Chapter 23: Ghosts of the Past
Sunny had surprisingly woken up in time to open the cafe after the night before. Morgan had already left, but his room was still a mess.
Sunny spent the first part of the morning disposing of the ruins strewn about his room and letting Mimic heal itself. Then he moved to the kitchen and started preparing the ingredients just in time for his first customer to arrive.
There were a lot of comments on his obsidian wedding ring, but he simply said that having an exorbitantly jewelled ring would be painful for his wife as she had to fight with it on.
Somehow, he managed to avoid the follow-up questions, successfully keeping his marriage partner a secret.
Eventually, as the day came to a close and he cleared the last table, two familiar faces walked through the door. He looked up with a smile, "I've been waiting for you."
The people in question were of course Cassie and Nephis, he had dropped hints to them during the ceremony so they would come see him afterwards. Nephis simply furrowed her brow, but Cassie stepped forwards to speak.
"Solvane, do you know her?" Cassie was straightforward. He had been too, he had purposely ordered Serpent to assume the form of the late priestess of war after all.
"The Shadow Clan's relationship with her is more than just knowing." Sunny had no doubt that Cassie had realised Serpent was an echo, and already knew of its abilities.
"One of you killed her." Sunny nodded, Cassie paused, drawing conclusions at a rapid pace.
"I assume you've connected the dots, but don't ask me because you won't remember my answer." Of course he was talking about his disconnection from fate. Cassie was the person he trusted would find out the most.
She didn't talk for a long time. "So you're nobody." Sunny didn't speak, but his silence was enough of an answer.
Despite his lack of existence in the current world, Sunny had left enough breadcrumbs in the form of lost memories and discrepancies in his identity. He had also written an exploration report under the pseudonym 'nobody', a place nobody except the cohort and mordret should know about.
Nephis didn't seem to be paying much attention to the conversation they were having, simply staring at him with furrowed brows. It was getting slightly uncomfortable.
"Are you alright?" He ended up asking her, as she was acting strangely enough for even him to be unaware of her feelings. He almost thought he could see jealousy written on her features, but there was no way that was possible.
"Why did you marry my sister?" Sunny was dumbfounded. It couldn't be, was she actually jealous? Her tone suggested she was incredulous that Morgan had married him, or at least a man like him.
"Because it was convenient. I'm sorry, I'm not entirely sure what you're asking." Nephis stared at him some more but seemed to begrudgingly accept that answer.
"It's nothing, don't worry about it." Sunny was somewhat amused by her antics, but was equally confused. If he didn't know any better, he would've thought that Nephis wanted to steal him from her sister.
'No, it can't be.' Sunny didn't know what to think about the situation, so he simply pushed it to the back of his mind and turned back to Cassie.
Cassie was looking at Nephis with a perplexed expression, but Nephis simply ignored her so she went to continue talking to Sunny.
He spoke before she could, "We are not an enemy. We are willing to help take down the sovereigns and crown one of your own." As he said the last part, he glanced at Nephis.
Of course, his words weren't anything to go by, but his knowledge of their cause was enough for them to have to trust him. After all, there was supposedly a whole clan behind him, they couldn't just eliminate him, and so, he held the absolute advantage.
Cassie was now also furrowing her brow, but she relented. "We hope to see you carry through with your promise." She turned around to leave, but Nephis lingered momentarily.
"You don't have to stay with h- No. Be careful of the third ghoul." She seemed to want to say something else, but stopped herself. Instead speaking of Asterion and his strange obsession with divine lineages.
"We know, we will deal with it when it comes." Nephis didn't waste any more time, she turned around and followed Cassie out. The only evidence that they had been there was the memories in Sunny's head.
The two women hadn't left any means of contact, so he assumed they'd find a way to properly discuss with him, or the Shadow Clan in due time.
For now, he had other things to worry about. Mainly, his date with Morgan. Before she left, she had told him to meet her the next day at a restaurant she had picked out.
There was only one problem. Sunny didn't have any nice clothes. He had previously had one set of clothes that were somewhat formal, but he had worn them to his wedding and hadn't been able to change out of them before encountering Morgan.
It was suffice to say that he no longer would be able to wear it in a way that would keep his dignity intact. He was in urgent need of something to wear, that was why he had to quickly rush out now to buy something.
Sunny quickly finished what he was doing and grabbed his wallet. The true extent of his wealth was far beyond what was contained in his wallet, but his stash of soul cores would attract suspicion if he were to exchange even some of it.
The money he had on hand was what he had earned from the cafe and memory businesses after deducting Aiko's salary.
'I can already tell this is going to hurt' He looked at his wealth with pain in his eyes, knowing it was going to be a while before he could see that much again.
