Chapter 663: paw→pawn
New Mexico, 2:30 PM, Highway 134, inside an ambulance.
"Do you know the two secret bases of Matteo?"
Hearing the information from Wilfredo, Luo An was somewhat surprised:
"Matteo didn't discover them?"
"How could I possibly let him discover them."
Wilfredo revealed a sly smile, indicating that it wasn't just Matteo's bases; he had obtained the specific locations of many people in the business through various means.
He had never taken action before because there hadn't been anything worth moving for.
At the same time, these specific locations were also backups Wilfredo kept for himself, even as a retirement plan.
If one day he ran out of money, he could just visit those bases and take the stock, those Treasure Hunters in Wilfredo's eyes were nothing more than security guards keeping the treasures for him.
Looking at Wilfredo's sly-smiling face, Luo An was quite emotional.
It wasn't about how Wilfredo's plans were, but about how over time, every person he met seemed to be smarter than the next, with endless cunning strategies, none being simple-minded.
Because of being fooled and unfairly blamed, Wilfredo was very angry
Not only did he give Luo An the specific locations of Matteo's two secret bases, but he also provided a suspected location of another one of his bases, as well as several of his own backup armories, insisting that Luo An must capture Matteo.
The ambulance took Wilfredo to the hospital once more, and Luo An turned the car around, heading in the direction of the cell phone location left by Chenier.
Chenier and Reesi had previously gone to a place also in New Mexico, which was the city of Lawton, located in the easternmost part of the state.
At 5:30 PM, Luo An drove into the city. Winslow and Michelle had arrived there before him and had already located Chenier's cellphone with Mona's guidance.
"Chenier left us a clue."
Inside the car, Winslow handed Chenier's cellphone to Luo An, his face solemn:
"It's a few letters: paw."
Seeing these letters, Luo An's mind instantly clicked, and he shook his head:
"This isn't left by Chenier, it's left by Reesi."
Winslow looked puzzled:
"Why do you say that?"
Holding the phone and adding an 'n' after "paw", Luo An explained:
"Because these letters aren't complete, one is missing."
Winslow glanced at it, furrowing his brow:
"Pawn, it means hostage."
Just as Winslow finished, Michelle from the back seat had a sudden realization:
"No! It means 'soldier', this word is 'soldier' in chess!"
"Exactly."
Some time ago during a vacation, Reesi met a girl who liked chess, so she bought a chess set to start learning. During lunch breaks at work, she even pulled Luo An to play together.
Luo An understood the rules of Eastern chess but didn't know the rules of international chess, so he lost the first 3 games.
Once he got familiar with the rules, Luo An won 10 games in a row, and then Reesi no longer played with him.
Hearing Michelle's explanation, Winslow instantly understood, then frowned and said:
"Did Reesi leave this word, meaning that the military personnel took her and Chenier away?"
Luo An nodded:
"Most likely."
Suddenly, Michelle remembered something, looked left and right but didn't find anyone, and asked:
"Luo An, where's that woman from the military? Where did she go?"
"She's sleeping in the trunk."
Luo An responded casually, not delving further into the matter, and took out his cellphone to call Mona:
"Mona, have you found any clues on your end?"
"Not yet."
Mona on the other side had her brows tightly knit and said:
"The surveillance cameras near the area where Chenier and Reesi disappeared had been wiped, I can't find anything."
After a pause, Mona tentatively asked:
"Do you want me to access the military system?"
"No need."
Luo An's eyelids twitched, and he quickly interrupted Mona's thought.
The military occupies a special place in the Federation that is completely self-contained, which even the President can't intervene in.
Annually, hundreds of billions in military spending—anyone who investigates it ends up with a bullet in the back, ruled as suicide.
Under such circumstances, there is no need to hack the military system to search for clues.
Luo An pondered briefly and asked:
"Mona, aside from the surveillance in our current area that's been wiped, has the surveillance been cleared in other areas of Lawton City?"
"There are, such as on your east side."
Tapping the keyboard a few times, Mona quickly replied:
"If the areas where surveillance was cleared are connected as segments, it confirms that those people left Lawton City from your east side."
"East side..."
Luo An's brow furrowed slightly, and he gestured to Winslow:
"Get me a map of New Mexico."
"OK."
It's a habit for the investigative team to buy several maps whenever they go on missions in other states of the Federation, just in case.
Winslow quickly found the map and handed it to Luo An, who looked at the cities on it and suddenly asked:
"Mona, check the surveillance in the city of Naravita, see if any footage has been deleted."
"OK."
Mona agreed immediately and began the investigation. Winslow asked with some confusion:
"Why Naravita?"
"Because this city is a necessary route to Matteo's first secret base."
Luo An briefly introduced the clue he had recently acquired from Wilfredo.
Matteo's two secret bases are not inside any city but are located on two farms.
From Lawton City where Luo An and his two companions were, they would have to pass through several cities to reach those farms.
By verifying if these cities had any surveillance deletion incidents, they could deduce the antagonists' route and target.
It wasn't long before Mona's voice rang out from the cell phone again:
"Luo An, there's no surveillance missing in Naravita."
"Keep checking."
Luo An continued with a few other city names and, after a pause, suddenly Mona's voice, filled with excitement, burst through the phone:
"Luo An, I found it!"
Winslow and Michelle instantly looked up, reinvigorated, and Luo An hastily asked:
"Which city?"
"It's Kapilin City, at the very north of New Mexico!"
Luo An grabbed the map again, carefully examined it for a few seconds, a smile breaking across his face, and said:
"That's the direction to Matteo's second secret base. We can confirm that the people who kidnapped Reesi and Chenier are from the military, and they are also looking for nuclear warheads."
Having obtained their whereabouts, Winslow and Michelle were thrilled, but there was still a puzzling issue, Michelle asked with confusion:
"Why would the military abduct Chenier and Reesi?
Aren't we also ordered to look for the nuclear warheads?"
"Perhaps precisely because we are also looking for the nuclear warheads."
Luo An handed the map back to Winslow, a cold gleam flashed in his eyes, and he muttered coldly:
"There are too many dirty deals in the Federation Army."
Spending 6 million US dollars to airlift 9 sheep, and in the end, they couldn't find the sheep because they were eaten.
Such "small matters" are countless in the Federation Army, and with something as big as nuclear warheads, it's unclear what kind of backdoor games are being played.
"Mona, make a call, help arrange a helicopter."
Starting the SUV, Luo An floored the accelerator, the vehicle merged onto the highway, and as he drove he said:
"We'll head directly to Matteo's second secret base and wait there for Chenier and Reesi."
