Chapter 209 : Do you want me to watch my father die?
Miles noticed that Miguel didn't want to answer his question, so he turned to the other Spider-Men, silently asking whether they, too, had lost someone dear.
The atmosphere grew heavy with sorrow. Peter, lying flat on his back, responded with his gaze fixed on the ceiling: "We've all been through it."
"And me," said Mrs. Spider quietly.
Miles then looked to Hobie Brown—Punk Spider-Man—as if asking whether he had also experienced such a loss.
Feeling Miles' gaze, Hobie replied curtly, "Yeah, what's it to you?" He clearly didn't want to revisit the pain.
"This is how the story is meant to go," Miguel began, his voice low. "These canon events are the threads that connect the fates of all Spider-Men. But once those threads are broken, everything starts to unravel. That's why those extra-dimensional threats are so dangerous."
"Officer Singh's death was supposed to happen," Miguel continued. "You weren't meant to be there. You weren't meant to save him. That's why Gwen tried to stop you, Miles."
Miles instantly understood—Miguel was referring to their visit to Pavitr Prabhakar's world, where Miles had saved Officer Singh from certain death.
At that moment, a holographic screen appeared, displaying the moment when Gwen had pulled Miles away from the danger.
"I thought you were trying to save me," Miles said bitterly, staring at Gwen through the flickering images. He hadn't expected Gwen to stand idly by as people died.
Gwen closed her eyes, unsure how to respond. "I was. I had both reasons," she confessed.
She hadn't just wanted to save Miles—she had also wanted to prevent him from altering a canon event.
Miguel spoke again: "Because of your actions, Pavitr's universe is now on the brink of collapse."
"If we're lucky, we might be able to stop it. But how many times can we rely on luck?" he said, gesturing to the hologram showing a massive black hole expanding in Pavitr's dimension.
Miles watched in horror as Spider-Men from multiple dimensions scrambled to operate machines trying to halt the implosion. If the black hole continued to grow, it would consume everything, erasing Pavitr's entire universe.
"But this isn't my fault—it's Spot! He's the one creating those holes!" Miles protested. In his mind, he had only saved one person; he couldn't understand how that could doom an entire world.
"When you disrupt a canon event, there's a chain reaction," Miguel said, stepping closer to him.
"Then why did a Spider-Man save someone just now and nothing happened? Doesn't that prove it can be done?" Miles asked, thinking he had found a loophole. He had just seen the sheriff from Andrew Garfield's universe alive and well.
"He's an exception, Miles," Miguel said, his voice weary. "That universe has already been severed from the web. It's been detached from the rest of the Spider-Verse. Canon events no longer bind it. Whatever happens there—whatever disruptions occur—they don't affect the rest of us."
"But that came at a cost. None of us—not even you—can replicate that. He's an anomaly."
Miguel was, of course, referring to Alex Ray.
Alex had somehow severed the connections of both Garfield's and Tobey Maguire's universes from the main Spider-Verse web and merged them with his own personal dimension. Miguel still didn't know how Alex had done it.
While the Spider-Men in those worlds had escaped their canon destinies, their fates were now intrinsically tied to Alex. Miguel feared that if something happened to Alex Ray, those entire universes would collapse as well.
This was why Miguel had hesitated for so long. He wasn't sure if he could risk placing the fate of the Spider-Verse on one person's shoulders.
He hadn't even told Alex. He didn't want to burden him with that pressure.
"How do you know all this?" Miles asked, his voice shaking with disbelief.
He still believed he was in the right—that Miguel's theory was just paranoia.
Miguel drew in a deep breath, his voice trembling: "Because I did it too."
His eyes clouded over with memories, taking him back to a different universe.
"In that world, I had a family. I was happy. I had everything I wanted. But the version of me in that world died… he was killed trying to stop a robbery."
Miguel's voice grew heavy. "I replaced him. I stepped into his life, thinking it wouldn't matter. That it wouldn't affect anything. But I was wrong. I destroyed that world."
The screen shifted to show that world in ruins—desolate, lifeless. Only Spider-Man 2099 stood amidst the devastation.
A chill ran down Miles' spine. Fear gnawed at his resolve.
"Right, Peter?" Miguel asked, turning to the middle-aged Peter Parker nearby, as if needing confirmation.
Peter turned away, unable to face the memory. He nodded grimly. "Yes."
"The more you tamper with canon, the more you risk losing. One life saved might mean a thousand lost," Miguel warned.
Miles looked at the shattered spider web on the screen—once intricate and connected, now fractured and hanging by threads. A painful omen.
Then his spider-sense surged—so violently that he staggered, clutching his head in pain.
He saw flashes. The Spot. His father. The building collapsing. His father shielding a child, only to be crushed.
"It's Spot! He killed my dad!" Miles shouted in anguish.
His voice cracked with despair. He hadn't thought he would lose his father like the other Spider-Men.
Silence fell. None of the Spider-Men spoke. They knew. They all knew what was coming.
No one wanted to be the one to say it out loud.
"When?" Miles asked, barely able to breathe. "When is it going to happen?"
Miguel answered coldly. "Two days from now. On the day he's sworn in."
The words hit Miles like a freight train. His heart sank.
"Send me back!" he demanded, desperation in his voice.
"I can't. Not now," Miguel said. If Miles returned now, he would try to save his father—another disruption, another universe at risk.
"Then what do you want me to do? Just stand by and watch my father die?!" Miles roared.
