Chapter 210 : Give me a face
Miguel stared silently at Miles, his expression a mixture of resolve and helplessness. His silence weighed heavily on Miles' heart, as if a boulder were crushing his chest. The air around them grew heavier, dense with despair.
Miguel's message was clear: he expected Miles to accept this cruel truth—his father had to die. It was a torment beyond words, but Miguel believed it was necessary to preserve the stability and balance of the multiverse.
As painful and infuriating as it was, Miles understood Miguel had no alternatives. This was the fate decreed by the laws of the universe.
Miles took a deep breath, forcing himself to stay composed. He knew the only chance left was to try and sway the other Spider-Men.
He turned to Gwen, a flicker of hope in his eyes. Her father had also been a police officer—surely she could understand his pain.
"What about your dad, Gwen? He's a cop too, right?" Miles' voice quivered.
Gwen froze. She hadn't expected him to bring up her father. After a moment's silence, she nodded slowly.
"Yeah… he is," she replied hoarsely.
"And you're okay with this? You're just gonna do whatever they say?" Miles' voice rose with emotion.
Gwen didn't answer. She merely lowered her head, her expression heavy with sorrow. Miles knew what that meant—she'd made the same choice. She had let her father die.
Miles felt the ground fall out from under him. Still, he refused to give up. He looked around at the surrounding Spider-Men, desperate to find someone—anyone—who would side with him.
"Okay, what about Uncle Ben? Huh? You're okay with that?" he shouted at his mentor, Peter. "If you knew it was gonna happen… would you just accept it so easily?"
Peter looked at him, eyes clouded with grief. He sighed deeply and responded, "If it weren't for Uncle Ben, most of us wouldn't even be here, Miles. None of this—everything we do—would exist."
Hearing that, Miles felt a stabbing pain in his chest. He didn't believe Peter would give in so easily. He didn't want to accept it—he couldn't.
"So we're just gonna let people die?" His voice cracked, barely holding together. "Because of some stupid algorithm? That's how the story's supposed to go? That's ridiculous and you know it!"
He tried to appeal to them all, to reason with them. But he didn't realize that more and more Spider-Men were gathering around, listening in silence. Not a single one of them spoke up.
"You can choose," Miguel finally said, his voice calm but heavy. "Save one person… or save the multiverse."
Miles clenched his fists, his eyes blazing. "I can do both!" he shouted. "Spider-Man is supposed to save people! That's what we do! I'm not gonna just give up. I can handle it. I'll take the responsibility. My life doesn't have to be ruled by some code—I make my own story!"
As his words echoed through the crowd, another voice chimed in—Peter, the Buddhist middle-aged version, stepped forward from behind him.
"Not every time," Peter said quietly.
Miles turned sharply, stunned. He hadn't expected even his mentor to side against him.
Miguel placed a hand on Miles' shoulder, his tone gentler now. "Miles, we all want to live our lives. Believe me, I've tried. But the harder I fight it, the more damage I cause. You can't have it both ways, kid."
What he didn't say out loud was the unspoken truth: "Unless you're like Alex Ray."
Miguel kept that part to himself.
Miles's emotions churned inside him. He knew deep down that sacrifices were part of the job—but he couldn't just stand by and watch his father die. He was torn between duty and love, and neither path offered peace.
He glanced around again—more Spider-Men had gathered. None offered their support. They'd all experienced similar heartbreak and made the same sacrifice—for the greater good.
"To be Spider-Man… means to sacrifice," Miguel said. "This is your responsibility."
Miles looked up, his voice firm and defiant. "So what? You gonna fight me now? Teach me a lesson?"
His words cut through the heavy silence like a blade. No one replied.
What hurt most was seeing Gwen, Penny Parker, and Peter—all people he'd fought alongside—now standing in his way.
Their eyes revealed their inner conflict. They didn't want to stop him—but they saw no other option.
Then, just as tension reached its peak, a voice called out from the side, slicing through the pressure like sunlight through storm clouds.
"Yo, is this a morning assembly or something? Why's everyone so serious?"
Miguel's head snapped in the direction of the voice, fury flashing in his eyes. Who had the gall to joke around at a time like this?
"Who said that? Show yourself!" he barked.
But then, his expression froze.
His eyes widened in disbelief. He rubbed them as if trying to clear an illusion.
"You've gotta be kidding me… Alex Ray?!"
Miguel was completely stunned. Of all people, he hadn't expected him to show up—especially not in this universe, and certainly not now.
Even more surprising, Alex wasn't alone. Two individuals in Spider-Man suits followed closely behind him.
Miguel's mind raced. This wasn't supposed to be possible. This dimension could only be accessed with a Dimensional Watch—and while Alex had one, the other two did not.
"How the hell did you get here?" Miguel demanded.
Alex simply smiled. "What, me? I'm just here to make friends. You know, shake some hands, share a few laughs... and maybe give me some face and give this guy a break."
He casually pointed at Miles.
Miguel's brow furrowed. There was no way Gwen or Hobie had given Alex a Dimensional Watch. And yet, there it was—strapped securely to his wrist.
Miguel's voice dropped, suspicious and sharp. "Who gave you that watch?"
Alex just kept smiling, casually ignoring the question.
