Journey to Godhood Begins in Frieren

Chapter 217: The Tail is Real!

"Yaaah!"

The girl, shocked and embarrassed, immediately let out an indignant cry.

Shichen was startled too. He hurriedly steadied her, then withdrew his hand and stepped back. Luckily they were far from the classrooms, so almost no one noticed.

"W‑Wait! Don't shout— I didn't do it on purpose; it was an act of God!"

Shichen never imagined he would say such a thing, but the next moment his brow knitted: he suddenly recalled something he had overlooked.

Hadn't "she" once told him his special privilege in this world was being a "lucky pervert"?

Was that kicking in now?

Otherwise, how could his hand have slipped perfectly through the other side and grabbed—

"Mm…"

Clutching her chest, the girl stepped back twice and glared at Shichen in mortified anger, biting her lip. "I… I understand…."

She couldn't really blame the new principal for taking advantage of her—she knew it had been beyond his control—yet being groped like that, and… well, it was hard to accept.

"Ahem… as compensation, let me pick up those files for you." Shichen coughed twice and apologized.

"No… no need—"

She shook her head and was about to refuse, when Lala suddenly raised her hand. "I'll help too!"

With that, Lala crouched down and began gathering the scattered papers.

"Uh… all right then." The girl gave in and crouched to collect them.

Shichen helped as well, asking while he worked, "Which class are you in? What's your name?"

"M‑My name is Yui Kotegawa, Class 2‑A." Yui spoke shyly, not daring to meet his gaze.

"Is that so? Kotegawa‑san, let me apologize again."

"There's… no need. I know the principal was saving me…"

"But I still don't believe rescuing someone involves touching your—"

"D‑Don't bring it up again!" Yui turned away, cheeks flaming.

"All right, I won't."

The three soon had all the papers picked up.

"Here you go, Yui," Lala said cheerfully, calling her by her given name as she handed them over.

"Huh? 'Yui'?" Yui blinked—she hadn't expected to be addressed so familiarly.

"Isn't that what I should call you?" Lala asked.

"It's… fine, I guess."

"Hee‑hee! I'm Lala. Nice to meet you!" Lala introduced herself happily.

"Lala?" Yui looked to Shichen, puzzled.

"She's about your age—no need to be formal," Shichen said.

"All right, I understand." Yui nodded slightly.

"You two should get along; you might even end up classmates."

"Eh? Principal, what do you mean?"

"I plan to have Lala transfer here. Lala, would you like to be in the same class as Kotegawa‑san?" Shichen asked.

"Yes! I want to be friends with Yui!" Lala answered at once, eyes shining.

"Then, Kotegawa‑san, I'll be relying on you to look after her."

"Uh? Oh… okay…" Yui was still confused.

"Thank you, Yui," Lala said gratefully.

"You're welcome… May I ask what your relationship with the principal is?"

"I'm Shichen's girlfriend!" Lala hugged Shichen's arm, beaming.

"Girlfriend…"

Yui's bright eyes flicked between them—and then she noticed the tail swaying behind Lala.

"What is that?"

"Oh, this? It's my tail~" Lala turned so Yui could see and even wiggled it.

"A… tail… that moves…"

Something seemed to click in Yui's mind; her face went scarlet and she stared at Shichen in shock. "Principal—you… you're shameless!"

"Eh?"

Shichen froze, then his mouth twitched. This girl was obviously imagining nonsense.

"Kotegawa‑san, you misunderstand. Lala's tail is real."

"A real tail? Do you take me for an idiot, Principal?"

"It's true. Lala's an alien, so she has a tail," Shichen said helplessly.

"An alien?" Yui looked at Lala incredulously.

"Really!" Lala nodded, smiling. "I'm from Planet Deviluke. My full name is Lala Satalin Deviluke."

Yui glanced back and forth between them, still dubious.

"Here, watch." Shichen raised his right hand; a ball of golden flame suddenly sprang up in his palm.

"W‑What?" Yui's eyes went wide.

"Now do you believe it?"

"Is… is that some kind of magic trick?" she asked uncertainly.

"It's real fire."

"Seriously? Then are you an alien too, Principal?"

"I'm not. I just want you to know this world isn't quite so ordinary." He flipped his hand and the fire vanished.

"I… I see…" Yui kept staring at his hand, her world clearly shaken.

"Anyway, Lala will need your help at school from now on." Shichen patted her shoulder.

"All right… I'll go deliver these documents to the office first."

"Go ahead."

"See you later, Yui~" Lala waved.

"Mm, bye…" Yui walked off, still glancing back at them.

Once she was out of sight, Shichen continued showing Lala around the second‑year wing.

Soon the bell rang for class. Being principal, he could keep inspecting at will.

Among the second‑years, Class 2‑A interested him most; he knew quite a few people there, so he saved it for last.

Passing the corridor window, Shichen glanced in and noticed a brown‑haired boy sneakily watching a quiet girl with short blue‑violet hair—only for the boy's eyes to lock with his.

Flustered, the boy whipped his head away.

Shichen chuckled, nodded at Yui (now back in her seat), and guided Lala on to the third‑year building.

Among the third‑years, what impressed him most was that extravagant young lady with her two attendants. After a quick circuit, he led Lala back to his office.

By then, news of the two of them had spread throughout the entire school.

Shichen had only taken office yesterday, yet every student and teacher already knew him. He was so young, and today he'd toured campus with a stunning girl—complete with a tail. Of course everyone gossiped.

The hottest topic was their relationship; naturally, "couple" was the favored conclusion.

For a while, curiosity and rumor ran wild and no one could focus on class.

Shichen didn't care whether they paid attention; it wasn't his problem. Getting Lala settled in school mattered more.

With time to spare, he had her build a hidden room in his office—somewhere he could sneak off for naps. Given all her inventions, putting one together was easy.

By noon, her enrollment was finished, though Shichen decided she would start classes the next day.

The secret room still wasn't done; Lala seemed intent on crafting it to perfection.

They went home for lunch, and even simple grilled saury had Lala singing praises.

That afternoon, Shichen planned to show her the rest of the campus—the club hall, athletic field, swimming pool—but on the way they ran into Zastin.

"Zastin? You're back again?" The moment she saw him, Lala stepped in front of Shichen protectively, eyes wary.

"Please don't misunderstand, Ojou-sama. I'm not here to take you home or to challenge Shichen."

"Then why?"

"King Deviluke wishes to contact Shichen," Zastin said gravely.

"Father?"

"Yes. I've already reported your situation to His Majesty."

"What did Father say?" Lala couldn't help asking.

"This is the King's message." Zastin produced a skull‑shaped communicator.

"Let's hear it," Shichen said with a nod.

"Yes, sir."

Bzz‑‑‑

A burst of electronic static, then a deep, dignified voice came through:

"Hello… Shichen… I've heard from Zastin about you and Lala. Since my daughter likes you, I acknowledge your relationship and permit you to become one of her fiancés. I hear you can spar with Zastin? Then you'd better protect her. Your affair is known across the galaxy now, and Lala's other fiancés will surely come looking for trouble… Don't let her be stolen away, or else—your life, and your planet, will be annihilated."

Bzz‑‑‑

Another burst of static. Then silence.

Apparently that was the entirety of the galactic overlord's message.
