Chapter 337: Critical moment
Without caring about her worry, the bee beelined toward her. In a blink of an eye, it was already in front, aiming its stinger at her face.
Zoey felt her whole body frozen in fear at that moment. Her mind went blank and she even forgot what to do for a second. At that moment as well, a huge figure blocked her vision like a massive wall. It was the back of the female guard who had a man-like build.
"Candice!" Zoey shouted after snapping out from a shock.
"I won't let it touch even a single hair of yours! HAH!"
With a huge shout, Candice parried the bee using her flat paddle-like weapon, or maybe it was a crude sword. She swung it fiercely like hitting a home run. The bare force of her attack shocked the people around her. The bee was sent flying away. There was a gush of shockwave-like force generated around upon her action.
As expected of Candice, her strength was higher than most men in the department. This was the thought of everyone around her.
The bee turned into a sparkling dot in the sky in a matter of seconds. Who knows how far it was flown away? However, seeing its fate, there was no way it could come back any time soon.
Just when they could finally feel relieved, another buzzing sound reached everyone's ears.
"Don't drool around! Quick, intercept them!"
The guards who heard Candice's thunderous command heightened their vigilance instantly.
They saw two bees break through their defenses.
"Attack!"
Everyone shouted. Their spirit soared high upon witnessing Candice's power. Even though the bees were relentless, their collective effort hindered the bees' assault.
The bees flapped their transparent wings fiercely, avoiding all the guards' spears. The bees went to the back line as well like the first one. However, at the back line, an indomitable wall-like figure of Candice was blocking.
As the bees approached Candice readied her weapon. He didn't waste a single second and directly swung her crude flat sword to parry the bees.
HAH!
The air trembled and a whooshing sound could be heard overlapping with the buzzing sounds. Another bee was sent flying away, however, the other one managed to dodge her parry.
"Shit!"
Candice exclaimed as she followed her gaze to the bee. In just an instant, the bee was already in front of Zoey.
With wide eyes, Zoey felt her body and mind turn stiff. But if the bee managed to pass her, the townspeople behind her would be in great danger! The thought worries her. She was the final line of defense. She couldn't allow it!
It seemed something from within her had awakened. Her body exuded a brilliant aura, but it wasn't magical energy. That brilliant aura crawled to the sword and enveloped it. It even looked like the sword was absorbing it.
She quickly bit her lip to regain her bearing. Thanks to that, at least she managed to snap from getting intimidated. Strengthening her grip on her weapon, Zoey summoned her strength in both hands.
At this moment, she forgot that she was holding the wooden sword. Using one of the sword techniques she learned from repeated practice, she brandished her weapon. The sword drew a beautiful blue arc in the air.
"Heyah!" She shouted.
Candice widened her eyes in surprise as she looked behind her. There, she saw the bee sliced in half. All she could say was to murmur the word "beautiful" at that moment.
Hah~ hah~
Zoey let out some heavy breaths. At that moment, she was still unaware of what she had done. It seemed her body moved on its own at that moment. All she was thinking in that instant was to protect the people behind her, and then her hands moved.
On the ground, she saw the carcass of the. Weirdly, it split in… half?!
"Wow! Lady Zoey! You did it!"
One of the female guards shouted excitedly. Zoey blinked her eyes several times before she reacted.
"Ehhh!?"
She looked at the sword and noticed it was a wooden sword. But this time there was a faint glow on it. However, no matter how she looked at it, it was definitely the wooden sword that Eman handed to her just a while ago.
Zoey was overwhelmed by shock as she looked at it. Eman was right. This sword was truly unordinary!
Before she could celebrate for successfully getting rid of one of the bees, a cry was heard by them.
"Gyah!"
One of the guards fell to the ground with a loud thud. A bee tackled him. It could be seen that the defensive lines of the guards at the front line were slowly falling apart one by one. The bees continued to cause chaos towards the other guards.
The guards struggled to hit them. Moreover, even if they hit them, their attacks cause no damage.
"I won't let you, pesky insects!" Candice, with her crude flat sword, summoned her brute force to parry the approaching bees.
Two were hit by her but the others managed to get past her. Unluckily, a stinger embedded on her left shoulder.
"Ugh!"
Candice grimaced. She fell on her knee. Her face turned pale all of a sudden.
"Candice!"
Zoey shouted. Great worry was apparent in her voice.
"I'm fine, don't mind me." Using her crude flat sword, she helped herself to stand back again. Despite the searing pain, Candice still didn't want to give up. She took out the stinger that was left embedded on her shoulder. It was as big as an adult's index finger. She threw it away after taking it off.
Her vision slowly turned blurry and darkening, but she couldn't give up. She wanted to fight till the very end of her life.
Zoey wanted to check Candice's status, but she had to get rid of the approaching enemies first.
The wooden sword in her hand started emitting a brilliant glow again. While on it, Zoey felt her body slowly turning numb.
What is this feeling? She thought.
Her hand moved and the wooden sword drew beautiful arcs in the air. The bees were severed one after another. She continued without stopping until only one bee remained. However, at that moment, Zoey felt her body lose strength. She felt very exhausted. She stumbled forward.
"Lady Zoey!"
A loud yell took everyone's attention. They saw the bee approaching Zoey. Everyone widened their eyes at that moment. Even if they tried to rush to her aid, they would arrive late. Despite that, some of them still tried to aid her. But the bee was already a couple of inches away from stabbing its stinger into Zoey's eye.
Zoey couldn't even do anything to dodge it. Her body wouldn't listen to her anymore. It continued falling down.
Damn! And it was a critical moment!
Suddenly, there was a gush of wind. A shadow appeared and caught Zoey before she fell. On the other hand, the bee had already been cut to pieces and its remains fell to the ground.
"Eman…"
A whisper was the last bit of her strength.
Eman smiled and said, "Good job…"
Zoey then lost consciousness after that.
