Marvel’s Spider-Man: Across the Multiverse

Chapter 139: Chapter 138: The Death of Mutated Garfield Spider-Man

Peter withdrew his hand and lightly tapped his toes, leaping back up to stand beside Gwen.

"Is he dead?" Gwen asked, looking down below.

Peter frowned, hesitating before replying, "I'm not sure."

From what he knew about the original storyline, there were only two effective ways to kill a symbiote. One was through a powerful explosion—like how the Venom suit was destroyed by a pumpkin bomb in Tobey Spider-Man's universe. The other was by being consumed by another symbiote—like how Venom once devoured Carnage.

But this method, using a quantum venom sting to eliminate a symbiote, was something Peter was experimenting with for the first time.

So, he wasn't entirely sure if it had worked.

Thinking about it, he picked up a rock and hurled it down with force.

Boom!

The Carnage statue shattered instantly, and soon after, a quantum collapse phenomenon occurred, erasing it completely.

In just a few moments, the only thing left behind was an empty, hollow bell.

"Peter, he's dead," Tobey Spider-Man suddenly called out.

Peter turned toward the voice and saw Tobey Spider-Man crouching beside the mutated Garfield Spider-Man.

"Dead?" Peter walked over, reaching out to check for breathing. Then, he pressed his fingers against the neck—there was no response at all.

"Did we… accidentally kill him by forcibly pulling him out?" Peter asked in confusion.

Gwen also crouched down to examine him, then shook her head. "He must have been dead for a long time already."

"What do you mean?" Peter asked.

Gwen explained, "Look, some areas of his body already show signs of livor mortis, and his blood has almost completely coagulated."

Peter was shocked. "So, this whole time… Carnage was just using his corpse as a vessel?"

Gwen nodded, her expression heavy.

Peter reached out and held her hand.

"I'm fine," Gwen forced a small smile.

The tragic fate of this universe's Peter Parker made her heart ache just thinking about it.

Turning against his best friend and personally killing him.

Watching his lover die before his eyes.

Losing his most beloved family member, who passed away in grief.

Falling to the opposite side of society, transforming from a hero into a villain.

And in the end, even he himself died a meaningless death at Carnage's hands, reduced to nothing but nourishment for the symbiote, perishing in an unknown world.

Gwen couldn't bear the thought any longer. She turned and hugged Peter tightly.

Peter sighed softly, deactivating his Vibranium suit, and whispered a few words of comfort.

Suddenly, Tobey Spider-Man's voice broke the silence. "His body is starting to distort."

Peter quickly turned his head and saw that the corpse of the mutated Garfield Spider-Man was also experiencing quantum collapse.

Gwen spoke urgently, "Can we send him back? Back to his own world?"

Peter nodded. "Piece of cake."

Stepping forward, he channeled a bit of quantum energy into the body.

Truth be told, even if Gwen hadn't asked, he would have done it anyway.

He couldn't help but wonder—

Since this was a mutated version of Garfield Spider-Man's world, did that mean this universe also had a Sorcerer Supreme?

Perhaps… a Superior Doctor Strange?

Perhaps the Electro that had yet to appear in the Amazing Universe could also be found in this mutated version of it?

After all, from what Carnage-Garfield Spider-Man had revealed, that world was already in complete chaos.

With that in mind, Peter quickly cleaned up the scene.

First, he wrapped the mutated Garfield Spider-Man's corpse in several layers of webbing, effectively mummifying him.

Then, he lifted the massive bell and returned it to the belfry of the opposite church.

Gwen, ever kind-hearted, even helped tighten it back into place.

For an ordinary person, this task would have required multiple people—some to hoist the bell, while others climbed up to weld or fasten it securely.

But with the combined efforts of three Spider-Men, it took only a few minutes to restore the bell to its rightful place.

Of course, Peter hadn't forgotten about the "little cutie" still lingering nearby.

In fact, that was the real reason he had come to this world.

Venom.

The Tobey Spider-Man version of Venom was… rather immature.

It wasn't like the one from Venom: Lethal Protector, which had a fully developed consciousness.

Its influence on the host wasn't particularly strong, either.

According to this world's Dr. Connors, the symbiote here didn't control its host's mind, but rather amplified their personality traits while significantly boosting their abilities.

For instance, when Tobey's Spider-Man was bonded with Venom, it merely brought out his more dominant and aggressive tendencies.

But in reality, that was always part of who he was.

In the first movie, when he first gained his powers and Uncle Ben was killed, Tobey's Spider-Man personally killed the man he believed was the murderer—one of Sandman's accomplices.

Back then, he hadn't exactly been the perfect "friendly neighborhood Spider-Man" either.

So, if Peter wanted to enhance his power while minimizing negative side effects, then this world's version of Venom was an ideal choice.

At this moment, after being beaten senseless—perhaps even intimidated by Carnage's gruesome demise—Venom had become exceptionally obedient.

Even its earlier attempts to escape had completely stopped.

Peter reached out, grabbing the webbed-up symbiote, but hesitated.

Though he had planned for this from the start, the idea of letting a symbiote—one that could potentially alter his personality—merge with him still made him uncertain.

Just then, Gwen suddenly stepped forward, as if making a firm decision.

She looked straight at Peter and said, "Peter, I want to bond with the Venom symbiote."

"Huh?" Peter's contemplation was shattered. He turned to Gwen, stunned.

"Why?" he asked, concerned. "This thing is dangerous. I don't want you taking risks."

Gwen shook her head, her voice resolute. "Don't forget—I'm Spider-Gwen. I'm a superhero too!"

"I want to fight alongside you, not just be your backup."

Peter fell into silence.

As his experiences grew and his quantum abilities developed, his raw power had outpaced a normal Spider-Man's by far.

For example, by channeling quantum energy into his Spider-Sense, he gained a much sharper, wider-ranged danger perception than most other Spider-People.

By infusing his arms with quantum energy, his strength could instantly skyrocket to dozens, even hundreds of tons—far surpassing the typical 20-ton limit of a normal Spider-Man.

And with the Vibranium Spider Suit's unparalleled defense, his combat power had already placed him among the strongest Spider-People.

In the past, Gwen had been able to guide and teach him—but now, she had fallen behind, reduced to playing support.

In every recent battle, it had always been Peter leading the charge while Gwen assisted from the sidelines.

This strategy made logical sense, but Peter had overlooked one thing—Gwen was just as strong-willed as he was.

She wouldn't accept being "useless."

Peter exhaled, finally understanding.

He turned to Gwen and asked seriously, "Are you sure about this?"

Gwen nodded firmly. "Yes! I'm ready to become 'Venom Spider-Gwen'!"
