Chapter 42: A nasty prison

"I'm starting to miss Lucian's beast aura." Luna jumps out of the way in order to avoid being hit by a fireball that came from a flying beast. Its wings were scaled and had no feathers; it had five eyes.

The flying beast whips its short tail in the air as it moves its head in an effort to pinpoint Lucian and his teammates' exact location. They had separated themselves in order to make the hungry beast confused.

"Didn't you call my beast aura a problem?" Lucian ticks his tongue in annoyance as he hides behind a tree. Among all beasts, the ones he hated the most were those who could control elemental magic. Defeating them wasn't impossible, but it was taxing and took too much mana.

"It's only a problem when it's time for hunting, but it would be good if you let out that beast aura of yours now and helped us chase this thing away!" Luna yelled. If they ran from the fire-breathing creature, it was only going to persistently chase after them while burning up the forest.

Lucian considered Luna's words and thought back to the girl who died over a cliff after finding out his secret. Lucian didn't want to take any more reckless action like he did before.

"Don't listen to her, captain." Marta throws a heavy rock in the air at the beast and misses. "I'm sure that being able to control your beast aura isn't easy." She frowned at Luna while thinking that Luna was being inconsiderate.

'It's actually not that hard.' Lucian thought. He wasn't going to reveal his other hidden abilities; after all, he didn't know who could be secretly watching them. They weren't in a secluded place.

"Soren!" Lucian called out. "Distract the beast, Marta, cover me!" He ordered and then ran out of his hiding spot. Leaving himself out in the open, the beast wasted no time in releasing another heated flame his way, but Marta was able to block the attack with her sandy shield.

Soren grabbed the beast's attention, running away as the beast speedily moved towards his direction, setting the claws on its short leg.

Lucian used his knight skills to speedily climb a tree; he jumped from tree to tree behind the beast and then used his sword to cut down one of the beast's wings before it could harm Soren.

"And now it's my turn." Luna smiled and gripped her sword in her hand.

The beast was on the ground wounded and couldn't move; its short legs weren't meant for walking or running away. It could only hop on like a helpless rabbit while using its flames to desperately try to stop the humans from attacking it while it is down.

Luna was still able to get through the beast's defense, and just when she was about to strike the beast down with her poisonous blade, Lucian interfered, striking her blade with his.

"Don't kill it." Lucian examines the beast's wounded state. Its wings were a weak point; the beast couldn't breathe out fire again, it was too focused on its pain.

"Why?" Luna asked, confused, as she kept her blade away.

"There's something I want to try. From the state of its wounds, the beast isn't going to last for long." Lucian faced Marta, instructing her to use her magic to create a temporary tent for them so he could activate his beast magic.

"Please don't tell me that this place is going to be our new base?" Luna frowned. They were changing their camp base before they were suddenly attacked by the flying beast.

"Quit your whining." Soren snapped and moved closer to Lucian and the beast, who was now shaking in fear after Lucian's aura had been activated. "What are you doing, Captain?" He smiled.

"I'm not whining." Luna mumbles to herself.

"Don't worry, we will be out of here once I'm done." Lucian said without moving his eyes from the beast. He didn't plan on staying too long in an open space that wasn't good enough for a hideout. It may seem like one beast now, but when the day becomes darker, more will appear. They were beasts who prefer hunting at night.

"Aren't you done with your staring contest yet?" Luna asked Lucian, joining the others to pay attention to what Lucian was up to. It had been half an hour, and Lucian's eyes were still pinned on the beast that was bleeding away.

"It's not a staring contest." Marta stated out in Lucian's defense, "Can't you feel the amount of beast mana Captain Lucian has released since he started?"

Luna and Soren were both surprised; they had only focused on the beast, without paying much attention to Lucian.

"I'm trying to communicate with the beast through my mind, but it's not working." Lucian stated out in defeat. For a moment, he thought about if he should give up on his wild thoughts of being able to communicate with beasts.

"It's a mindless creature. Of course it's not working!" Soren said.

"The tree beast the Achiloq brothers had tied us to was also a mindless creature, and yet the brothers were able to communicate with it. If those ugly brothers could do it. I'm sure that you can do it, Captain. Don't give up!"

'Don't encourage him in something that is impossible.' Luna sighs and crosses her arms around her chest. Deciding to wait silently until Lucian was done with his failed trial and they could all continue their journey again.

"Thanks." Lucian said to Marta. "If I could get the beast in Hlasked to communicate with me, there's so much we are going to find out. We could know more about our system magic, this game, and those 12 jerks who took us away from our home to perish here."

With how long beasts had existed in Hlasked, Lucian wanted to find out what they knew. He was curious about their existence, and as much as Hlasked looked like a home to them, Lucian felt like the truth about the beast in Hlasked could be darker. If Hlasked was a paradise to the beast, then the Achiloq brothers wouldn't have escaped from their dungeon and be so obsessed with power. The beasts in Hlasked weren't exactly friendly to their own kind. Hlasked was like a predator ground for every creature, a nasty prison no one could escape from.
