My Gene Evolves Infinitely

Chapter 8

“You, come with me.”

He led them to a ring where two robust men were sparring intensely, their bodies and faces marked with bruises.

Below the ring, a crowd was watching, cheering and jeering.

“Old Cat! Are you even trying? Straight punch! Right hook! Damn it, hit him!”

“Mountain Pig! Put some power into it! Have you even eaten today? Hit him! Hit that weakling!”

The spectators made way as they saw Fu Langming approach, some casting curious glances at the trio, especially at Lu Yuan’s unfamiliar face.

Fu Langming slapped the ring floor, which resonated with a bang.

“Stop!”

His command carried weight here, and the two fighters in the ring paused their fierce exchange and stepped apart.

They wiped the blood from their faces, panting heavily and shooting each other menacing looks before turning to Fu Langming.

“Brother Ming.”

Fu Langming gestured with a hand and grinned,

“Step down, let’s switch it up!”

“Switch?”

Not only the fighters, Old Cat and Mountain Pig, but also the crowd was taken aback.

Then someone in the crowd eagerly asked, “Is Brother Ming going to show us how it’s done?”

“Is Xiao Hu just a punching bag? Brilliant!”

“Let the show start! Brother Ming is badass!”

Hearing this, Xiao Hu, still smiling naively, scratched his head,

“Guys, you might be disappointed. Brother Ming isn’t fighting; I’ll be sparring with this newbie.”

He pointed at Lu Yuan. The crowd surveyed Lu Yuan and immediately showed disappointment.

“Him? He’s skinnier than my arm. One punch and he’s down for the count, right?”

“A new face? Why isn’t this pretty boy picking up clients at the Golden Shine Club instead of coming here?”

“Hey, pretty boy! You’re not going to pee your pants when you get up there, are you?!”

Laughter erupted among the onlookers.

Brother Ming, arms crossed, joined in the laughter.

He teased Lu Yuan, “What do you say, kid? You up for it?”

Lu Yuan raised an eyebrow, glanced at them, and silently rolled up his sleeves.

“Let’s give it a try.”

Xiao Hu chuckled, scratching his head, “Just so you know, I’m not paying for your hospital bills if you get laid out.”

Lu Yuan smirked, “No need for that.”

“Alright then, get on the ring,” Brother Ming announced.

Amid the jeers and whistles from the crowd, Lu Yuan and Xiao Hu climbed onto the ring.

In the ring, Lu Yuan and Xiao Hu faced each other.

Below, Fu Langming slapped the edge of the ring:

“Begin!”

The two competitors locked eyes. Xiao Hu scratched his head and chuckled,

“You go first.”

The crowd below was raucous.

“Come on, pretty boy, quick! This is your only chance!”

“Yeah, give Xiao Hu a punch! Show us you’re at least not a complete wimp!”

Lu Yuan smirked and, using Military Style Boxing techniques, took a step forward. His body, enhanced by his gene chain, surged forward with astonishing speed towards Xiao Hu.

He twisted his waist, swung his arm, and launched a punch directly at Xiao Hu’s chest.

The punch whistled through the air.

Xiao Hu, feeling the rush of the punch, momentarily froze his naive smile. He pushed his hands down in defence right in front of Lu Yuan’s fist.

Bang!

Xiao Hu’s hands were forced back onto his chest by the impact, his face twisted in shock as his body staggered back, nearly falling out of the ring.

The intense pain turned Xiao Hu’s face pale.

He looked up at Lu Yuan, stunned, unable to speak.

The mocking jeers from the crowd below ceased as everyone watched Lu Yuan rotate his wrist and Xiao Hu clutching his chest in pain.

“Is… is the bean sprout really that strong?”

“Can’t be! How does this pretty boy have such speed? That punch… it’s something else.”

At that moment, Fu Langming grinned and said, “Xiao Hu, forgot to mention—this kid’s a Gene Warrior. If you don’t wanna end up bedridden, better start showing some real skills.”

