Chapter 44: Detection Card
Luke didn't immediately enter the house.
He took out his phone to contact Susan and informed her of the situation at the scene. The call wasn't for backup but to report in.
If there really were criminals in the house and a gunfight broke out, having reported in advance could save a lot of unnecessary trouble.
Susan agreed to his going inside to have a look, cautioned him to be careful, and to call for support immediately if anything happened.
At the same time, she unusually approved his overtime.
Luke took out his pistol and admonished, "Daisy, I'm going in to check the house, you wait outside.
If you hear a gunshot, dial 911 and then contact Captain Susan."
Once 911 is dialed, the operator would arrange for nearby patrol officers to provide support as soon as possible.
Daisy asked with concern, "Will there be any danger?"
"Just as a precaution."
Leaving aside the question of whether someone really had broken in, even if someone had, they most likely would have fled by now and wouldn't be waiting to be caught.
Luke opened the door and quietly entered the house, carefully searching the living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, study, and so on.
After searching inside and outside the house and not finding any sign of others, he safely put his gun away.
Not only were there no signs of others, but the house was also very tidy. Aside from some commonly used women's items, he found no signs of intrusion or disturbance.
"Luke, can I come in now?"
"It's safe, come in."
Daisy entered the living room and asked cautiously, "Did you find any signs of a break-in?"
"No, check if there are any signs that something has been stolen, like some valuables or important documents."
"I'll check now." As a lawyer, Daisy was very clear about the situation. If she couldn't find any trace of unlawful entry, not only would she not be able to file a case, but she might even be considered delusional.
Luke might trust her once, twice, but a third time?
While Daisy was checking the items in the house, Luke was not idle. He remembered he had a 'Detection Card' he hadn't used yet, which he had obtained from the system lottery during the last time he rescued Daisy.
He still hadn't figured out the specific function, but from the name, it seemed suitable for the current situation.
Luke checked the Detective System, subconsciously thinking of using the 'Detection Card'.
A 3D model appeared in his mind, its structure similar to Daisy's house, with a red dot in the front left position. Luke followed the direction of the red dot, which was precisely where Daisy's study was located.
At the moment, Daisy was also in the study, bending over to check items, with her round peach buttocks facing the door.
Hearing movement, Daisy stood up and said, "I've checked, and there are no valuables missing."
Luke took his eyes off Daisy and looked at the safe beside her, "Are the valuables hidden in the safe?"
"Yes."
"Has the safe been opened?"
"Impossible. This is a safe I bought for five thousand US dollars. It's reinforced with thick steel and is waterproof, fireproof, and burglary-resistant. It can't be opened without the code."
Luke closed the door, "Daisy, pull the curtains closed."
Daisy furrowed her brows, "Why?"
"If you were the culprit and you saw a safe in the homeowner's house, you would think that the item you want to steal might be inside the safe, but you can't open it. What would you do?"
Daisy quickly caught on, her blue eyes sweeping the surroundings, "You're saying he installed a camera."
"Has anything in the house been moved?"
After observing for a while, Daisy shook her head, "I can't tell."
"Pull the curtains closed."
Daisy didn't hesitate any longer and used the remote control to close the curtains, darkening the room instantly.
Luke turned on the camera function on his phone and slowly scanned every corner of the room, paying close attention to places where cameras might be hidden, such as power outlets, clocks, vases, air conditioner vents, tissue boxes, light fixtures, and so on.
Nowadays, there are many mini cameras the size of a coin, with apertures as small as a pinhole, impossible to defend against entirely.
Cameras equipped with infrared functions emit infrared light to supplement the darkness.
As the phone scanned over a wall lamp, Luke faintly saw a red light. He walked closer for a careful examination. The lamp was secured with five screws, one of which lacked a screw, and the red light was emanating from there.
Daisy came over and asked, "Can you be sure that there's a camera inside?"
"I'm not a professional in this area, so we'll only know after opening it up."
"I'll find some tools." Daisy understood that only by confirming the installation of a camera in her home could she prove her claims were true, prompting the police department to reinvestigate the case.
