Chapter 308 : Ancient One, Strange likes you!
The Ancient One followed Dr. Banner's finger and realized this version of Banner—clearly from the future—was here to take the Time Stone from her.
When Doctor Strange heard the request, his eyes widened in disbelief. He instinctively stepped back, wanting no part in whatever madness this future Banner was planning.
"Damn… So the so-called Time Stone is actually the Eye of Agamotto? And this lunatic wants to borrow it?" If the Ancient One weren't standing between them, Strange would've attacked the guy on the spot.
When Strange first arrived at Kamar-Taj, he'd been taught that the Eye of Agamotto was a sacred relic protected by the Sorcerer Supreme, handed down for generations. It wasn't just a tool—it was a cornerstone of their responsibility.
Now this guy from another universe wanted to take it like it was some library book? Who knew if he'd ever bring it back? Ridiculous.
Strange had already heard a lot about the Infinity Stones from Alex Ray. He understood their terrifying power and their origin. There were only six in each universe, each one representing an elemental force of creation. If even one were removed from its home universe, the consequences could be catastrophic.
Even if it didn't cause outright destruction, the disruption alone could alter the course of reality in ways no one could predict. And if that happened… who would be held responsible?
Strange clenched his jaw. If the Eye of Agamotto were under his protection, he'd never give it up.
He silently stepped a few paces back to prepare for anything this madman might try.
Sure enough, the Ancient One refused him coldly: "I'm afraid not."
Dr. Banner, clearly desperate, replied, "I'm sorry… but I didn't come here to ask."
Without waiting, he slowly advanced, reaching for the Eye as though he could just take it by force.
"You will regret this," the Ancient One warned him.
"I already do," Banner said quietly. "But I don't have a choice."
Just as Banner reached forward, Strange's voice rang out from behind him.
"You reckless lunatic—how dare you raise your hand to the Ancient One!"
With a snap of his wrist, Strange struck Banner with a spell. Banner's body went limp as his soul was forcibly expelled. He hovered in spectral form, blinking in shock at his own unconscious body lying on the ground.
"Master," Strange bowed slightly. "I apologize. I didn't expect this version of Banner to be so… impulsive."
He felt guilty—it was technically his fault for bringing this other-universe Banner into the fold. Even though Strange was confident the Ancient One could've handled the situation with ease, he still needed to show his loyalty.
After all, the Ancient One had the power to exile him to some demon dimension if she felt like it. He didn't plan on testing that theory.
The Ancient One didn't comment on Strange's inner panic. She simply looked at him with calm indifference, then turned her gaze back to the soul of the future Banner floating in front of her.
"Let's start from the beginning," she said flatly.
. . . . . . . . . .
Meanwhile, elsewhere—
"No, Tony. There's no one in your apartment right now. Did you get the timeline wrong?" Future Ant-Man had shrunk down to insect size and was standing on Tony Stark's shoulder. His voice was tiny, but clearly audible.
Both he and the future version of Iron Man were crouched on the roof of Stark Tower, peering into Tony's penthouse suite.
"That can't be right," future Tony muttered, frowning. "In this timeline, we should be in there—me, Thor, and the others—surrounding Loki."
His brow furrowed with confusion. "What the hell is going on? Where's the Tesseract?"
Ant-Man scratched his helmet, deep in thought. "Wait… isn't that you flying over there right now?" He pointed off into the clouds, where a streak of red and gold armor tore through the sky in mid-battle.
"Maybe you just haven't gotten to the room yet," Ant-Man offered. "I mean, I didn't even join the Avengers until after the Chitauri invasion."
Tony didn't look reassured. "Okay… but then where's Cap? He should've made his move by now."
"See those guys brawling on the street?" Ant-Man pointed to the ground level. "That's him down there. Next to that pink armored guy—wait, is that a Kamen Rider?"
Tony squinted. His HUD zoomed in. Sure enough, lying near the feet of some pink-armored warrior was none other than Steve Rogers.
Tony's mouth fell open.
"Steve's down? That's impossible. No one's ever hit him like that," he muttered.
"Told you it was him," Ant-Man said proudly. "You don't mistake that ass. There's only one America's ass."
Tony groaned. "This is a mess. This can't be our timeline…"
Just then, his AI—Friday—pinged with a newly decrypted data packet. Tony read through it, and his face immediately darkened. His pupils dilated in disbelief.
"Nick Fury… is dead in this world?" he muttered.
Then he paused again. "Who the hell is Alex Ray? 'Hell's Kitchen landlord?' What the—"
. . . . . . . . . .
Back at the rooftop of the New York Sanctum—
Strange watched silently as the Ancient One walked calmly across the stone tiles, the wind rustling her robes. Beside her, Banner's spectral form hovered helplessly, pleading.
"I'm sorry, Bruce," she said. "But I can't help you."
"Please," future Banner said, his voice full of emotion. "If you don't give it to me, my world will die."
The Ancient One didn't flinch. "And if I do, our reality could collapse."
Strange, still watching from the sidelines, nodded firmly. She was right. If the Time Stone was given away so easily, what would become of their own universe?
No matter how noble someone might be, no one could afford to sacrifice their entire world for another.
Strange couldn't help but admire her conviction. That's how a Sorcerer Supreme should act. No hesitation.
Well done, Ancient One. Strange liked her even more now.
