Chapter 664: Minefield, Threat, Corpse
10:30 PM, Colorado, northern part of Kit Carson City, a small town located dozens of kilometers away from the suburbs.
On the highway outside the town, a column of a dozen off-road vehicles swiftly advances, kicking up a cloud of dust on the road.
After turning a corner, the pupils of the driver in the lead off-road vehicle suddenly constrict, because he spots a bold and conspicuous stretch of landmines on the road ahead!
Hiss—
The driver in the lead off-road vehicle quickly steps on the brakes to halt the vehicle, and the following off-road vehicles stop one after another. Soon, the communication device of the person in the passenger seat rings, a male voice devoid of emotion comes through:
"What's going on?"
The driver hurriedly responds:
"Sir, there are quite a few landmines on the road ahead!"
There's a pause in the communicator, then the question follows:
"Can you go around?"
The driver in the lead off-road vehicle is just about to reply when he suddenly notices a man walking out of the landmine area not far away, and he quickly shouts:
"Sir! Someone is coming out of the mined area!"
The man in the passenger seat next to the driver, along with the two men in the back seat of the vehicle, swiftly get out with their weapons ready to aim, while at the same time, the man from the mined area yells:
"FBI! I want to speak to your commander!"
The man from the mined area is Luo An. In his left hand, he holds a golden badge, and in his right hand, a Glock 18. His expression is very calm as he loudly says:
"Your commander knows why I'm here. Have him come out; let's have a chat."
"..."
After the words fall, the air is quiet. The few people in the lead off-road vehicle exchange glances and transmit Luo An's words through the communicator.
Not long after, the door of an off-road vehicle in the middle of the convoy opens, and a middle-aged white man dressed in federal military uniform, with a crew cut, tall and large figure, and an expressionless face, walks towards Luo An.
"Good evening, Captain."
Standing in the mined area, Luo An looks at the rank insignia on the other's shoulder, cuts straight to the point, and says:
"I'm here to pick up my agent."
"Luo An Greenwood, one of the toughest team leaders at FBI Washington Headquarters."
The expressionless middle-aged man doesn't pick up on Luo An's words; instead, he says:
"Facing so many guns without a hint of panic, I feel the military would suit you better."
At that moment, behind the middle-aged man stands a group of soldiers dressed in federal army uniforms, all aiming their guns at Luo An.
Luo An is composed and says:
"Thanks for the compliment. Let's not bother with pleasantries; let's talk business.
Give me my people back, and I'll make way for you to pass."
The middle-aged man narrows his eyes slightly:
"Aren't you afraid I'll order them to shoot you dead?"
"You can try."
Luo An looks at the middle-aged man with a semi-smiling expression and says:
"See what happens here after they shoot me dead."
"..."
The middle-aged man frowns slightly and stares at Luo An, while Luo An, unfazed, also quietly looks back at him.
After a long silence in the air, the middle-aged man speaks in a deep voice:
"The two women are unharmed, but they have seen some secrets. To prevent the leakage of secrets, they will be under my custody for now. Once everything is over, I will naturally release them."
"My agents know the rules; they won't speak out of turn and won't interfere with your operations."
Luo An smiles and says:
"If you truly don't trust them, then trust me—my lips are sealed."
The middle-aged man's gaze is sharp and pressuring, but Luo An, as if not seeing it, remains calm and adds:
"Furthermore, I'll give you some information for free.
Before you, several cars drove along this road toward a farm in the distance. Counting the time, it should be less than ten minutes."
The expression on the middle-aged man's face instantly turns grim:
"Why didn't you stop them?"
"Couldn't stop them—simply didn't have the ability, you know that."
Luo An spreads his hands:
"My men are with you, with so many of them, how can I stop it?"
"Don't you have a lot of landmines?"
"Bad memory, I forgot."
The middle-aged man's brow twitched as he looked at Luo An with a dark expression and said in a commanding tone:
"The nuclear warhead business does not need the FBI's involvement. I'll return those two women to you, you take them and leave immediately. What you've seen stays buried in your heart, understand?"
Luo An spread his hands and said nothing. The middle-aged man huffed coldly and waved his hand:
"Release them!"
"Understood!"
His soldiers behind him immediately responded loudly and quickly walked towards a SUV in the distance, pulling out two women with their hands bound and duct tape over their mouths, but otherwise clean and unharmed.
Watching Chenier and Reesi climb up from the ground next to the vehicle, Luo An's eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at the middle-aged man:
"Typical military style."
The middle-aged man ignored Luo An's sarcasm and said:
"I've returned your people, now get rid of the landmines!"
Signaling Chenier and Reesi to head behind the landmines, Luo An waited until they had completely left before retreating out of the minefield himself, then loudly proclaimed:
"It's up to you to handle it now. They won't explode unless I give the order."
Saying this, Luo An led Chenier and Reesi quickly to the car where Winslow had been waiting for a long time. The three of them got into the car, and Winslow immediately started the vehicle and sped away from the area.
Tearing off the duct tape from their mouths, Luo An helped Chenier and Reesi untie the ropes on their wrists. The two women immediately started cursing:
"Don't eat the sour pickles!"
"These damn bugs!"
"A bunch of trash!"
"..."
After venting their anger and calming down, the two women thanked Luo An, then asked:
"Luo An, what was with those landmines?"
"Some good Samaritan lent them to me."
Luo An smiled; the landmines had also come from Wilfredo, who had prepared plenty of weapon caches around the world, including these landmines.
However, not all of the landmines were actually activated; Luo An wasn't that insane.
Using the landmines to threaten the military leadership was just Plan A. If the threat failed, Luo An had Plan B and Plan C, such as quickly taking hostages before the others reacted, forcing them to release the women, or having Winslow take cold shots from a distance, and so on.
After ensuring that Chenier and Reesi had no injuries other than the rope marks on their wrists and had not been tortured during interrogation, everyone breathed a sigh of relief.
After a moment of comfort, Luo An steered the conversation back to the main topic and asked:
"What exactly happened?"
Hearing Luo An's question, Chenier and Reesi's expressions turned serious as they replied:
"We found Matteo's body."
"Body?!"
Winslow and Michelle were very surprised. Luo An frowned and asked:
"Did you find out who killed him?"
"No."
Reesi spread her hands in frustration:
"Chenier and I had just discovered Matteo's body, and before we could go up and check, these soldiers suddenly came out with guns and surrounded us.
Later, the soldiers took the body away, and we saw nothing."
"The captain earlier said they took you because you saw something confidential."
Michelle pondered with a frown:
"Is Matteo's body confidential? Does he have something on him?"
Chenier shook her head, rubbing her wrists:
"I've been thinking about this too. I suspect Matteo's body isn't important. What's important is..."
"What's more important is the person who killed Matteo!"
Luo An's gaze shifted as he continued Chenier's thought, then pressed the communicator and asked:
"Mona, have you found out the identity of that group from earlier?"
