Chapter 665: Military, Struggle, Scapegoat
The mines on the road that hadn't all been activated, Luo An indeed lied to and deceived that captain.
But the fact that a group of people headed to the farm before the captain and his men arrived is the truth that Luo An told.
Just as Luo An, Winslow, and Michelle had hidden the vehicle well, those few cars dashed by, roaring into the distance.
Luckily, Luo An reacted quickly and saw the license plates of those cars, then he reported them to Mona.
"I've looked it up."
Upon hearing Luo An's question, Mona immediately replied through the communicator:
"Those three cars all belong to the same security company, and the owner of the security company is called Ensinor Jia, male, Caucasian, 31 years old this year."
"A security company?!"
Michelle's eyebrows furrowed tightly:
"Why is there a security company involved in this?"
"It should be said, what the person behind this security company wants to do."
Luo An shook his head and rebutted Michelle's words, most security companies within the Federation that have survived until now and are operating successfully are backed by someone over ninety percent of the time.
"Could it be some wealthy tycoon?"
Chenier's eyes flickered, quickly thinking of something, speculated:
"After all, a nuclear warhead is one of the most precious items in the world, it's normal for some wealthy tycoon to want to collect it."
Luo An waved his hands to interrupt the women's speculation and pressed the communicator to ask:
"Mona, is it possible to find out who is behind this security company?"
"Of course."
The sound of keyboard tapping came through the communicator, and Mona replied:
"The person behind this security company hasn't really tried to hide themselves.
His name is Sobian, 36 years old this year, a lieutenant in a certain unit of the Federation Army.
Many of this security company's orders come from Sobian's connections and recommendations."
Upon hearing the word "Lieutenant," Luo An's eyebrows raised as he thought of something, turned to look at Chenier and Reesi, and asked:
"Do you know the name of the captain who kidnapped you?"
During their previous interaction, the other party kept refusing to give a name, so Luo An could only address him by rank.
"His name is Josrey."
Chenier quickly replied:
"Josrey Moke."
Before she and Reesi were taken under control, they had managed to chat with a few ordinary soldiers while the other party wasn't paying attention, and got the name.
Luo An pressed the communicator:
"Mona?"
"I heard it."
The sound of vigorous keyboard tapping came through the communicator, and after a moment, the keyboard sounds stopped, and Mona's voice came:
"These two are connected! More than a decade ago, Sobian and Josrey entered the Federation Army together and were assigned to the same unit; they had a good relationship.
Josrey's promotions came fast, and now he is a captain, while Sobian's promotions have been relatively slow; he's just a lieutenant now and still works under Captain Josrey."
After hearing Mona's description, Winslow, who had been driving and not talking much, suddenly cracked a smile at the corner of his mouth:
"The Federation Army is a place that places extreme emphasis on hierarchy, where subordinates must obey the orders from above without question.
Before, when they were friends of the same rank, and now they have become superiors and subordinates, this is really..."
Reesi sneered on the side, adding:
"Sobian is probably dreaming about this."
"But what does all this have to do with the nuclear warhead?"
Michelle still looked puzzled:
"Even if Lieutenant Sobian is now very dissatisfied with Captain Josrey, he could complain, curse, or even in extreme cases, secretly shoot and kill Josrey with a gun.
But this is about a nuclear warhead; does Sobian plan to steal the nuclear warhead and then blow up Josrey with it? Isn't that a bit over the top?"
"Maybe he's planning to take revenge on the military."
Mona's voice came through the communicator as she speculated:
"Sobian is likely very dissatisfied with the promotion system in the federal army, so he plans to take this opportunity to steal the nuclear warheads and take revenge on society."
"..."
From a rational standpoint, Mona's speculation was far-fetched.
But this is the Federation, where biodiversity is extremely rich. Getting revenge on society doesn't require lofty reasons; even a rise in mineral water prices can cause explosive incidents. Therefore, Mona's speculation was logical and reasonable.
After a few seconds of silence, Reesi suddenly clapped her hands together and said with a laugh:
"Anyway, this nuclear warhead issue is internal military strife.
Captain Josrey has just said that our FBI doesn't need to get involved, and however it turns out, it has nothing to do with our investigation team.
So, should we head back?"
Winslow's brow furrowed slightly, Michelle and Chenier exchanged glances, then turned their attention to the group leader Luo An.
Luo An pondered for a few seconds, then slowly shook his head:
"No, we still need to find the nuclear warheads."
The smile on Reesi's face gradually disappeared, and after some thought, she looked up and asked:
"Are you worried that the military might pin the blame on us?"
Luo An said coldly:
"Not might, but definitely will!"
From the official procedure of this matter, the people leading the search for the missing nuclear warheads were Luo An and others from the special investigation team of FBI Washington Headquarters, with Ophelia from the military as auxiliary and helping personnel.
Captain Josrey and others were involved in "private activities" not established by official procedure, and everything was Captain Josrey's "own" idea.
If the nuclear warheads were successfully found, that would be one thing, and afterwards it would simply be a matter of everyone passing the buck and dividing up interests.
Once the nuclear warhead explodes, causing extensive deaths and widespread nuclear radiation, someone will have to take the blame.
By then, Captain Josrey and the others would certainly not fare well, and Luo An and his team would also be very likely to suffer bad consequences.
Because they are the official, procedural special investigation team looking for the nuclear warheads.
Should the nuclear head explode, that counts as a failure of duty, and someone must take the blame.
With Vireness, Mr. Clement, and FBI Director Robert's protection, Luo An would most likely only be criticized, demoted, take a break for a while, and might rise again in the future.
But why should one suffer the consequences of others' mistakes and be dragged into taking the blame?
Luo An did not possess such a spirit of self-sacrifice. Therefore, after finishing this analysis, he said firmly:
"Everyone, we can ignore the internal military strife, and however many of them die has nothing to do with us, but we must find the nuclear warheads."
And then throw the blame right back.
"OK."
"Understood."
The expressions of Winslow and others in the car turned serious as they all nodded together. Everyone in the special investigation team would share in Luo An's glories and setbacks.
Winslow, who was driving, slowly decreased the speed of the car and took a deep breath before asking:
"Should we return the same way?"
"Right now, Captain Josrey might already be exchanging fire with the security company."
Reesi's eyes darted around as she lifted the corners of her mouth, proposing:
"We could do what we did during the operation in BaX last time, play the role of the mantis stalking the cicada, wait for both sides to finish fighting, then move in later and steal the nuclear warheads!"
"Doing so will provoke fierce resistance from Captain Josrey and the others."
Chenier shook her head and thought for a moment before making her suggestion:
"How about we take advantage of their battle now and come in from behind to quietly steal the nuclear warheads?"
"That's too difficult."
Reesi shook her head in rebuttal. Michelle ignored the debate between the two and turned her gaze to Luo An, asking:
"Luo An, what do you plan to do?"
Luo An rested his chin in his hand and was silent for a long time, his eyes slightly narrowed:
"Is there a possibility that the real nuclear warheads aren't actually with Josrey and the others?"
"?"
