't worry, little human. I'll stick around... for now. Your chaotic life promises plenty of entertainment, and I do love a good meal."
Kayode shook his head in disbelief. "So, let me get this straight. I'm some kind of cosmic disruptor, and you're here because of me? What does that even mean for the future?"
The system's voice softened, a rare seriousness taking over. "It means your journey will be unlike any other, Kayode. The cultivation world will try to correct itself, to suppress your influence and restore balance. But you… you were born to defy balance. You were born to lead. Oba is proof of that."
Oba smirked, his golden eyes gleaming. "And as your self-appointed guide in this madness, I'll make sure you don't get yourself killed too quickly."
Kayode sighed, rubbing his temples. "Great. A lazy, greedy guide who only cares about treasure and food. I'm doomed."
Oba purred softly, an almost comforting sound. "Doomed? Hardly. You're destined for greatness, little human. Whether or not you survive it is up to you."
As they continued deeper into the forest, Kayode couldn't shake the weight of what he had just learned. His life was no longer just his own. He was a variable in the grand scheme of existence, a disruptor of fate from ninja.
And with Oba at his side, the chaos was only beginning.
