Chapter 312
Strange stood in front of the Ancient One and Alex Ray, his face full of rejection and helplessness. He sighed deeply, looked at the Ancient One, and said firmly, "To be honest, I really don't want to be the Sorcerer Supreme. There's no need! Master, you're still strong—your body could easily last another thousand years."
Strange's reluctance was evident the moment he heard he was to become the Sorcerer Supreme. To outsiders, it was a prestigious title, revered and honorable. But to Strange, it felt more like a curse—thankless and burdensome.
Others may not know what being Sorcerer Supreme truly entails, but Strange knew all too well.
Without actual strength to match the title, it's just ceremonial. He was also acutely aware that this universe could support two Sorcerer Supremes simultaneously.
The Sorcerer Supreme bears the responsibility of defending Earth from interdimensional threats and demon invasions—constantly on guard. How dangerous is that?
Strange truly had no desire to accept it.
Yet, neither the Ancient One nor Alex Ray had considered Strange's feelings—or perhaps they didn't need to. In their eyes, it was only a matter of time before Strange assumed the mantle.
Alex, on the other hand, was more curious about why the Ancient One was passing on the title so early. Was her health actually failing? Did she plan to step down—or was there some other hidden reason?
Or had she seen another possible future? Alex had countless questions.
Still, having Strange take up the mantle earlier wasn't necessarily a bad thing. Once Sorcerer Supreme, he could gain access to the powers of the Vishanti and the Eight Great Demon Lords. He'd be able to wield stronger magical artifacts like the Cloak of Levitation and the Book of Knowledge, boosting his power.
In the movies, Strange only became truly formidable after inheriting the Sorcerer Supreme title. And Alex knew very well that in his past life, it was Wong who bore that title instead—but only in name. Wong was more of a manager than a front-line defender.
The current Strange was of little help to Alex. He needed Strange to power up. After all, in alternate universes, Strange had faced Thanos alone—or wielded the Darkhold to obliterate entire realities.
Strange, across the Marvel multiverse, was often a walking catastrophe. Brilliant, yes, but often unstable—prone to reckless decisions that could endanger the multiverse. Even their own universe's Strange had concerning tendencies.
Of course, someone without that edge wouldn't have been able to defeat Dormammu in the first place. But that same edge also made him a ticking time bomb.
That's why Alex wanted him to travel together and hear firsthand about the other universes—parallel versions of themselves and the consequences of their actions.
Once Strange became Sorcerer Supreme, maybe he'd move the Sanctum into Hell's Kitchen. And Alex—who had long had his eye on the magicians of Kamar-Taj—would finally have a reason to pull them into his domain.
Hell's Kitchen Community College might even add a magic class someday.
All for the kids of Hell's Kitchen.
So for the future of the community—and to push Strange toward becoming Sorcerer Supreme—Alex had to make the call.
"No problem, Master," Alex replied without hesitation. "I'll take Strange with me."
Then Alex patted Strange on the shoulder, his gaze full of encouragement and anticipation.
His eyes practically said, "Bro, I'm going to take on Thanos for you, so the least you can do is take one for the team. Trust my intentions."
Strange stared back at him, speechless. He knew exactly what Alex was up to.
The bastard just wanted the Kamar-Taj mages.
One of the reasons Strange was so cautious around Alex was because of how similar they were. But where Strange worried about not being strong enough, Alex worried about protecting his people—Hell's Kitchen, his partners, his adopted family.
In short, both of them feared being underpowered.
Strange could protest all he wanted, but there was no way out. He couldn't beat the two people standing before him, and even if he ran to the North Pole, they'd find him. He'd seen what Alex was capable of.
At worst, he could delegate the responsibilities to someone else and go back to being a surgeon. After all, once you're the Sorcerer Supreme, no one can really order you around.
He also needed to power up, and Alex was clearly flexing his strength as leverage.
Strange had to get stronger. He'd take the title… and then get revenge on Alex.
With a deep sigh, Strange forced a smile and suddenly embraced Alex tightly.
Gritting his teeth, he leaned in and muttered under his breath, "Thanks."
At that moment, he desperately wanted to summon a crimson chain and strangle Alex on the spot.
This terrible friend had dragged him into the Kamar-Taj rabbit hole—and now shoved the responsibility of Earth's protection onto his shoulders.
"It's no big deal. We're brothers, after all," Alex said, grinning.
From the sidelines, Dr. Banner from the future watched this brotherly exchange in shock. He never imagined the two had such a deep bond.
The Strange in his world didn't seem to have any real friends. Maybe he was just too arrogant. At most, they'd been allies, not comrades.
Still, Banner didn't have time for heartwarming moments. He'd already agreed to the plan, and his only goal now was to take the Infinity Stones back to his timeline.
To bring everyone back to life.
What troubled him more, though, was how these two intended to return to his universe. He wasn't even sure it was possible.
Frankly, Banner would've preferred to take the stones himself. He didn't fully trust the trio standing before him.
These three Infinity Stones were just too important.
The Ancient One picked up on Banner's unease and said, "Now that everything is clear, it's time to eliminate these invaders and bring an end to this farce!"
"Once it's over, I'll use Mr. Banner to locate the coordinates of their universe. Then I'll send you two over. Don't keep our guests waiting too long."
