Merchant Of Yliaster

Side Story 02: The First Implant

"We can take the patient in," a doctor wearing a metallic suit said, as he glanced at the table of tools beside him thoughtfully.

Almost everything on the table were new inventions, created for this operation specially. It was an honoring but also a pressuring experience to be the first operator to perform the surgery, but he was optimistic about his success.

The part that came after his success made him much more nervous, though. Soon, they carried the patient in, already sedated, as everything in the room was classified.

"Let us start then, the doctor said, and pointed a finger out, a small blade popping out of his glove. All preparations were done quickly, his team working with practiced efficiency.

He made a small incision on the scalp of the patient, carefully creating a flap for the surgery. Next came the more brutal part.

A small saw started to turn on one of his fingers, and he created an opening on the bone with it, carefully taking out the circular piece he separated. These surgical gloves were superb for their increased stability. Unfortunately, they were way too expensive to be used for regular operations.

He quickly removed some parts of the brain, which would be replaced by the implant almost seamlessly in the following weeks.

The next part was perhaps the hardest part to invent, but thanks to the scientists working on it, the process of applying it was awfully simple to implement.

The doctor was handed a small gadget in the shape of a half-sphere. The object was hollow and looked awfully simple, other than its outer side being filled with numerous small dots, but the doctor knew that this was a technological marvel.

He placed the object in the space he created, and he could feel it slowly move closer to the brain tissue. It couldn't be seen now, but he knew that the implant would invade the whole brain with microscopic wires crafted from the new etherium alloy.

It would immediately link the whole brain and every single synapse to the implant, requiring no time to get used to it. The doctor felt a bit weird about this, as it was usually better to go slow with things like this, but he supposed many people smarter than him would have thought of such a thing.

When he felt that the gadget was stable in his position, he let go of it and grabbed the implant itself.

The implant was much simpler when compared to the port, but it looked comparably much more impressive. The whole implant was eclipsed by the glow of the crystal embedded on it, this being the recently famed etherium.

The crystal was glowing with an otherworldly light, making the doctor question if it was even scientific. It looked more like something out of a fairy tale. He kept his stare short, though, as he was warned that staring at the crystal for extended periods could cause adverse effects.

He mounted the small device on the port, and without a problem, the operation was complete. It was simple work to fix the patient back up. They were not sure when he would wake up, though. The doctor glanced at the brain map on the side to see that the brain activity was still of a sedated patient for the moment.

The implant was programmed not to activate until this phase started to end. They were all curious about what would happen when that happened.

Their question was answered a moment later, as the doctor saw some of the functions starting to return on the neural map.

Unfortunately, this was the last thing he could see, as a green wave immediately exploded from the patient's head, and the doctor knew no more.

The following hours were hectic for the government, as the operation was performed in a secret base, and there was nobody left alive inside to let them in.

After some trouble, though, it was made clear that one shouldn't overload etherium.
