Chapter 12: Prologue -12.

General Wu's face hardened. "Enough of this." He drew his sword, the sound sharp and final. "You say the demons have surrendered? Prove it. Or I'll cut you down right here."

The demon's grin remained, unshaken. "Oh, my dear General, you think I need to 'prove' anything to you? The truth is already in front of your eyes. Look around you—where are the other demon lords? Where is the Dread Sovereign's wrath? If we wanted you dead, you would be dead by now." It stepped forward, chains rattling, eyes narrowing as it leaned closer to the General. "But you're alive. 'We've surrendered.'"

The soldiers murmured, doubt creeping into their voices. General Wu glanced at the battlefield, his anger tempered by a growing sense of unease. Could it be true? Had they already won?

Before he could speak, the demon chuckled again, this time softer, more sinister. "But victory comes at a price, General. A very 'human' price. And the more you indulge in this... madness," it gestured again at the depraved carnage, "the closer you come to losing everything you've fought for. 'My master' has seen it before—humans becoming monsters to defeat monsters. It never ends well."

General Wu's sword lowered slightly, his mind racing. Was this all part of some demonic trick? Or was there a bitter truth to the demon's words?

"Your move, General," the demon rasped, voice dripping with mock sweetness. "What will it be? Will you keep pretending you're a hero, or will you finally listen to reason? My master... 'ohhh' he's waiting, ever so patiently." It tilted its head, grinning wildly. "But, not for long."

The old man remained silent, his gnarled figure watching the scene unfold like a silent observer of a play he had seen too many times before. His presence, though quiet, carried a weight that pressed down on the battlefield, and the soldiers felt it, a growing sense that this wasn't just another battle to be won or lost.

General Wu glared at the demon, frustration burning in his eyes. "What do you want from us?"

The demon raised a brow, amused. "Oh, it's not about what 'we' want, General. It's about what 'you' stand to lose. Your humanity, your soul—call it what you will. But continue down this path, and you'll find that in your quest to destroy us, you've destroyed yourselves." It chuckled darkly, chains clinking as it slithered back toward its master. "Now, if you're done threatening me with your shiny sword, I suggest you start making decisions that don't end in extinction."

General Wu's grip tightened on his sword, but he did not raise it again. The soldiers stood still, uncertain, their lust for revenge dimming under the weight of the demon's words. Silence spread across the battlefield as the stench of piss, filth, death and rage felt like shame, thicker than before.

General Wu stood, his knuckles white as his sword quivered in his grip. The demon's words echoed in his mind, gnawing at him. He knew there was truth in them. His gaze swept across the battlefield, seeing his men—no, not 'men', but beasts in human skin, consumed by bloodlust and hatred. They weren't warriors anymore; they were monsters, drunk on vengeance.

With a sharp breath, Wu snapped his sword back into its sheath. His jaw clenched as the soldiers around him looked at him, confused, still soaked in their frenzy.

"BACK TO THE LINE!" General Wu's voice thundered, cutting through the chaos like a storm. His words boomed with authority, with anger. "I SAID, BACK TO YOUR DAMNED LINES, NOW!" He stomped forward, grabbing one soldier by the collar and yanking him back, shoving him toward the formation. "You—YES, YOU! Get the hell back in line before I break your necks myself!"

The soldiers hesitated, exchanging uneasy glances. Some backed off, but others, emboldened by their bloodthirst, resisted.

Commander Jin staggered forward, face twisted in rage. "What the hell are you doing, General? This is our chance to wipe them out! They deserve it after everything they've done—look at what they did to our brothers!"

The men muttered in agreement, their faces hard with anger and grief. "They burned our homes!" one soldier spat. "They butchered our families!" another added. The tide of resentment swelled, rising against the General's authority.

Commander Jin limped forward, still clutching his side, his eyes wild with fury. "General, we've already killed three of the Demon Lords! You said yourself we'd wipe them all out! This is revenge—this is justice!"

General Wu's eyes blazed, his chest heaving with rage. "Justice?" He marched up to Jin, glaring directly into his eyes. "You call this justice? This disgusting display? Look around you!" He threw his hand toward the battlefield, where soldiers stood over demon corpses, some still defiling the dead. "What you're doing isn't justice! This is savagery! You've lost control, Jin, and you've dragged these men down with you!"

Jin gritted his teeth, his defiance burning hot. "We're just doing what needs to be done! Don't tell me you don't want them all dead, too!"

General Wu's patience finally snapped. His voice boomed over the battlefield like a cannon blast, loud and raw, aimed at every soldier in earshot.

"YOU LOT—BACK TO YOUR LINES! NOW!" He drew its sword again and flashed as he pointed it at the soldiers wallowing in the filth. "You think this is what soldiers do? You think we piss on corpses like dogs in the street? YOU THINK YOU'RE BLOODY THUGS, HUH? WELL, GUESS WHAT? YOU'RE NOT!" His eyes were blazing, his face flushed with fury. "You're soldiers! Warriors! If you want to act like animals, I'll PERSONALLY throw every one of you into a pit and let you rot!"

Commander Jin staggered forward, his face twisted in defiance. "General, we've earned this! You can't—"

"SHUT YOUR DAMN MOUTH, JIN!" Wu's voice was thunderous. "You think you're the only one who's suffered? We've all lost brothers, friends—people we loved! But that doesn't give you the right to turn this army into a pack of bloody animals!" His glare swept across the field. "ALL OF YOU—LOOK AT YOURSELVES! LOOK AT WHAT YOU'VE BECOME!" He spat on the ground, disgusted. "You're pissing on the dead, defiling corpses like some gutter rats! THIS ISN'T WHAT WE FOUGHT FOR!"
