Chapter 41: Cruel human
A busted skull and red human blood pouring out of Skai's open dead eyes made the others who were with Reed gag out in disgust over the awful sight of Skai's dead body. Reed, however, made no reaction to Skai's dead body; he stared at her face, making sure that she was the one he had been looking for, and then slowly moved his gaze to her broken, twisted limbs. He was surprised to see that every part of her was still intact. He lifted his head up over the hills and thought to himself that Skai must have fallen to her death.
Reed used his finger to touch Skai's blood regardless of the expression of his colleagues, who recoiled away from him. It made Reed shake his head in disappointment because they were acting like babies; an attitude like that would soon put them in the same state as Skai, Reed was sure of it, but as always kept his thoughts to himself, never sharing them with anyone, no matter how much they tried poking their nose into his business. Skai's blood was a bit warm but soon turned cold; it made Reed realize that it hasn't been long since she died. Good thing he found her earlier before any beast roaming the forest took a bite out of her. If that were to happen, he would have to endlessly search for Skai because of Thorin's orders.
"Carry her. We are taking her dead body to the captain." Reed order. The men with him were reluctant at first but still had no choice but to obey him; after Thorin's words, Reed's words were absolute law. Thorin won't tolerate anyone who stands against him and would let Reed kill whoever he seems fit without asking the reason why.
Thorin froze over the sight of Skai's dead body that had been brought to his feet. Once again he felt like a failure; he had promised everyone in his team that he would protect them, and yet someone he cared about still died.
"Don't blame yourself for this." Reed said, studying the emotions on Thorin's face. "Her foolish disobedience and weakness is the only one responsible for her death. No one told her to scout around the forest, but she still went ahead; probably she felt like she was doing us a favor, but in the end she got herself killed by falling off a cliff." Hatred filled Reed's voice as he thought of how weak Skai was; he hated people he thought were like himself, weak with no hope for growth. It was like an impossible feat to grab that was filled with continuous anger.
"Skai was murdered." Thorin stated in a dark tone. Tears glister in his eyes as he bends down, blinking away his tears so that he could have a proper look at Skai's hands.
At the tip of her nails was a bit of human skin that had been scratched off along with a little tint of dry blood. "She was killed by a human, probably another player." He clenched his jaw in anger. "Why would someone be so heartless as to murder a person as defenseless as her?" He asked in rage but got no reply. Thorin couldn't imagine Skai doing anything bad against anyone. She was a sweet and timid girl that was finally opening up to the team, and now she was gone.
Reed wanted to tell Thorin that there was no one around when he found Skai; the place was completely deserted. He doubted Thorin's theory of Skai being murdered, but after seeing the dark expressions on Thorin's face, he kept his doubt to himself; after all, nothing he said or did would change his captain's mind.
"Do we have anyone who can use earth elemental magic?" Thorin asked Reed.
"Yes, captain." Reed moved immediately to get the one Thorin needed. Although Thorin had been introduced to every new member in his team, on most days he still insisted on fighting alone without the assistance of his teammates.
Thorin fought alone not because he wanted to show off his strength like his former self would have done, but because he wanted to protect his new teammates. As long as they trusted in him wholeheartedly, he was confident that he could win any battle, and he wasn't entirely wrong. As sentimental as Thorin's reasons may be, his system magic responded to the kind wish of his teammates and increased his strength.
"I will avenge you." Thorin closed Skai's dead, wide eyes. "I swear."
"You called for me, Captain." A new voice spoke up, gaining Thorin's attention.
"How strong is your system magic?" Thorin asked, "Can you recreate a human coffin?" He wanted to give Skai a proper burial, one that resembled what they would have done in their world. Since he couldn't bring her back home as promised, he felt like this was the least he should do.
"Captain." Reed called out, his voice grim, "I think burning her body into ash would be better."
Reed had thought that since they were in a land full of magical beasts, what was the assurance that Skai's body would remain untouched after the burial? A beast could dig her up and eat her; he doubted that the beast would care about if Skai's skin was rotten or fresh. A meal was still a meal.
Reed had tried explaining his reasons to Thorin, but Thorin wouldn't agree, and Reed didn't care much about who died and what happened to their dead bodies afterwards to argue with Thorin.
Just when Skai's grave was being covered through the use of earth magic, a monster sprang out from the forest in an attempt to ambush Thorin and his teammates. The beast jumps at Reed with his mouth wide open. Reed didn't move, nor did he blink, but only watched the beast with a lack of interest, knowing that he was going to survive the attack because Thorin was there.
Within a flash, Thorin had the beast pinned on the ground with his one arm that held the beast's mouth, breaking its canine in rage. "This was meant to be a perfect funeral, not something that's to be interrupted by the likes of you."
Reed gestured for the one covering Skai's grave to carry on and ignore the beast.
The poor hungry furry beast looks less vicious with most of its huge canines gone. Thorin punched it, unleashing the pain and anger he felt over Skai's death on his poor prey. There was one cruel human Thorin knew was capable of such an evil deed. He had done it before with Nova; Thorin suspected that he was the same one responsible for Skai's death, Lucian. Before Thorin had passed through the dungeon king portal, he had confirmed from the demon about if Lucian was outside the dungeon. And the dungeon king had replied yes.
