Chapter 13: Prologue -13.
The soldiers flinched, many of them dropping their weapons, ashamed. General Wu wasn't finished.
General Wu's face twisted with fury as he jabbed a finger into Jin's chest. "LISTEN TO ME, YOU DAMN FOOL!" His voice exploded, loud enough to make the nearest soldiers flinch. "I 'DO' want them dead, but I will NOT have my men turn into the same filth we're trying to wipe out! You think this makes you a hero? You think pissing on a demon corpse makes you a soldier?!" He whipped around, his voice now booming across the battlefield.
"You're not heroes anymore—you're street thugs!" His voice rang out, hammering through the heads of every soldier who had strayed from their discipline. "Look at yourselves! LOOK AT YOURSELVES! Is this what you joined the army for? To become worse than the demons? To act like gangsters? Like filthy, lowlife criminals?! You call this a victory? YOU THINK THIS MAKES YOU MEN?!"
The soldiers began to shift uncomfortably, the weight of his words sinking in. Some lowered their heads in shame.
"WHAT ARE WE?!" General Wu's voice rose again, filled with an overbearing fury. "We're not murderers, we're not rapists, we're not rabid dogs on the street!" He marched up to another soldier, his eyes blazing. "We are soldiers! SOLDIERS! We fight with honor, with discipline! We do NOT stoop to the level of monsters & demons!"
A wave of guilt began to ripple through the men. The depraved haze that had clouded their minds started to break under the sheer force of Wu's wrath.
"If any of you think you can keep acting like this, think again!" Wu barked, his voice colder now. "I'll have you all dragged through the mud! I'll make sure you're scrubbing latrines for the rest of your miserable lives! I'll strip your ranks, I'll make sure you're discharged with nothing but dishonor to your name!"
The soldiers began to retreat, stepping back toward their lines, shamefaced. Even Commander Jin, his anger fading under the sheer force of the General's words, took a hesitant step back.
"We are an ARMY!" General Wu bellowed, his voice shaking the very air. "We stand for something greater than bloodshed! We stand for humanity! For honor! For justice! But THIS—this is NOT how we do it!"
His eyes swept over them all, drilling into each and every one of them. "If any of you are still men—if you still have a shred of honor left in your bones—you'll get back in line. You'll remember why you became soldiers in the first place. Or I'll break every last one of you down and rebuild you from the dirt! I swear it, I have done it already and I can do it again."
The soldiers finally began to fall back, forming lines once more, their heads low, their faces pale with the realization of their actions. The bloodlust had drained from their eyes, replaced by shame and guilt. Even Commander Jin, his defiance shattered, returned to his place, unable to meet the General's gaze.
General Wu stood tall, his chest rising and falling as the weight of command settled over him once more. His glare burned into the backs of his men, his voice cutting through the silence like a blade.
"We are not monsters," he growled. "We're better than this."
General Wu's sharp, commanding barks echoed across the battlefield, snapping the soldiers back into formation. His usual military instructor attitude, honed from years of training these men since childhood, returned with full force. For these soldiers, Wu wasn't just their commander—he was their father and mentor, the one who had molded them into warriors.
As his orders cut through the chaos, memories of their training under him resurfaced, and the discipline he had instilled in them took hold once more. Wu allowed himself a brief moment to breathe, feeling the weight of command heavier than usual.
But as General Wu's eyes scanned the battlefield, his sense of peace was abruptly interrupted.
"I won't stand for this!" Commander Jin's voice, raw with pain and twisted by hatred. His once-proud stance had crumbled, his face a pale mask of desperation. His eyes burned with madness as he pointed a trembling finger at General Wu. "You… YOU'RE IN LEAGUE WITH THEM!"
The accusation struck like a slap, and the soldiers stirred, their heads turning toward Jin in disbelief.
"What did you just say?" General Wu's voice was low, dangerous.
"You heard me!" Jin's voice was wild, barely holding together. "This whole time… you've been working with the demons! You and... that Demon Keeper!" He jabbed his accusatory finger at the old man in rags, standing next to his chained demon who was on its all fours limbs, grinning as if enjoying Jin's breakdown. "This is all a lie! A TRICK! You're turning us against our real mission! You're protecting them, aren't you?!" His voice broke, hoarse with rage and desperation.
The soldiers glanced at each other uneasily. None of them believed Jin's wild accusation. His face, once proud and strong, was now contorted with guilt, exhaustion, and raw, unchecked rage. His words made no sense, and it was clear to everyone that he had lost his grip on reality.
A soldier beside Jin, wide-eyed, reached out to steady him with a hand on his shoulder. "Commander, you're not making sense—"
"STAY BACK!" Jin roared, shoving the soldier away. His eyes darted wildly between Wu and the men around him, his entire body trembling. "None of you see it! Wu's protecting them!" His voice became more frantic with every word. "You think we've won? This is their plan! He's been in on it from the start!"
The soldiers shifted uneasily, glancing nervously between Jin and General Wu. No one spoke. Some averted their eyes, uncertain how to react to their commander's mad ravings.
Wu kept his gaze fixed on Jin. Taking a slow step forward, his voice was firm. "You're delirious, Jin. You are in pain, you are Injured. You forgot about our history, everyone knows here that we've fought beside each other. We have saved each other's lives many times, I have followed your plans to the letter many times and have achieved many victories together. There's no conspiracy here."
