Chapter 14
Lu Yuan hid in a corner, watching two Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles in the distance, his gaze flickering.
Direct confrontation was hopeless; he would have to rely on his wits.
He surveyed the surrounding environment, considering his options.
Soon, Lu Yuan looked up at the dim yellow sky, then at the desert above, and again at his surroundings, squinting his eyes slightly.
He had a bold idea.
He approached a stone wall, put away his black light alloy sword, and began to climb using his hands and feet.
The wall was steep; if Lu Yuan were still an average person, climbing it would be impossible.
But as a Gene Warrior, his physical abilities far exceeded those of a normal person. His limbs were strong, his muscles coordinated, and his body agile. In a short time, he had scaled about 30-40 meters up the cliff.
As soon as his head popped over the edge, he was blasted by howling winds carrying sand, which pained his face as his skin was not very thick.
The tremendous force nearly knocked him backwards. Caught off guard, his hands slipped from the wall, and he started to fall backwards.
Feeling the emptiness in his arms, Lu Yuan’s pupils dilated and his heart nearly stopped. From a height of 30-40 meters, even with his current abilities, falling would be fatal.
At the last second, Lu Yuan’s black light alloy sword materialized in his hand; bracing himself, he stabbed it into the wall.
Ssssh!
The sword pierced into the stone, and with his right hand gripping it tightly, Lu Yuan stabilized his position.
He gasped for breath, his eyes wide with the shock of the near fall.
“Damn, that scared the life out of me! Thought I was a goner.”
After regaining his composure, Lu Yuan pushed himself up and climbed onto the desert plateau.
The region was already known for its strong sandstorms, especially fierce at this height of several dozen meters. One could easily be blown away.
Lu Yuan planted his alloy sword into the ground and steadied himself with effort.
Despite this, he didn’t dare open his eyes as the sand whipped painfully against his face.
Fortunately, Lu Yuan was well-prepared.
A smile crept across his face as he pulled out a pair of goggles he had purchased after reading about them in a post for newcomers.
Given the harsh environmental conditions in the initial cities of the Land of Origin like Stormwind City and Sandstone City, where winds howled constantly, goggles were essential.
After all, there wasn’t any newly awakened apprentice Gene Warrior who was immune to having acid thrown in their eyes without consequence.
Lu Yuan slipped on the goggles and, feeling proud of his foresight and thorough preparation, he thought to himself, ‘Well done, me!’
With the goggles on, he could finally open his eyes.
He assessed the surroundings. Due to the extreme winds, no Ash Stone Beetle would venture to such a place.
For the beetles, it didn’t matter where they fed; why endure such torment in this forsaken place?
Lu Yuan scanned the area: it was open and rough, the ground uneven with depressions and marked by the relentless wind.
He walked forward a distance, reaching a U-shaped dead-end on the cliff. Peering over the edge, Lu Yuan looked down.
From his high vantage point, he could see two Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles below.
From this distance, the beetles looked no bigger than his thumb, and the wooden treasure chest appeared just as small.
While observing from above, the two beetles showed no signs of disturbance, continuing to savour the rocks below with relish.
Clearly, even Elite Level Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles’ sensory range did not extend to Lu Yuan’s position, which reassured him.
With this in mind, his subsequent plan became much simpler.
“Let’s see if things go as I expect,” Lu Yuan muttered to himself with a grin.
He approached a nearby stone column, about as thick as a person could wrap their arms around, and easily snapped off a chunk of stone from a protruding part.
He then squeezed the stone, which crumbled into fine grit with little effort.
Lu Yuan raised an eyebrow and whistled.
Erosion.
Even the hardest rocks couldn’t withstand the force of nature under such fierce winds.
Water can wear down stone, so what chance does stone stand against relentless winds?
Lu Yuan felt his plan solidifying.
“Let’s test these two fellows’ reactions.”
He eyed the two Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles below, raising an eyebrow with a more solemn expression.
Next, he found an unweathered stone about the size of a basketball.
Positioning himself above the plateau at a safe distance from the beetles, he took a deep breath and with a strong heave of his right hand, hurled the stone toward the ground about 200 meters from the Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles.
Bang!
The stone hit the ground with a loud thud.
The noise was tremendous; the two beetles below raised their heads and looked toward the source of the sound.
Their antennae twitched as they exchanged glances.
Shortly thereafter, the beetle on the right charged toward the sound.
The other beetle remained stationary, unmoving from its spot.
From his high vantage point, Lu Yuan frowned slightly.
Two pieces of bad news.
First, such a disturbance had only managed to divert one beetle. Even with one beetle remaining, he couldn’t get close to the wooden treasure chest.
Second, the speed of these Black Mark Ash Stone Beetles was alarmingly fast—40%-50% faster than a regular beetle.
At such a speed, if Lu Yuan were spotted, he might as well close his eyes and wait for the end; not even divine intervention could save him.
“Why is there such a disparity when they’re all nurtured by the same rocky diet?” Lu Yuan puzzlingly mused.
He had a solution for the second issue, but the first one still posed a significant challenge.
As Lu Yuan contemplated, the beetle that had run off reached the area where the stone had fallen.
Upon seeing the broken stones on the ground, the beetle squeaked sharply. It looked around, its antennae vibrating as it assessed the situation.
After a moment and finding no threat, it expressed its confusion with more sharp squeaks before scampering back.
Watching the beetle return and seeing both start feeding again, Lu Yuan thought for a moment and then smiled.
“Time for the second experiment.”
This time, Lu Yuan gathered two basketball-sized stones.
He gripped them and threw each stone in opposite directions toward the two pathways.
Thump, thump!
Two more loud noises echoed.
The beetles, just resuming their meal, looked up again and issued frantic squeals. Clearly, being disturbed twice in quick succession didn’t sit well with them.
Their sharp claws scraped the hard ground, leaving visible marks.
The beetles exchanged glances and their antennae twitched again.
This time, the beetle on the left charged out, while the one on the right stayed behind.
Soon, the beetle that had dashed out reached the first landing point.
Like the previous one, it checked its surroundings, and after finding no enemies, it let out a few cries before running to the second spot. Finding nothing there either, it screamed in frustration.
Squeak, squeak, squeak!
During its outcry, its claws scraped the fallen debris and its sharp mandibles gnawed at the stones, crunching loudly.
Once it had finished off the stones, it contentedly trotted back.
Lu Yuan arched an eyebrow and initiated the third experiment.
This time, he picked three rocks and threw them simultaneously in three different directions.
Thump, thump, thump!
The dull sounds rang out once more. The two beetles, about to enjoy their meal, instantly looked up.
This time, without any exchange, they both screamed and charged toward the sounds.
Lu Yuan’s eyes sparkled with a hint of triumph.
The first problem was solved.
Now for the second issue: the beetles’ swift speed.
After diverting the beetles, his next challenge was to quickly open the wooden treasure chest and then make his escape.
Regarding this issue, Lu Yuan already had a plan.