"Wait," Luke considered for a moment and then decided not to dismantle it, "Open the curtains, and let's leave the study first."
"What's wrong?" Daisy asked, puzzled.
"If there really is a camera inside the wall lamp, it means the culprit might be monitoring the situation in the house through the camera. If we dismantle the lamp, it could alert him. What we need to do now is maintain the status quo and avoid letting the other party notice anything."
Daisy countered, "If we don't take it apart, how can we confirm it's a camera? Can a new case be opened?"
Luke studied the position of the wall lamp carefully, "From this angle, the camera can capture the safe and won't be blocked by anyone opening it, perfectly allowing the password to be seen. If I were the suspect, I'd install it here too."
The room was returned to its original state, and the two of them left.
Luke called Susan to report, and Susan agreed to bring someone to conduct a check.
Daisy paced back and forth in the living room, seeming somewhat anxious.
Luke sat on the couch in a daze, actually studying the 'Detection Card'.
[The Detection Card has been used.
Function, detect unknown electronic devices within a ten-meter radius, such as surveillance, eavesdropping, recording, tracking, etc.]
This card might not mean much to an ordinary person, but for detectives and police officers, it's very useful.
...
Ten o'clock at night.
Susan arrived at Daisy's place with her team, including David, Marcus, and two technicians.
David patted Luke on the shoulder, "I'm honored to see you after hours."
Marcus gave a sly wink and said with a smirk, "Buddy, how's the progress?"
Luke ignored the two and reported the situation on site to Susan.
Susan spoke to the technicians, who then entered the study.
Susan then instructed David and Marcus, "Go outside and keep watch, see if there's anyone suspicious around."
A few minutes later, one of the technicians came out of the study, "Captain Susan, we've found a mini camera behind the wall lamp in the study."
"Can we trace it back?"
"The camera transmits signals through a wireless device with a booster, so it can receive signals within several hundred meters. However, the signal source was cut when we checked it, and we can't trace it anymore."
Susan said, "That means the suspect knows the camera has been found."
The technician replied, "There are two possibilities, the first is as you said, the suspect is alerted; the second is that he left after installing the camera and will come back later to receive the video signal."
Susan pressed on, "Are there any other surveillance or eavesdropping devices in the house?"
"Not clear at the moment, we need some time to check."
"Continue your checks."
Susan then said to Luke, "Well done, it now seems that Daisy's robbery was not accidental. There may be other reasons involved."
"Miss Daisy, the police will re-investigate your case. Technicians will thoroughly check your house to see if there are other monitoring or eavesdropping electronic devices;
they will also collect biological traces from the house, like hair, fingerprints, bloodstains, etc. We hope for your permission."
"I am willing to assist in the police investigation. However, how long will the check take? Can I still stay here tonight?"
"I'm sorry, but you'll have to find temporary accommodation."
"Uh… no problem, I can find a hotel to stay in. I'm worried the suspect might harm me, could you assign an officer to protect me?"
"Of course, just wait a while, I'll arrange for a policewoman to take you to the hotel."
Daisy said, "Luke can do it, I trust him."
Susan turned to Luke, "Any problem?"
"No," Luke answered succinctly.
Now was when Daisy was most vulnerable and lacking in a sense of security, and naturally, Luke wouldn't leave her.
Daisy said, "Give me five minutes, I need to grab some clothes to change into."
Luke asked, "Captain, do we need to take a statement from Daisy?"
Susan considered for a moment, "The current situation is still unclear, talk to her for now, and she'll come to the station for a statement tomorrow morning."
A few minutes later.
Luke and Daisy left the house, getting into a red convertible under the astonished gazes of Marcus and David.
Curious, Marcus asked, "Where are you two headed?"
"Do your job; don't ask questions you shouldn't," retorted Luke, his current mission being to protect Daisy, which meant he couldn't casually reveal their whereabouts.
"Did you see that?" Marcus looked at David with a questioning face,
"This kid calls us to investigate, then he takes off with a pretty girl, leaving us here to stand in the cold wind.
OMG, I'm about to lose it!"
With an expressionless face, David said, "I'm bald, not blind."
