Chapter 208 : Being Spider-Man requires a bit of humor!
"Miles!"
"Dude!"
Miles rushed forward and hugged the disheveled Peter tightly. He hadn't seen his mentor in a long time.
Ever since the last Kingpin collider accident, Miles had thought he would never see this version of Peter again.
He never expected to meet him here, and certainly didn't expect that this lazy, older Peter had joined the Spider-Society base.
"You don't need to be afraid of my friend Miguel. He just looks scary—he won't bite," Peter said, patting Miles on the shoulder to comfort him.
Then the two got distracted discussing Peter's child, Mayday. Peter even pulled out his phone to show Miles a picture of her. Clearly, they had momentarily forgotten they were in the middle of something serious.
Miguel O'Hara, also known as Spider-Man 2099, silently watched Peter and Miles joke around.
"I can't take this anymore. Seriously," Miguel muttered.
"We're discussing something important," he added, ignoring Mayday crawling all over him.
"You're the only Spider-Man without a sense of humor," Peter complained.
"Being Spider-Man requires humor!"
"What about the fate of the multiverse?" Miguel didn't even glance at Peter as he spoke, voice sharp with frustration.
"Every time you bring that up, my brain shuts down. I mean, isn't there someone who saved Peter across the universes? I remember his name… Alex Ray. Why can he do it, but not Miles?" Peter asked, his tone light, distracted as he played with his daughter.
It was obvious he didn't want to discuss the multiversal consequences.
Miguel, however, had no idea how to deal with this old friend.
"You disrupted canon events," Miguel said with a resigned but serious tone, eyes locked on Miles with deep concern.
"Canon events? Wait—I saved those people. Why are you mad?" Miles asked, completely stunned. He couldn't understand what he had done wrong. Was saving people supposed to be a mistake?
He looked to Miguel for answers, utterly confused.
"That's exactly the problem," Miguel said with a heavy breath, his voice growing solemn.
"Lyla, show him what he needs to see." At Miguel's command, the entire room transformed instantly.
It was as if some mysterious force engulfed them. Their surroundings shifted into a vast virtual space.
Miles stared in amazement, feeling as though he had stepped into an entirely new world.
Before him appeared a massive image—an immense tree-like structure with sprawling branches and deep roots.
Then, countless orange threads of light materialized around them, weaving together into a sprawling, intricate spider web that filled the space.
Miles watched, bewildered. He didn't understand what any of it meant.
Miguel noticed his confusion and began explaining. "These represent every official Spider-Man across the multiverse."
He pointed to the glowing strands. "Our lives are intertwined in this beautiful web of destiny."
Miles couldn't help but feel a wave of shock. So these glowing threads represented the lives and fates of other Spider-Men—and he was now one of them.
"Spider-Man multiverse?" he asked aloud, eyes wide.
"'Spider-Verse' is a dumb name," Miguel muttered. "It should be the Spider-Man Multiverse. But even that doesn't sound great."
Miles didn't care about the semantics. He was far more focused on what these threads actually meant.
"And these threads form nodes," Miguel continued. "Those are canon events. They mark key storylines in every Spider-Man's life—some good, some tragic."
Miles felt his heart grow heavy.
He realized how important these canon events were—each one was a permanent fixture, carrying emotional weight and defining each Spider-Man's story.
"Some things must never be changed," Miguel said, his tone turning fierce.
He manipulated the virtual space, and suddenly, Miles saw countless Spider-Men, each kneeling to bid their final goodbyes to family or loved ones.
Their eyes brimmed with grief and unwillingness—as if the entire world were collapsing around them.
In the vision, Miles saw himself and his uncle Aaron—the Prowler. They, too, were saying their last goodbye.
"Uncle Aaron…" Miles murmured, his voice soft, eyes damp with sadness.
Miguel didn't acknowledge Miles' grief, instead walking toward a virtual screen displaying a different image. "This is the Amazing Spider-Man 90 incident. In that timeline, a police officer with deep ties to Spider-Man died saving a child during a battle with a villain."
Miles watched as Spider-Man cradled the dying officer, weeping.
Pain welled up in Miles' heart. He realized that loss and sacrifice were inescapable parts of the Spider-Man experience.
Suddenly, he noticed the name: George Stacy.
That was Gwen's father.
He turned to look at Gwen. Her eyes were filled with tears, her expression heavy with sorrow.
Miles' heart sank further as the simulation played on. One by one, different versions of Spider-Man experienced the same tragedy—holding a dying George Stacy and saying goodbye.
Then came a different scene.
In this one, the Spider-Man shown was the version played by Andrew Garfield.
At first, he too held the dying officer.
But then—another Spider-Man appeared.
And this one intervened. He saved George Stacy.
Miles watched in shock and confusion.
He pointed at the two figures on the screen. "Wait—is that supposed to be a canon event? How did that Spider-Man save him?"
Miguel's eyes darkened. For a moment, he didn't answer.
Because he recognized what had happened.
That was Alex Ray's apprentice—the Tobey Maguire version of Peter Parker. Alex Ray had intervened, indirectly changing the course of history.
"He's just… an exception," Miguel replied, the frustration in his voice unmistakable.
