Chapter 9
After Lu Yuan left, Fu Langming sneaked back into his office and dialled a number on his phone.
In a modest room next to Lu Yuan’s, equipped only with a bed and a desk, Li Qinghe sat cross-legged on her bed, deep in meditation. Suddenly, she frowned slightly, flipped her right hand, and a jet-black cube fell into it. Tapping on the cube, a holographic screen popped up showing a message from Fu Langming.
Li Qinghe answered the call with a frosty voice, “You have five seconds to explain.”
Fu Langming, sweating profusely, realized his mistake.
‘Damn! I forgot the boss hates being disturbed during her meditation!’
He quickly spoke, “Boss, it’s about Lu Yuan!”
“Lu Yuan?” Li Qinghe raised an eyebrow. “What’s happened to him? What did I tell you?”
“No, no, Boss, nothing’s happened to him, it’s just that his talent is incredible! Exceptionally strong!”
“Hmm? Explain.”
Fu Langming gathered his thoughts, then said, “Didn’t you say he just awakened the day before yesterday? But he’s already begun to refine his gene chain through spiritual power. Today, wasn’t I supposed to teach him body techniques? His strength almost matches one of my top fighters. I suspect he’s already undergone significant refinement. I asked him, and he said he absorbed Spiritual Qi in just half a day.”
Li Qinghe, startled, a flicker of surprise crossed her eyes. “Half a day to absorb Spiritual Qi?! Are you sure?”
“I believe he wasn’t exaggerating. After all, his strength is much greater than that of ordinary people.”
Li Qinghe frowned slightly, falling silent before speaking again, “I see. So why did you call me? What do you want to say?”
“Cough… Boss, given your sharp insight… I was thinking of recruiting him into my team.”
“Get lost!” Li Qinghe’s response was icy as she abruptly ended the call.
On the other end, Fu Langming, still holding his phone to his ear, was baffled by the dial tone. He hadn’t quite grasped the situation.
In her room, Li Qinghe put away the communicator and laid back on her bed, her alluring curves unmistakable.
She squinted at the ceiling, a smile creeping onto her face, “Who would have thought that kid had such talent? Half a day? He’s almost caught up to me. Interesting. Am I just that lucky? Stumbling upon a pitiful little brother with such potential?”
Her gaze was thoughtful, pondering over unknown thoughts.
…
Back in his rented room, Lu Yuan noticed the stillness. Glancing at the firmly shut door of Li Qinghe’s room, he guessed she might have already left for work. Planning to thank Li Qinghe, he decided to treat her to a good meal once he had some money.
After a shower, the fatigue hit Lu Yuan hard. His body, growing firmer with each passing day, bore the purple marks from Xiao Hu’s beating. He probed a particularly dark bruise on his abdomen and winced, “Damn! That really hurt!”
Bearing the pain, he sat cross-legged and began channelling his Spiritual Qi.
Suddenly, from next door, bizarre noises began to echo. Lu Yuan’s expression changed as he nearly burst out laughing. “Already? They’re starting their exercises?”
The noise only grew louder, pushing Lu Yuan to open his eyes in annoyance and shout, “Pay the rent!”
Immediately, silence descended. Satisfied, Lu Yuan closed his eyes and resumed his cultivation.
…
Three days later, at the Great Ming Martial Arts Gym.
A circle of muscular men stood arms folded, with Lu Yuan and a bald muscular man at the centre, both clad in protective gear, wielding huge wooden swords. The clash of their swords produced dull thumping sounds.
Agile movements from both fighters ensued until Lu Yuan, with a flick of his wrist, drew an arc with his sword that landed on the hilt of the bald man’s sword. Swiftly closing the gap, he delivered a knee strike that knocked the muscular man to the ground.
“Wuhu! Brother Yuan wins again!” someone shouted.
“Iron Head used to be a mercenary with solid sword skills. It’s unbelievable that Brother Yuan defeated him in just two days!”
“Truly worthy of Brother Yuan! Awesome!”
Lu Yuan looked down at Iron Head on the ground, exhaling deeply while his hands, still gripping the sword, trembled slightly from the exertion.
After defeating Xiao Hu, Lu Yuan began challenging others to sword duels the very next day, eventually facing off against Iron Head, who had been a mercenary and even hunted beasts. In just two days, Lu Yuan had mastered the Military Style Killing Sword and defeated Iron Head.
“Are you okay?” Lu Yuan asked, looking at Iron Head.
Iron Head, clutching his belly, managed to stand up and shook his head with a grin. “I’ve seen quite a few Gene Warriors, but none who progressed as fast as you. I bet you’ll become someone important.”
Lu Yuan smiled wryly. “I think so too.”
Jokingly, he thought, ‘After all, I, Lu, have a golden finger with limitless potential.’
At that moment, Fu Langming approached. “Well done, significant progress. With your current ability, entering Land of Origin for the first time shouldn’t be a problem.”
Lu Yuan’s eyes lit up, smiling, “Thanks for your guidance these past few days, Brother Ming. Without it, I wouldn’t have improved so much so quickly.”
He felt confident enough now to venture into the Land of Origin. A crucial first expedition could set the pace for future ones, and gaining something from it would be ideal.
Fu Langming nodded, then said, “Come with me.”
Lu Yuan followed Fu Langming to his office. Fu Langming gestured towards a sofa. “Sit.”
As Lu Yuan sat, Fu Langming began, “Entering the Land of Origin means you’ll obtain your first extraordinary gene. This will define your path forward. Do you understand the types of Gene Warriors?”
Lu Yuan nodded, “I’ve read about it on BattleNet. There’s the Guardian type focusing on defence, the Assault type on power and attack, and the Assassin type on stealth and killing…”
Fu Langming nodded slowly and continued, “Since you’re aware, you should also know that once you imprint an extraordinary gene, your body will lean towards that gene’s attributes. While a Gene Warrior can enhance various abilities by imprinting different genes, studies show focusing on one path yields the greatest benefits. Have you decided which path to take?”
Though basic knowledge for any Gene Warrior, Lu Yuan knew this general truth didn’t apply to him. With his Evolution Cube, every extraordinary gene would significantly boost a particular trait—strength, durability, agility, etc.—while also enhancing others, albeit to a lesser extent. Most Gene Warriors would focus on one path to maximize benefits, but Lu Yuan’s cube allowed him to evolve all his genes to their most potent forms. Eventually, he could develop in all directions—strongest defences, greatest strength, quickest speeds, and toughest mental capacities.
Still, at this current stage, he needed to choose an apparent path to show to the outside world. Having pondered this before, he planned to pursue the path of an Assault Warrior.
For Lu Yuan, any direction would work just the same.
With the Evolution Cube, he could excel in any field he chose.
The choice to display himself as an Assault type was more about versatility; it allowed for greater adaptability in various future scenarios.
Hearing Lu Yuan’s decision, Fu Langming paused for a moment before breaking into a smile:
“Assault type? That’s great! I’m all about Assault types myself!”
Lu Yuan gave him a look, internally speechless.
This guy had just barely made it to Rank 1 Warrior Level, and with only one gene recorded, calling himself Assault type was a bit of a stretch.
