Chapter 46 Lorne
The next morning.
Luke and Daisy entered the Robbery and Murder Department office together, inevitably drawing sidelong glances from their colleagues.
"Guys, good morning," Luke greeted them, in order to spare Daisy any embarrassment, he prepared to take her to the break room.
Upon arriving at the door of the break room and seeing shadows moving inside, he asked, "Who's in there?"
Jenny sighed, "Steven's mother came from out of town, and the captain is receiving her."
"OK," Luke led Daisy into the conference room.
"Have a seat here, I'll get you a glass of water," Luke patted her shoulder and left the conference room.
Marcus complained with dissatisfaction, "You're just too wicked, we've been up all night working on cases while you're out having a grand time."
"What are you talking about? My task last night was to protect Daisy."
Marcus, holding a cup, walked over and nudged Luke with his shoulder, "Come on, be honest, did you get in any 'exercise'?"
Luke looked helpless, "I was working too."
Marcus grinned, "Any conflicts there? You can work and 'exercise' together, right?"
Jenny made a face, "Hey, Marcus, your expression is truly disgusting. Even if Luke likes Daisy, it's not right to… what's the difference between that and taking advantage of someone?"
The deputy said, "I agree with Jenny's words, Marcus, show a little humanity."
Marcus spread his hands, "Why are you all ganging up on me?"
"Show a little humanity," Luke dropped the remark and carried the water back into the conference room.
Daisy asked curiously, "What were you all talking about outside?"
"They said you're pretty and complimented my good taste."
"Did you tell them about us?"
"I haven't said anything. But remember, this is the Detective Bureau, and they are the finest officers in Los Angeles…"
Daisy nodded with a touch of resignation.
"Creak…"
The conference room door opened, and Susan walked in from outside.
"Miss Daisy, I apologize for the wait," she said.
Daisy stood up, "Captain Susan, thank you for arriving so promptly last night."
"No need for formalities, it's my duty. Please, take a seat," Susan gestured for her to sit and said in a serious manner,
"I'll first inform you about yesterday's inspection, the technicians found a camera in your study, but no other surveillance or wiretapping devices, and we've also collected biological traces, so you can go home today."
"Thank you."
"Furthermore, judging from the angle of the camera, it was aimed directly at your safe. Was there anything valuable in there?"
"Some jewelry and documents."
"Do you suspect anyone of installing the surveillance?"
Daisy glanced at Luke, saw him give a slight nod, and said, "I suspect the installation of the surveillance in my home is likely related to the robbery on March 2nd."
"Do you think the previous robbery was not accidental and there were other reasons?"
"Yes."
"Is there any basis for that?"
"On March 2nd, there was an illegal break-in at my law firm's office, followed by the robbery, and then the installation of the surveillance yesterday. All these incidents happened to me within less than half a month; I can't explain it as mere coincidence."
"Have similar incidents occurred before?"
"No."
"Have you offended anyone recently, or gained possession of some valuable items that might have attracted attention?"
"I'm a lawyer, currently processing a will case, and I suspect it might be related to this case," Daisy recounted the conversation she had with Luke the night before.
After listening, Susan nodded, "Considering the interests involved, the client's family members do have a motive for the crime. Can you disclose the name of the testator and the specific content of the will?"
Daisy looked a bit uncomfortable, "Captain Susan, I'm personally willing to assist your department's work, and I can provide the client's name. However, due to professional reasons, I cannot disclose the contents of the will at the moment. I truly apologize."
"No, no, no, I understand, I would make the same decision myself," Susan, who was very much about rules and regulations, found no issue with Daisy's stance.
"You provide the client's information, and the police will investigate the related situations themselves. As long as there's evidence showing your experience is related to the will case, we'll apply for the necessary procedures to review the content of the will."
"Captain Susan, thank you for your understanding."
Daisy provided the identity of the testator, while Luke took notes on the side.
Half an hour later, Daisy left the Robbery and Murder Department.
Luke saw her off to her car, "What are your plans for today?"
"First, I'll deal with some work at the law firm. In the afternoon I'm getting cleaners to tidy up; it'll make me feel more at ease."
"OK, call me if you need anything."
Daisy tilted her head slightly, revealing a hint of a smile, "Can I call even if there's no issue?"
Luke bent down to kiss her cheek, "You can call anytime."
After watching Daisy leave, Luke was about to go upstairs when his phone started ringing.
"Ding-a-ling-a-ling..."
Luke pressed the answer button, "Wow, boss Paul, didn't expect to get a call from you."
"Officer Luke, I'm honored that you kept my number."
"What's up?"
"I just wanted to ask about Alyssa's case, she's an employee of my club, and I hope she can safely return to this big family."
"You're a good boss."
"How's Alyssa doing? Any leads?"
"Last Saturday, we successfully rescued Alyssa, and she's doing quite well now."
"Wow, you're amazing, I applaud the Detective Bureau, at least it lets me know the club's taxes aren't paid in vain."
"Is that a compliment?"
"Of course, from the bottom of my heart. Now that Alyssa is fine, I'm relieved. She's a great employee, and I hope she can come back to work." After saying this, Paul asked further, "Was the culprit Harry?"
"No, I can't reveal too much about the case at the moment."
"I understand, won't disturb your work now, drop by the club when you have time."
"For free?"
"Do you want to see me dance?"
"No."
"Then I wish you a happy spending in advance, I'll instruct the waiter to give you a 20% discount on drinks."
Luke hung up the phone, "What a terrifying guy."
...
Back at the office.
Susan gathered everyone in the conference room for a meeting.
"Everyone's here, let's start the meeting."
Susan glanced around the meeting room and continued, "Steven's mother has left, and she hopes the police can help find Steven."
The deputy chief said, "I think Dave might have offed Steven already, probably buried in the Gobi."
Susan countered, "Do you have evidence?"
"If I had evidence, I wouldn't be sitting here." The deputy chief shrugged his shoulders, "And Tony, I think he's been offed by Dave too."
"Deputy Chief, you'll be in charge of the search for Steven and Tony," Susan cut him off, looking at Luke on the side,
"You introduce Daisy's case."
"On the night of March 3, Daisy was robbed, and I caught the suspect Tim on the spot. At the time, Tim claimed he was imitating the 'Stun Gun Robbery' and Daisy was his impromptu target.
In fact, it may not be so, as someone broke into Daisy's law firm office on March 2, plus the installment of surveillance last night, they are all likely connected.
Currently, Daisy is dealing with a will case, and she suspects that all three incidents may be related to it."
Afterward, Luke introduced the will case, putting a document on the projector,
Client information.
Name, Lorne Bull
Date of birth, May 12, 1970
Phone number, 626 876 3178.
Address, 102 Joen Street
The deputy chief speculated, "Since there's a written will, why bother with a video will? It's useless, only brings trouble."
Jenny, on the other hand, could understand, "He might have wanted to say goodbye to his family in person."
The deputy chief sneered, somewhat skeptical, "Has Daisy seen that video will?"
Luke shook his head, "She only knows of the video will, but she hasn't seen the content, it's for the will-maker to say goodbye to the family."
Susan said, "The key to this case isn't the written will; Daisy is tight-lipped about the contents of the will and hasn't disclosed anything to the police, let alone to the client's family.
If someone is dissatisfied with the inheritance distribution, they might have seen the distribution plan in the video.
The real trigger here is actually the video will."
"I agree with the chief's analysis," Luke nodded, it's always good to flatter the boss when appropriate, that's how one gets opportunities for advancement.