Xiao Hu, bewildered and a bit tearful, looked at the grinning Fu Langming, “A Gene Warrior?! Why didn’t you say so earlier, Brother Ming?!”

The others also looked surprised, their view of Lu Yuan shifting.

“So he’s a Gene Warrior… that explains it.”

“If he’s a Gene Warrior, that kind of strength makes sense.”

Considering the rarity of Gene Warriors, especially in such impoverished areas, seeing one was as rare as spotting a giant panda. The onlookers eyed Lu Yuan with curiosity.

Lu Yuan, watching Xiao Hu rub his chest and grimace, chuckled, “Don’t worry, if I knock you down, I won’t be paying for your medical bills.”

Xiao Hu grimaced.

“Underestimated you, sprout. But you’re probably not that tough for a Gene Warrior, right? Your strength isn’t much better than mine.”

He lunged at Lu Yuan.

“Let’s see how you handle a skill gap!”

Fists, feet, elbows, knees—every part of Xiao Hu seemed to turn into a weapon as he unleashed a barrage of attacks on Lu Yuan.

Having only learned Military Style Boxing the day before and with virtually no real fighting experience, Lu Yuan was initially overwhelmed by the onslaught.

He was on the defensive, his pupils dilating as he struggled to block the relentless attacks. But his newly enhanced strength and possibly superior mental agility allowed him to perceive Xiao Hu’s movements, managing to hold his own despite the occasional hits.

The dull thuds of their striking blows resonated around them, drawing the crowd’s attention to the fierce battle.

After a few moments, Lu Yuan suddenly sidestepped to dodge an elbow strike from Xiao Hu, then counterattacked with a knee to Xiao Hu’s side.

Xiao Hu’s face turned white as he staggered back several steps.

The onlookers’ eyes widened in surprise.

“Can he actually counterattack?!”

“Yeah, this kid’s strength and speed are almost on par with Xiao Hu, but there’s a huge gap in skill and experience. He was being dominated by Xiao Hu just now, and look, he’s already countering?”

“Is this what a Gene Warrior is like? So freakishly strong!”

As the fight progressed, the onlookers’ perception of Lu Yuan shifted from earlier calling him effeminate and a ‘bean sprout.’ Lu Yuan’s display of strength earned him respect among many.

Fu Langming kept a close eye on Lu Yuan and was visibly shocked after Lu Yuan’s first successful counterattack.

Grinning, he muttered to himself, ‘What terrifying learning and adaptive abilities! This must be that natural combat instinct, combined with monstrous talent. What kind of beast did Qinghe bring to us?! He could rival the direct descendants of the great imperial families! A beast from the slums? You must be kidding!’

As the battle waged on, Lu Yuan’s responses grew stronger and more confident. Initially outmatched by Xiao Hu’s experience and skills, Lu Yuan gradually got a hang of Military Style Boxing and started to dodge and counter effectively. It was a tremendous improvement to go from being heavily pressured to being able to strike back.

However, after a long fight, both Lu Yuan and Xiao Hu were nearly drained. Breathing heavily, their moves sloppy and their punches lacking force, Fu Langming decided it was time to call a halt.

“Alright, stop!” he announced.

Xiao Hu stopped immediately, but Lu Yuan’s punch, already in motion, landed squarely on Xiao Hu’s face.

Holding his visibly swollen face, Xiao Hu exclaimed, “I thought we were stopping?!”

Lu Yuan, rubbing his bruised mouth, winced and replied innocently, “I couldn’t pull back in time.”

Xiao Hu, eyes wide and mouth agape in disbelief, didn’t know how to respond. Fu Langming crossed his arms and said, “Take a break. We’ll continue training later.”

Xiao Hu grimaced, “Brother Ming, do I really have to keep sparring with him?”

“What’s wrong?”

Xiao Hu glanced at Lu Yuan, scratching his head in frustration, “If we keep going, I might end up being the one getting beaten.”

It was true. Lu Yuan’s performance was astonishingly good for someone so new to combat. Give him another afternoon, and Xiao Hu wasn’t sure he could hold his own.

In Xiao Hu’s eyes, Lu Yuan was something of a monster.

