Chapter 16
Lu Yuan did not immediately inspect the two trophies he had acquired.
He took a brief rest, then continued moving across the desert, planning to find a sheltered spot to examine his spoils of war.
…
When Lu Yuan left, in another part of the Ash Stone Forest, a group of human Gene Warriors was taking a break near the corpses of about ten Ash Stone Beetles.
Suddenly, a tall, thin man exclaimed, “Look over there!”
At his words, the other three looked up.
Following the direction indicated by the tall, thin man, they saw flames soaring into the sky. Everyone’s eyes widened in shock and confusion.
“What’s going on over there? Why such a massive blaze?”
“Could it be some kind of treasure has appeared?”
“Maybe a rare and ferocious beast has been born!”
“Shall we go check it out?”
The tall, thin man turned to consult with his companions.
Then both he and the other two looked towards a robust man clad in black metal armour, leaning on a greatsword.
“Boss, what do you think?”
The robust man looked towards the distant flames, his eyes flickering. He pondered for a moment, then squinted and said, “Let’s go have a look! But be careful; we might not be the only ones in this region. With such a commotion, other creatures must have noticed it too. There could be others heading that way. Stay alert to avoid any ambushes.”
The others grinned.
“Don’t worry, Boss! We’ve been around the Land of Origin long enough to handle this.”
“Then let’s go!”
The robust man, leaning on his sword, stood up.
The other three also rose, excitement in their eyes.
The four of them moved towards the direction of the flames.
…
Before long, the air cleared as sand and grit settled, and the flames gradually died down.
With the fire subsiding, two Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles screeched manically, burst through the firewall, and then ran back to the wooden treasure box.
However, they quickly saw that the box had been opened and its contents vanished.
Squeak squeak squeak!!
Immediately, the two beetles screeched angrily, their claws scraping the ground as faint white ghostly lights flickered on their bodies.
They dashed off, searching frantically for whoever had taken the items.
Unfortunately, Lu Yuan had erased all traces, leaving no scent behind. The two beetles could not find him.
Meanwhile, the four human Gene Warriors gradually approached the area.
The robust man in metal armour, wielding his greatsword, led cautiously, with three men following behind.
As they passed through a passage, they abruptly stopped.
Not far away, three elves appeared: two males and one female.
Both parties eyed each other warily.
Before they could speak, three Gnolls emerged from another path.
The three groups met and assessed each other.
Then, a male elf holding a longbow spoke calmly:
“Presumably, we were all drawn here by that blaze. We still don’t know what’s out there. How about we explore the situation together first and then decide what to do?”
Upon hearing this, the humans exchanged looks.
A towering Gnoll with a thick coat of black fur chuckled, “Heh, I have no objections.”
The robust man’s expression was stern, “We agree.”
The three groups maintained a distance from each other and continued forward.
However, they had not gone far when two shadows dashed out from the distance.
After clearly seeing what they were dealing with, the complexions of all three groups changed instantly.
“Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles?!”
“Damn! There are two of them?!”
“Be careful!”
The two Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles also spotted the three groups of people nearby almost immediately.
Upon seeing the groups, the beetles’ eyes turned red with rage.
Their eyes seemed to say, ‘Damn thieves! Prepare to die!’
Their bodies flashed with white light as they were covered in stone-like armour, and they screamed madly as they charged toward the groups.
Battle skill activated – [Stone Skin]
The three groups were stunned, “What?!”
Watching the frenzied attack of the beetles, they were bewildered.
“They’re starting with a battle skill? What got into these beetles?!”
“These beetles have gone mad!”
“Ranged fighters, attack!”
Several archers simultaneously drew and released their arrows, but the arrows merely left white marks on the beetles’ stone armour before bouncing off.
The elven woman, having encoded the gene for it, conjured a human-head-sized fireball in her hand and hurled it at one of the beetles.
Boom!!
The firestorm raged, and the beetle emerged from the flames, its stone armour slightly charred but its ferocity undiminished.
Everyone’s expression turned grave.
“Hell! Such strong defence! Block them! Keep them from reaching our rear lines!”
The scene quickly descended into chaos.
…
Meanwhile, the instigator of this chaos, a strikingly handsome man destined to be a pillar of humanity, had found a sheltered spot on the desert crest and was cheerfully inspecting his loot.
He first extracted a light-green orb.
Inside the orb was a greatsword.
Lu Yuan grasped the orb firmly, and it shattered, dropping the greatsword to the ground.
The sword was jet black, about one and a half meters long, with two thicker regions on the blade resembling the joints of an Ash Stone Beetle.
As Lu Yuan placed his hand on the hilt, information about the greatsword flowed into his mind.
Lu Yuan wasn’t surprised; such is the magic of the Land of Origin, where certain trophies reveal their uses.
The mysteries of the Land of Origin are profound; the inner workings of many things remain unknown.
Not even whether the Land of Origin possesses a consciousness or not is known.
But such concerns were not for Lu Yuan to ponder at the moment.
After absorbing the information, a smile appeared on his face.
This greatsword, named Beetle Claw, was an elite-quality Genetic Armament.
Unlike ordinary weapons, Genetic Armaments are made from special materials that enhance the user’s abilities.
For instance, the moment Lu Yuan grasped the Beetle Claw, he felt his strength nearly double—an impressive boost.
This was admittedly because Lu Yuan’s strength was relatively weak, and the elite-quality armament was particularly powerful, hence the substantial increase.
Once Lu Yuan’s power grew, the benefits of the enhancement would diminish.
But for now, the Beetle Claw was akin to a divine artefact for him!
Moreover, when Lu Yuan thrust the Beetle Claw into the ground, it pierced the rock as easily as if it were tofu, a stark contrast to the black light alloy sword he previously used.
With this weapon, any other sword might as well be obsolete!
Lu Yuan, delighted, caressed the blade of the Beetle Claw, his mood elated.
With this weapon, killing Ash Stone Beetles would be a breeze, wouldn’t it?
His progression was bound to accelerate!
With a thought, the Beetle Claw transformed into a swirl of dark light and merged into Lu Yuan’s body, passing through a white mist and finally floating as a shadowy figure around his gene chain.
This effect of Genetic Armament, the enhancement, would persist as long as his physical body could withstand it.
If the added power was too great, it could overwhelm the physical body, leading to its collapse.
After all, the power provided by Genetic Armament is merely an external force.
For instance, Lu Yuan has only augmented himself with the Beetle Claw, and already he feels his body reaching a saturation point. If he were to augment with another Genetic Armament, his body probably couldn’t handle it.
Having examined the Genetic Armament, the real highlight was next.
Lu Yuan, with a hint of anticipation in his eyes, pulled out a white light orb.
Inside the orb, strange filaments weaved and flowed incessantly, seemingly following an arcane pattern.
An Extraordinary Gene, the core of what it meant to be a Gene Warrior.
The first Extraordinary Gene in Lu Yuan’s journey.
It would become the foundation of all his future exploits and victories.
