Chapter 43: The devil
"ahhhh!" Marta gave a loud, startling scream when the beast Lucian was trying to communicate with opened its mouth to form two words. 'Help me.'
"If you scream again, I'm going to cut off your tongue." Luna threatened. Her eardrums felt like they were bleeding because of Marta's loud voice.
"Captain, the beast is dying." Soren said. He didn't want the beast to die so quickly, not when Lucian had finally made progress.
'Don't tell me that this thing is dying faster than it's supposed to because of the amount of beast magic I'm pouring into its cells in order to force it to speak to me.' Lucian thought. Suddenly he felt the presence of someone moving fast towards the stony little tent Marta made. He deactivated his beast magic, and just in time before the front of the tent was broken down.
"I think we have an unwelcome guest." Lucian turned his attention away from the beast and placed his hands on his sword. His teammates copy his movement.
"You!"
Thorin and Lucian both said in surprise at the same time. Lucian was surprised to see that Thorin was still alive. He chewed on the gum of his cheek as he thought that Thorin was better off dead.
Thorin examined the two new faces that were with Lucian, along with the dying beast bleeding out by the side. Before breaking in, he had felt the presence of two beasts and also followed the helpless scream of a young lady. He pinned his gaze on Marta and wondered what sick activity Lucian was up to this time around. Thorin felt like Lucian was about to hurt another human, like he did with Nova and Skai. He ignores the missing presence of the second beast he had felt because, to him, Lucian was no different from a beast.
Lucian stared openly at Thorin's one arm. "Seems like you have been through a lot to stay alive." He gave out a dry laugh. Thorin looks a lot bulkier than before, with scary unhealed scars around his body. "Get out of my hideout, unless you want to lose your last pieces of arm." It didn't matter to Lucian if Thorin left or not; he was still going to attack him. After all, in order for the hellish game to come to an end, Thorin needed to die.
"There's no redemption for crappy souls like yours, Lucian, always evil, always looking for innocent life to destroy. Hand over the lady and the young man you are holding captive, and then I will walk away for now and leave you alone." Thorin's plan was to take Marta and Soren to safety where his teammates were; afterwards, he would come back for Lucian.
'What nonsense is he talking about?' Lucian frowned.
"I think there's a misunderstanding." Luna started out. "Soren and Marta are part of our team; they are not being held against their will."
Soren laughed when he realized that Thorin thought that he was being held captive.
"No one asked you to speak on their behalf." Thorin snaps, "Your misfortune in this game is partnering with Lucian. You are also responsible for Nova's death." He gritted out.
Luna shrugs while thinking that Thorin wasn't completely wrong.
Marta barely reacted, creating a stony shield around Luna when her senses felt that Luna was in danger. Her shield was easily knocked down by Thorin; he held a fine, strong sword that was black, radiating strong heat as though it was made out of lava. Never before has Marta seen earth elemental magic used in such a unique way; her imagination could never dream of it until now.
Suspending his lava blade in the air, Thorin worked fast as he controlled the earth under Soren and Marta's feet to move them to his side, where he could lead them to safety. He couldn't believe that anyone except for Luna would partner themselves with Lucian.
'I'm sure that he's not using all of his strength, and yet he's still so strong.' Lucian tried attacking Thorin, but before he could move, Thorin had captured the earth under his feet and moved him backwards. Lucian fell on his knees as he lost his footing. The dying beast was close to him, and he glared at the beast, knowing fully well that Thorin set him up in a hopeless state when the beast had the opportunity to raise its last dying claws against him, but Thorin didn't know about Lucian's beast ability, and although it was hidden, the beast didn't dare lift a finger against Lucian.
Thorin's lips formed into a thin line when he saw that his plans had failed. He had hoped to watch Lucian struggle helplessly against the beast beside him before he leaves with the humans he saved.
"Didn't you hear that half-face girl?" Marta asked, annoyed. "Lucian has done nothing wrong to us; we are his teammates." She hated how strong and advanced Thorin's magic was; it was something she had never seen before.
Thorin gave Marta a gentle smile. "You are safe now; you don't have to be afraid of Lucian anymore. He can never hurt you again."
From afar, Luna glared at Marta as she thought of the words "half-face."
Soren kicked Thorin hard in the face; Thorin fell down on his butt, the side of his cheek throbbing from pain. He was surprised to have been attacked by the same people he rescued. He tried to stop Marta from running back to Lucian's side, but she raised her blade against him, distracting him and giving Soren the perfect opportunity to kick Thorin down again.
"Who the hell do you think you are?" Soren sneered, "What makes you think that we are going to do nothing and let you attack our captain?"
Understanding fell on Thorin; finally he was realizing the mistake of his own delusion. From how angry Soren was to the careful way Marta checked on Lucian to see if he was injured, it means only one thing. Two innocent souls have chosen to partner themselves with the devil; no doubt they knew who Lucian was and how he killed Nova and boasted about it to every player in the game.
'How could they?' Thorin thought, wondering if Lucian had brainwashed them.