“Don’t worry, I won’t cover your medical bills,” Lu Yuan joked.

“How is that supposed to make me feel better?!” Xiao Hu complained.

“Don’t worry, I’ll cover the medical expenses if needed,” Fu Langming reassured, patting Xiao Hu on the shoulder.

Xiao Hu, still a bit dazed, managed a weak smile, “Thanks, I guess.”

After a break, Lu Yuan and Xiao Hu rested. Lu Yuan used this time to regenerate his physical energy with Spiritual Qi, reflecting on the fight’s lessons and eager to improve further.

Fu Langming was right; actual combat significantly enhances one’s martial skills, far more than solitary practice. Lu Yuan felt it wouldn’t be long before he mastered Military Style Boxing completely, and then he could move on to Military Style Killing Sword.

After that, it would be time to venture into the Land of Origin, find the right genes, inscribe them, evolve, and fully embark on his path.

In the afternoon, the crowd around the arena grew as Lu Yuan and Xiao Hu resumed their sparring.

Onlookers whispered among themselves, “Is it for real? Can that bean sprout actually hold his ground against Xiao Hu?”

“No more calling him ‘bean sprout!’ It’s Brother Yuan now—our Gene Warrior with a bright future!”

“Never mind the future; Brother Yuan is already proving his mettle. Remember this morning? Xiao Hu was initially dominating, but it didn’t take long for Brother Yuan to start fighting back. With that learning ability, who can compare?”

“Truly worthy of a Gene Warrior, Brother Yuan is awesome. If Brother Yuan ever decides to lead, I wonder if we could follow him.”

“You’re dreaming, right? A formidable Gene Warrior like Brother Yuan will be battling monsters and competing with warriors from other races, not hanging around with us.”

Everyone agreed, finding the idea reasonable. The fight commenced again. This time, it wasn’t like before; Xiao Hu could no longer dominate Lu Yuan as easily.

During the fight, Xiao Hu could feel that Lu Yuan’s weaknesses were diminishing and the pressure on him was increasing. Soon, sweat appeared on Xiao Hu’s forehead. In the morning, Xiao Hu would attack four times before Lu Yuan could counter once. Gradually, it shifted to three, then two.

Eventually, the spectators noticed that Lu Yuan was exchanging blows equally with Xiao Hu, not just defending and counterattacking. As time passed, to everyone’s disbelief, Lu Yuan began to dominate the fight.

Bang!

It wasn’t long before Lu Yuan’s continuous punches, elbow strikes, and knee hits overwhelmed Xiao Hu, forcing him to retreat repeatedly until Lu Yuan seized an opportunity and landed a punch in his stomach.

Xiao Hu turned pale, clutching his stomach and collapsing to the ground, emitting a low groan. The atmosphere fell silent; the air was still, and the onlookers exchanged glances.

“He won…”

“Brother Yuan is incredible! In just less than a day, he’s already defeated Xiao Hu?!”

“Worthily my Brother Yuan! So strong!”

The crowd erupted into cheers. Xiao Hu, lying on the ground, heard the cheers and was filled with question marks. He looked at the crowd below, his eyes filled with confusion.

Bewildered by his friends’ sudden turn, having spent so long together in the same dojo, he wondered, “Why have these jerks turned on me?!”

Fu Langming, with his arms crossed and a smile on his face, watched Lu Yuan.

“Kid, you fought well.”

Lying on the ground, Xiao Hu was stunned. “Why does no one want me?”

Lu Yuan smiled. “Brother Ming flatters me, I still have a long way to go.”

“Well, I think so too. You need to keep practising. When you can beat me, that will be something,” said Fu Langming, nodding his approval.

Lu Yuan was just being modest and didn’t expect Fu Langming to take it seriously.

He thought he was quite impressive, considering he had managed to master Military Style Boxing in just one day.

“Already late today, let’s stop here. Come back tomorrow, and I’ll teach you the sword,” Fu Langming added.

Lu Yuan’s eyes lit up, “Thank you, Brother Ming.”
