Chapter 15
Lu Yuan didn’t throw a stone for the fourth time; instead, he followed the stone wall and climbed down from the top of the cliff back to the ground. Then, about 100 meters away from the Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles in the narrowest part of the area, he stopped and pulled out a not-too-large plastic bucket from his backpack.
He opened the bucket and poured out a sticky transparent liquid. This was a new type of incendiary oil, colourless and odourless, which could burn continuously at extremely high temperatures for a significant duration.
Lu Yuan had bought this as a precautionary measure, not expecting to use it. He spread the burning oil across the path, making several trips back and forth to ensure that he could completely block the path with it.
After securing the path with the oil, Lu Yuan climbed back up to the top of the cliff. Once there, he took out a roll of green plastic bags. These bags were made from a sturdy, waterproof, and abrasion-resistant special nylon material, useful in many scenarios and listed as an essential item for rookies. Lu Yuan had bought a whole roll of twenty bags just in case and, unexpectedly, he found a use for them now.
He opened the bags and filled them with weathered sandstones, stuffing them until all twenty were full. After filling the bags, he tied four together with a rope, making five bundles in total. Having prepared his materials, Lu Yuan smiled; he was almost ready for the final step.
He checked his position and moved to the part of the cliff closest to the wooden treasure box. Pulling out his black light alloy sword, he stabbed it into the cliffside, leaving only the hilt exposed. Next, he attached a thick rope to the sword’s hilt and tested it to ensure it was securely tied. After spraying himself with an odour neutralizer to remove any scents that might give him away, he was finally ready.
“All set. Now, let’s see if I can turn a bike into a motorcycle,” Lu Yuan murmured, though he knew the plan wasn’t guaranteed to succeed.
But as it is often said, “Fortune favours the bold,” and with the treasure box in sight, he wasn’t about to walk away without trying.
With everything in place, Lu Yuan looked down at the two Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles. They seemed to be enjoying their meal, oblivious to the impending disruption. But they were about to be unhappy again.
Lu Yuan grinned as he walked back to where he’d thrown the stones before and picked up the four stones he had prepared earlier. He threw two stones in two different directions, causing a loud sound as they hit the ground.
Thud, thud, thud, thud! The sound of the stones disturbed the beetles’ meal, and they both screeched in annoyance. They hated being interrupted repeatedly.
Reacting quickly, both beetles charged out. Lu Yuan watched from above as they crossed the line marked by the incendiary oil and headed towards the source of the disturbance. Once they reached the stony area, Lu Yuan lit a torch and threw it onto the oil-soaked path.
Boom! The moment the torch touched the oil, a fiery explosion erupted, sending flames shooting up almost instantly to the top of the cliff. The intense heat was felt even where Lu Yuan stood, and the oxygen around him seemed to burn away, making it hard to breathe.
Nevertheless, Lu Yuan didn’t pause. Acting as he had rehearsed countless times in his mind, he grabbed a bundle of four plastic bags and threw it over the firewall. The heat caused the bags to burst immediately, scattering the sandstone and adding to the chaos of wind and flames.
Without stopping, he threw the second, then the third, and fourth bundles of bags, until all five were expended, filling the air with dust and debris. The fire zone became a blurred mess of melting sand and flying grit, forming an invisible barrier as planned.
Two Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles initially noticed something amiss and whirled around sharply, charging back towards the direction from which they came.
As they approached the fiery barrier, they halted. Even for creatures as formidable as they are, the intense heat was too much to cross unscathed.
Sensing the danger, the beetles hesitated. During their moment of uncertainty, some of the melting grit fell onto them, sizzling upon contact with their carapaces and causing them to emit puffs of smoke. Startled, the beetles retreated several steps and shrieked angrily at the wall of fire.
While they wavered, Lu Yuan made his move. He swiftly climbed down the cliff to where he’d set up the rope. Grabbing the rope, he descended with agility surpassing that of a Special Forces operative.
Under normal circumstances, the beetles would have noticed him by now, but the swirling sands above and the dimmed skies obscured their view, keeping Lu Yuan undetected as he sneaked into their lair to pilfer their treasures.
Lu Yuan’s descent was swift; he touched the ground within moments and sprinted straight for the wooden chest. It was unlocked, allowing him to open it immediately.
Inside, he discovered a white and a light green orb. The white one was entwined with strange lines while the green one resembled a large black sword. Without hesitation, he scooped both orbs into his Battle Mark Space.
With no time to lose, Lu Yuan grabbed the rope and ascended the cliff once more. Although climbing up was slower compared to his descent, it took him only about ten seconds to reach the top. Upon reaching the cliff’s edge, he hastily coiled up the rope, retrieved his black light alloy sword from where it was lodged in the rock and fled.
The burning oil, intended to last a while, was quickly depleting due to the limited supply he could carry and the relentless sand raining down, threatening to extinguish the flames soon. Lu Yuan knew he had to move fast; once the fire died down, if the beetles found him, his fate would be sealed.
Capitalizing on the ongoing sandstorm and the robust flames, Lu Yuan made a quick escape along the cliff. He didn’t stop until he was well away from the scene, finally collapsing atop the cliff, gasping for air as the winds continued to lash at him with sandy gusts.
Though the ordeal was brief, the exertion was immense. Not just physically draining, the tension had taxed his spirit significantly. However, the thrill of success and the sight of the two orbs in his Battle Mark Space brought a wild grin to his face. As a newly awakened Gene Warrior, to steal from under the guard of two Elite Level beasts was an audacious feat, akin to snatching food from a tiger’s mouth.
He had taken a great risk, but the reward was monumental—an ordinary rank Extraordinary Gene chain and an Elite Level Genetic Armament suitable for his use—a treasure indeed priceless!
Indeed, it was a moment that affirmed his potential to be a pillar of humanity.
