Chapter 309 : Strange: Why should we help other universes?

"Excuse me… scientific theory shouldn't work like this," Dr. Banner interjected, stepping forward eagerly. His eyes gleamed with conviction as he faced the Ancient One, determined to explain the logic behind his theory.

The Ancient One's brow furrowed slightly as she studied Dr. Banner's intense expression. She understood this scientist truly believed in what he was saying.

She decided to demonstrate the complexity of the timeline and the critical importance of the Infinity Stones in a more intuitive way.

Raising her hand, she made a subtle gesture, and a ribbon of brilliant orange light bloomed into existence in the air. It looped endlessly, without beginning or end, symbolizing the flow of time and the cycle of the universe itself. She pointed to the light and spoke calmly.

"The Infinity Stones create the time flow that you perceive." As she spoke, six radiant gems appeared along the orange stream, each glowing with a different hue, like stars scattered across the void.

Dr. Banner listened intently. Standing quietly behind him, Strange also observed with curiosity, intrigued by this visual representation of the timeline.

Then, the Ancient One plucked one of the stones from the stream. "Remove one," she said, "and you create a divergence."

Instantly, the stream rippled. A dark crack split from where the stone had been removed, branching off like a fracture in glass, forming a new timeline.

"This may benefit your reality," she continued, her voice firm, "but it endangers ours. Without one of the Infinity Stones, our world loses a vital defense against the darkness. People will suffer. Catastrophe will follow. So, tell me, Doctor—can your theory stop that?"

Her voice echoed with righteousness.

Behind them, Strange gave a silent nod. Sacrificing one world to save another? Absurd.

Who was the genius behind this insane plan? Strange seriously wanted to meet the brilliant mind who decided Banner should come to another universe and borrow the Infinity Stones. Maybe give them a sarcastic round of applause.

Dr. Banner, undeterred, responded. "No, you're right—we can't prevent that. But we can restore everything. Once we use the Stones, we'll return them to their original owners, at the precise moment we took them."

He reached for the stone the Ancient One had removed and continued his explanation. "So from the perspective of the timeline, the Stones never left their universe."

The Ancient One turned toward him, her gaze sharp. "You're ignoring two critical points. First—if you're going to return the Stones, you have to survive."

Dr. Banner met her gaze without flinching. He had come from the future, and he knew how important this mission was. His voice was unwavering. "We will. I will. I promise."

The Ancient One gave a slight nod. "Even if I believe you'll survive, you still have a bigger problem—you didn't travel into your past. You entered a parallel universe. So tell me, how can you guarantee you'll return to this universe to restore what you borrowed? What if you land in yet another alternate world?"

Before Banner could answer, the Ancient One pressed on. "I can't gamble the fate of this world on your promise. The Sorcerer Supreme's duty is to protect the Time Stone."

Just as she finished, Banner scowled. "Then why did Strange hand it over?"

Her eyes narrowed, and she turned to Strange beside her. Strange looked stunned, not expecting the conversation to pivot onto him.

"What? Who is Thanos? Why would I give the Time Stone to him? I don't even want to be Sorcerer Supreme!" Strange blurted out.

The Ancient One ignored him and looked sharply at Banner. "What did you just say?"

Banner huffed. "Strange gave Thanos the Time Stone."

His tone grew heavier with every word, each syllable loaded with frustration. It was as if he blamed Strange directly for handing over the stone, which allowed Thanos to gather all six and wipe out half the universe.

"He gave it willingly?"

"Yes," Banner said firmly.

The Ancient One fell silent.

Strange stared ahead, dumbfounded. He gave the Time Stone to Thanos? With his usual caution, he wouldn't let anyone know he even had the stone, much less hand it over voluntarily. The only way someone would get it was over his dead body.

That version of him must have died.

This world is terrifying.

Who the hell was this Thanos? Strange might've handed over the Time Stone to Alex Ray—but to Thanos?

Wait… could it be that he—the Strange of that world—had already foreseen this exact scenario? Was it part of a larger plan?

Strange's eyes widened as realization dawned.

The smart one… was me. Damn it—future me outmaneuvered me.

Even other versions of Strange couldn't be trusted. This multiverse was a nightmare.

And now, that cursed Time Stone was about to be dumped on Alex Ray. Again.

He needed to stay alert—hyper-cautious. Danger was everywhere.

They didn't have enough tools yet. It was time to level up.

"Why?" the Ancient One finally asked Banner.

"How the hell should I know?" he snapped. "Maybe he made a mistake."

He hated this plan too. If he had a choice, he wouldn't be here trying to borrow the Time Stone.

The Ancient One studied Banner closely, then glanced at Strange, who was frowning deeply.

Then, as if reaching a decision, she made a sweeping gesture. Banner's astral form snapped back into his physical body.

She looked at him and said, "I will lend you the Time Stone—but not because I believe you'll come back to this universe. That's why I'm sending Strange with you."

She turned to Strange. "He will go with you, carrying the Time Stone himself."

Both Strange and Banner stiffened in unison.

"I'm afraid our machine can't transport Strange," Banner admitted awkwardly. The thought of having another Sorcerer Supreme in the fight was comforting—but they didn't have an extra quantum suit to send him back.

"It doesn't matter," the Ancient One replied calmly. "Strange has his own ways of crossing universes."

Strange looked at her like she'd lost her mind. What ways?! He wasn't that powerful—at least not yet. And more importantly, he had no desire to go.

"I refuse," Strange said flatly. "Why should we help other universes?"
