Chapter 45: The Inheritance Case
Marriott Hotel.
When the two arrived at the hotel, Daisy wanted to book a two-bedroom suite, but Luke felt it wasn't necessary.
In his opinion, having the bedrooms far apart wasn't convenient for protecting Daisy in case of danger.
Daisy thought it made sense and booked a one-bedroom suite instead, with the living room closer to the bedroom so that Luke could detect any intruders immediately.
Luke "..."
Isn't a double room fine?
Isn't a king-size bed luxurious?
Luke wasn't bluffing; Daisy was a lawyer, not some big-breasted bimbo without brains.
Luke sat on the sofa, which is where he could only sleep tonight. The quality of the sofa was good, so at least he didn't have to worry about insomnia.
Daisy took off her coat, revealing her more pronounced curves, "Luke, thank you for being by my side. Without you... I don't know what would have happened.
I might have been under surveillance without realizing it, and the thought terrifies me... I have no idea who would do something like this. It's too scary."
"Relax, I'll protect you. My colleagues are investigating, and I'm sure we'll have some leads soon," Luke said, giving her a hug that was soft and comfortable.
"Will you join me for a drink?" Daisy extricated herself from Luke's 'clutches,' took a bottle of red wine and two wine glasses from the cabinet, and poured each of them a glass.
"To you," Daisy said, raising her glass.
"Cheers," Luke touched his glass to hers, only sipping a little bit when Daisy already downed hers.
"Whoa... slow down. We've got a long night ahead, and I've got to stay up on watch. Can't drink too much."
Daisy poured herself another glass, "I just want to forget about tonight as soon as possible. Someone sneaking into my house to install surveillance feels even more terrifying than being robbed on the street."
Luke took the opportunity to ask, "Do you have anyone in mind you suspect?"
"After our last discussion, I thought about a lot of possibilities. My life is basically work, home, and the occasional drink at a bar.
I don't have any personal vendettas, so as you suggested before, it's very likely related to my job," Daisy replied.
"Can you talk about the cases you are handling?"
"Well, not in principle... But I'll just tell you, can you help me analyze it?"
Luke smiled, "Of course."
"I'm currently handling three cases, two divorce cases and one will case. Which would you like to hear about first?"
Luke responded with a question, "Which case do you think is more likely related to today's events?"
"The will case."
"OK, let's start with that one then."
"A year ago, I took on a will case, where the client had distributed their estate according to their wishes. There are two forms of the will, a written will, which I keep.
There's also a video will, in which the client recorded a video bequeathing the estate, as a way to say goodbye to friends and family.
Recently, the client was hospitalized for emergency care and is currently in a coma.
The family found the video will in the safe and played its contents."
"I suspect someone might want to steal the written will from me."
Luke, puzzled, asked, "If they have already seen the video and know the content of the will, why would they want to steal the written one you have?"
"California doesn't recognize oral or video wills. A will must be in written form to be valid, explicitly stating how the estate is to be distributed, with the date noted, and it must be signed by the person making the will.
If the will is written by the person themself, it's called a 'holographic will,' and it doesn't even need a witness.
The one I have is a holographic will."
Luke pressed on, "What would happen if the will in your possession were stolen or damaged?"
"Then the video will would be invalid, and if the client dies, the estate would be inherited according to California law."
"How much is the estate worth?"
"At least several million US dollars."
"Wow, it's certainly tempting. It looks like the will you're holding affects many people's interests."
"Yeah, it was after your reminder that I thought it might relate to this will case."
Leveraging the moment for analysis, Luke said, "If someone really did want to steal the will, they broke into your office on March 2nd but didn't find it. On March 3rd, Tim attacked you with a Taser, trying to take your belongings, but he failed.
Today, someone broke into your home and installed surveillance in the study, hoping to steal the safe's password.
The logic seems to fit."
"I never expected such a simple will execution to bring so much trouble. If it weren't for you, I don't know what I would've done."
"I'll always be here with you," Luke said as he grasped Daisy's soft left hand with his right.
Under the influence of alcohol, the two moved closer and closer, until Luke, unable to help himself, pulled the beautiful woman into his embrace.
Daisy had a voluptuous figure and bore a faint fragrance. Her beautiful face and sexy red lips were very enticing.
With his left hand, Luke caressed Daisy's cheek and leaned in to kiss her red lips.
Daisy was initially stunned, her body somewhat rigid, but as Luke's passionate kiss continued, she gradually relaxed…
The atmosphere heated up as the passionate kissing became more intimate.
"Buzz…"
The vibrating phone interrupted Luke's further advances.
Daisy snapped back to reality, leaning back slightly with blushing cheeks, "Sorry… I need to take this call."
Standing up to answer the call, Luke picked up his wine glass and took a sip. Damn phone—he would definitely turn it off next time.
After a while, Daisy finished the call, "It was the client's call."
"The one for the will execution."
"I wish I could receive a call from the will's executor, but he's still in a coma. It was the divorce case client."
Luke walked over to Daisy and wrapped his arms around her waist, "It's really late now, stop thinking about work."
Leaning in for a kiss, Daisy pressed her finger against Luke's lips, "You're right, it's late. I need to rest. There's a lot to do tomorrow."
"Do you want me to stay with you?"
"No, not tonight. The matter with the camera scared me. Can you give me some time?"
Disappointed, Luke asked, "Where does that divorce case client live?"
"Why do you ask?"
"I'm thinking of beating him up."
Daisy laughed softly and kissed Luke's cheek, "Good night."
Smiling, Luke said, "If you get scared alone, you can call me anytime."
"Have sweet dreams," Daisy turned and entered the bedroom.
Draining the glass of wine from the coffee table, Luke reflected that although they hadn't completely bridged the gap, there was definite progress in their relationship.
Luke casually lay back on the leather sofa, which was quite elastic and felt comfortable.
Sleeping on the sofa didn't bother Luke at all. If he hadn't come to the hotel, he'd likely have spent the entire night on a case, which was already luckier than his colleagues.
"Achoo…" Luke sneezed. Who could be thinking of me?
Mom? Or the chubby kid?
Only then did Luke remember he hadn't checked in with his mom.
Pulling out his phone, Luke sent his mother a text, "Mom, I'm not coming home tonight."
"Have you found a new place to live?"
"No, I love you guys. I wouldn't move out."
"Then get back here right now."
"I'm on a mission today."
"You didn't look like you were on a mission this afternoon. Do you think I'm easy to fool?"
"I swear to God, there's an emergency task at the squad."
"Shut up! You don't even believe in God. Are you with a woman?"
"No."
"That lawyer girlfriend?"
"I said no."
"We will, we will, rock you..." A ringtone blared as Mom initiated a video call.
Luke disconnected.
His mom sent another message, "I just knew it."
Throwing his phone aside, Luke didn't bother to respond any further.
