Monster Gacha System: Becoming The Final Boss

Chapter 055 | Paranormal Monsters

Early in the morning, Damien roused from his slumber and opened his eyelids. His sable-tinted gaze stared at the smooth ceiling in a daze as memories of last night flooded into his mind. The annihilation of two cardinal families and the acquisition of over a dozen monsters.

His stupor snapped as he rose from his bed, astounded and excited by what he had received from the gacha system. His Skill Index was brimming with abilities waiting to be discovered, and most importantly, it was time to see his first paranormal monsters.

Without a second thought, Damien turned his attention towards the empty space of his private quarters and summoned the weakest of paranormal monsters. The Banshee, the Shadow Hound, and Onryo.

'Unfortunately, I cannot summon the Dullahan and the Oni. After all, I doubt any one of them would be able to fit into my room.' He thought to himself as spectral figures materialized before his perception.

The first one to make its appearance was the Banshee. It was a floating lady whose upper half only remained. Strands of her hair shifted along the air as her jaw stretched, capable of screaming others into death.

What followed was his Shadow Hound. It emerged from the shadows of his furniture, resembling a phantom black wolf adept in hunting through the shadows of the world. Its eyes were soulless, yet fearsome.

The last was the Onryo, and its awakening was dumbfounding. The ceiling lights of his private quarters flickered as the air chilled. She materialized before him, tall and deadly. Her attire was a yukata while her face was covered by the strands of her pitch-black hair.

Even though she was merely a first-star summoned monster, a sense of oppression emanated from her. Without a doubt, the ghost lady was capable of intelligence. After all, he could feel its gaze permeating through her bangs.

It was as though he was being observed, judged, and barely qualified.

"Can others physically interact with any of you?" Damien questioned, since it was the most crucial aspect of the paranormal monsters. Their status as spectral entities made them efficient and low-maintenance summoned monsters.

The Banshee continued staring at him while the Shadow Hound tilted its head. The Onryo stepped forward and graciously bowed before responding to its master with unearthly esteem.

"Lord Oberon, we are ghostly apparitions, incapable of interacting with the material world without a cursed target." Her words echoed, gentle yet spine-chilling. Her face remained hidden behind strands of her pitch-black hair as she stepped back, awaiting her master's response.

Damien's obsidian-like eyes widened somewhat, stunned by the soothing voice of the ghost lady. Her pure white yukata was motionless, unbothered by the surge of emotions that flooded her master's heart. The reason for his reaction was simple.

It was the first time a monster spoke to him in such a human-like way. Even though Makina could converse with him, there was that underlying robotic monotone voice that made him realize he was talking to a machine. But the Onryo was different.

She wasn't a machine or a typical intelligent monster. She was a ghost lady, a former human who had lost her right in the living world.

Calming himself, Damien gazed at the ghost lady and shifted his body a bit forward while sitting on the edge of his bed. "Does that mean that paranormal monsters rely on curses to interact with the material world?"

"Indeed, Lord Oberon. Spectral entities require curses to establish a bridge to the material reality for interaction. These curses have their demands, whether it'd be objects, genders, ages, ranks, moralities, and nature."

"Demands, huh?" Damien remembered watching horror movies and noticing that ghosts needed a peculiar object or nature to start cursing the characters within the films.

Turning his attention towards the ghost lady, he couldn't help but calmly inquire about the demands of her curses. "As an Onryo, can you tell me the demands of your curse? And can you also tell my theirs?"

He pointed at the Banshee and Shadow Hound, wondering what the demands of their curses were. The ghost lady slightly glanced at the spectral entities beside her before answering her master.

"I am a vengeful ghost, Lord Oberon. My curse is vengeance. Those with an evil nature will incur retribution." The Onryo then added after halting for a moment. "Unfortunately, I cannot understand them."

"But rest assured, we, your followers, are capable of adapting to the commands of our Lord." What she meant was simple. The only thing he needed to do was point in a direction, and they would handle whatever was pointed at.

