Chapter 6: The First Beast(2)
After a while, he arrived at the Bio Garden within the academy.
The garden was an enormous dome filled with artificially created wild flora, a self-contained ecosystem thriving within. Looking around, Sein couldn't help but marvel at the sheer scale and complexity.
Sein approached the gate to the Bio Garden, where a worker was busy with some tasks nearby. Noticing him, the worker looked up and asked, "What brings you here?"
Sein approached the worker and explained, "I've come to get a beast for my career, and, I have got the necessary permission for it from the Resources Distribution Chamber."
"Do you have any proof?" the worker asked, eyeing Sein curiously.
Sein nodded and handed him the paper with the stamp and written details.
The worker examined it for a moment, then nodded. "Okay, this is enough." He glanced at Sein and motioned toward the path. "You can follow me"
After a while, the worker led Sein along a fixed path, guiding him towards an open area. In the center of the space stood a man wearing a white coat and a pair of glasses, focused on some tasks at hand. Upon noticing their arrival, he looked up.
"Why did you bring a student here?" asked the man in the white coat curiously.
"Prof. Adam, the thing is..." the worker began, explaining the details while handing over the note to the professor.
Prof. Adam took a moment to read the note, verifying its contents. Then, he turned his attention to Sein.
"Well, you're here to get a beast for your career, and everything seems to be in order," Prof. Adam said after reviewing the note. "I should clarify a few things. While our academy is well-backed by the city and has a variety of resources, the Bio Garden is primarily used for research and behavioral studies on beasts. The creatures here are mainly studied for their temperaments and interactions, so we don't have as many varieties as you might find on the open market. It's possible that you may not find a beast that fully meets your expectations," he said, gesturing for Sein to follow him.
"Understood, Professor," he said respectfully, following Prof. Adam deeper into the garden.
Prof. Adam led Sein to a large area within the Bio Garden, where a wide variety of beasts were housed in separate enclosures. The space was organized into sections, each home to different types of creatures. Some sections housed birds with colorful, iridescent feathers that fluttered about gracefully, while others contained more familiar feline-like beasts, sleek and agile, prowling around their spaces.
There were also enclosures holding Chimera-type creatures, hybrids of multiple species, their strange and awe-inspiring forms a mix of the fantastic and the fearsome. The diversity was overwhelming, and each creature seemed to embody the essence of nature's wildness.
Prof. Adam began to introduce the beasts one by one, pointing out the unique traits of each. But among all the creatures, it was three in particular that seized Sein's attention.
The first was the Four-Armed Barbaric Ape, a massive and intimidating creature with four muscular arms rippling with strength. Its brown fur looked coarse and matted in places, and its broad chest and thick neck only added to its imposing physique. The ape's powerful arms were crossed over its chest as it gazed around, its piercing eyes filled with a ferocious energy. A group of them moved around the enclosure, their bodies shifting with raw power, showcasing the creature's natural brute strength.
The second was the Dark Dog, a sleek, black creature with a lean but muscular frame. Its coat glimmered in the dim light, almost as if it absorbed the surroundings. The beast's eyes were sharp and calculating, scanning him like a hunter tracking prey. Its fangs, sharp and prominent, were visible as it opened its mouth slightly, showcasing its raw power and predatory instincts. It was a solitary creature, but a group of them roamed the enclosure, occasionally locking eyes with him.
Finally, the Green Jade Mantis stood out with its striking appearance. The mantis-like head, sharp and angular, was accompanied by a body seemingly made of smooth, translucent green jade that gleamed in the sunlight. Its legs were long and powerful, but its most notable feature was the pair of sickle-like blades attached to its forearms. The creature's agility was unparalleled, and it moved quickly, darting in and out of the shadows. Several of them were gathered together in their living space, their sharp, jade-like bodies glistening as they shifted in perfect synchronization.
Sein observed each of them closely, considering their traits, power, and utility. The choice ahead of him would not be an easy one.
While Sein was deep in thought, weighing the pros and cons of each beast, a sudden "DING" echoed in his mind, sharp and mechanical.
Startled, he looked around, but everything appeared normal. Then it struck him—his otaku instincts from his previous life kicked in. Could this be... a system? he thought, excitement bubbling inside him.
Testing the waters, he called out in his mind, 'System?' For a moment, there was silence, and Sein began to feel foolish. Maybe I imagined it, he thought, shaking his head. But just as doubt crept in, a translucent interface materialized before his eyes, glowing softly.
---
[ HOST DETECTED!
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE HOST BIND A BEAST WITH A COMPATIBILITY SCORE OF 75% OR HIGHER TO UNLOCK THE SYSTEM'S FULL FUNCTIONALITY. ]
---
Sein stared at the words, his heart racing. It really is a system! he thought, elated. But his joy quickly turned into concern as he reread the message. Bind a beast with high compatibility? How am I supposed to figure that out?
The task seemed impossible. The beasts here were impressive, but determining compatibility wasn't something he could simply guess.
System, how do I even check which beast has the highest compatibility with me? he asked in frustration, hoping for an answer.
---
[ REQUEST ACKNOWLEDGED. VALID ISSUE IDENTIFIED.
THE HOST HAS BEEN GRANTED THE SKILL "HEART EYE" TO FACILITATE THE PROCESS. ]
---
The interface shimmered momentarily, and Sein felt a strange warmth spread through his mind. A moment later, an innate understanding of the skill called "Heart Eye" settled within him. The skill allowed him to visually gauge the compatibility of any beast within his sight.
Curious to test its effects, Sein activated the skill and looked around at the beasts nearby. Almost immediately, faint numbers began to appear above the heads of the creatures. Most of the numbers ranged between 5 and 10, with some slightly higher at 10 to 20, and a few reaching as high as 20 to 30.
Unconvinced, he scanned the entire area, observing beasts of various types except for the three that had caught his interest earlier. Despite his thorough search, the highest number he could find was 45. Not a single beast exceeded 50, let alone approached the compatibility threshold of 75 that the system had mentioned.
Sein first focused on the four-armed Barbaric Ape. As he scanned the group, the highest compatibility score he saw was only 39%—even lower than the previous highest score he'd found among the other beasts. Disappointed but undeterred, he moved on to the Green Jade Mantis.
Among the group of mantises, most displayed scores below 40%. Just as he was beginning to lose hope, one particular Green Jade Mantis caught his eye. The shimmering number above its head read 76%, finally meeting the system's requirements. Excitement flickered in Sein's heart at the discovery.
But before he could fully commit, something caught his attention—a glint of light from the Dark Dog enclosure. His gaze shifted, landing on a small, underaged black dog at the edge of the group. Above its head, glowing brighter than any score he'd seen so far, was a staggering 97% compatibility.