"I see... Thank you, I will be relying on you three." Damien nodded at her, satisfied that a summoned monster was capable of talking without sounding like an indifferent robot. However, curiosity also struck him out of nowhere.

Since the ghost lady was capable of intelligence, did she have a name of her own? He couldn't help but ponder the possibility.

"Hmm... Do you have a name?" Damien asked and was straightforward with his intentions. He wanted to know her name, and if she didn't have one, he intended to name her himself. After all, speaking with someone and not being able to call them by their name was troublesome.

The Onryo tilted her head, strands of her pitch-black hair shifting as her ghostly eye peered through the clustered bangs. Her lips hesitantly opened, a question escaping her throat. "My name?"

"I do not know my name, Lord Oberon- No, I have no name to speak of." The ghostly lady answered patiently and respectfully to her master. Even with her intelligence, she lacked the knowledge of her identity and name.

It was as though she had forgotten her former life beyond that of a vengeful ghost. But perhaps, it was for the best. Her current state was the best to serve her master without the troubles of memories that could impede her loyalty and allegiance.

"No name..." Damien placed his finger beneath his chin and carefully thought of a name that would be perfect for her. Noticing her white and silky yukata, his contemplation ended with a name in mind.

"How about Yuki? Is this name adequate?" He asked the ghost lady, who quivered for a moment before deeply bowing towards him. Her supple lips trembled as she asserted with admiration. "This follower is honored to be named by Lord Oberon."

"Yuki... It shall be my name until the end of my existence."

"No need for the spectacle." Damien waved his hand and glanced at the two paranormal monsters beside her. "I would like to name you two, but sadly, I need time and an understanding of your personalities."

He took the naming process of his summoned monsters seriously. After all, their given names would become their identities. He didn't want unpleasant names for his monsters.

"In any case, I will summon you later for further inquisition." Damien smiled at them and stood up from his comfortable bed. The paranormal monsters bowed their heads before dissolving into spectral dust.

The young man walked to his wardrobe and put on his usual SIGIL uniform. There were a couple of sets within the closet. After wearing them, he placed his distinctive fedora over his head and stepped out of his private quarters.

It was early in the morning, yet he headed towards the office as he wanted to check in with his boss for future assignments. He was a dutiful subordinate of Block 7, though there weren't many of them within the tower.

Only four members resided within the confines of their headquarters. Two of which was the leader and the second-in-command of the seventh Division. It was somewhat desolate, so he looked forward to seeing it brimming with juniors in the far future.

Reaching the office in the summit, Damien entered the room and straightened his back after noticing Francine standing beside Alastair. The beautiful white-haired lady placed her files on the table and smirked at her Aberrant. "Look who got stronger."

He rubbed the back of his head and barely held his smile since he didn't expect the expansion of his monster army to be noticed by outside parties. It seems that he needed to be careful when utilizing the Gacha Banners of the System.

"Any assignment for me, Miss Alastair?" Damien inquired, wanting to test himself through an operation. The annihilation of two cardinal families should have caused ripples throughout New Janus and the central states.

With this in mind, he was confident that assignments were waiting for him within the wooden desk of his boss. Obviously, his eagerness was easy for Alastair and Francine to see. The white-haired lady chuckled at her Aberrant and remarked. "You want to test yourself, hm?"

"Well, you and your partner exterminating two of the strongest criminal syndicates within New Janus has caused waves within the city. Those who belonged to the underworld are becoming restless."

"Usually, I would have given this job to the two cardinal families under our command. Sadly, they are busy handling the power vacuum left behind the annihilated criminal syndicates." Alastair shook her head as though saddened. But it made her resemble a devil.

After all, a smile remained on her face, which was jarring to her behavior.

"Inside this file is a list of gangs and criminal organizations scattered throughout New Janus. I want them controlled or terminated." The seventh Paragon handed a file to the black-suited young man and added. "After handling this assignment, you should take a rest."

"I want you to be ready for an external operation to the north of the New World."
