"I still have the energy to walk with you."
"No need." Gwen gently shook her head, tucked her golden hair behind her ears, and smiled, "The one you bought last night is enough."
"Is that so?"
Mike's heart suddenly skipped a beat. He glanced at the graceful outline of Gwen's profile beside him and realized that the girl who had grown up with him was now becoming increasingly beautiful.
Yes.
Sometimes, when you're used to something, you unexpectedly see another side of it.
At this moment, Mike suddenly understood why George was so hostile toward him.
But after realizing this, could he still simply think of Gwen as a good friend?
Just as Mike was caught in this thought, he noticed Gwen shudder.
Gwen's hair stood on end, her pupils contracted, and she stared out the shopping mall window in confusion.
On the road outside the mall, all the cars had come to a standstill. Drivers and pedestrians froze, gazing up at the sky, their faces pale with fear.
"What is that?"
Students and shoppers near the mall windows looked up in shock, pointing at the sky outside.
Mike and Gwen exchanged a glance, quickly stood up, and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window.
What met their eyes was a massive blue beam of light shooting into the sky.
The beam originated from the Stark Industries headquarters several miles away, piercing the clouds and tearing a dark, ominous crack in the heavens above New York City. From the black void sustained by the blue beam, countless small, black objects emerged, descending in droves toward the city below.
Among them, dozens of flying black shapes were heading straight for Times Square.
___
New York.
The city's most central and bustling urban hub!
A massive blue beam of light illuminated the sky, ripping it open into a black, abyssal hole. From the cosmic void, dense swarms of flying objects poured forth.
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!
Explosions thundered li ke an unrelenting storm. Terror descended on the city, catching everyone off guard.
Buzz—
Dozens of mysterious black shapes sped toward Times Square. One of them was heading directly for the shopping mall where Mike and Gwen stood.
Mike's eyes widened in disbelief as the black object grew larger and clearer.
As it neared the mall, it became apparent that it was a flying machine resembling a sea motorcycle. However, its pilot was no human. Its body gleamed with metallic luster, reflecting the sunlight.
Before the machine fully entered the pedestrian street, a searing red flame shot from its front, trailing a blazing tail of destruction as it streaked toward the building.
"Careful!"
Mike acted instinctively, grabbing Gwen and diving backward to the ground.
A split second later, a deafening explosion erupted between the third and fourth floors of the building. Glass shattered, reinforced concrete crumbled, and the floor near the building's edge collapsed with a resounding crash.
BANG!
The force of the blast sent debris and flames into the mall. Thick black smoke began to engulf the space.
"Ahem... Gwen, are you okay?" Mike coughed, his ears ringing. The floor before him had collapsed, leaving them dangerously close to the edge.
But none of that mattered.
When Mike had tackled Gwen, she had twisted her body mid-fall to shield him, using her own body to absorb the impact.
Mike, unscathed, stood up and anxiously looked around. The smoke was so thick he could barely see two meters ahead.
"Gwen? Gwen!" He called out, panic gripping his chest.
Thud!
A metallic sound echoed as a towering figure entered the smoke-filled mall. Red, soulless eyes pierced through the haze. A nearly two-meter-tall mechanical humanoid emerged, holding an alien energy weapon. Its scanning red eyes locked onto the terrified humans inside.
"You bastard!" Mike roared, his fists clenched. The silver bracelet hidden beneath his sleeve glowed red, reacting to his rage. A divine light emanated as the artifact awakened.
But before Mike could act, another figure moved faster.
A flash of golden hair darted between Mike and the alien robot. Gwen, her skirt fluttering, grabbed the robot's metal arm with both hands.
BANG!
With incredible strength, Gwen threw the robot to the ground, cracking the floor beneath them. She leaped into the air and, as she descended, delivered a crushing punch to the robot's face.
CRACK!
The mechanical head shattered, sparking and crackling with electric currents.
"Gwen?!" Mike stared in disbelief. The force behind her punch was immense—easily over a ton.
Was this Gwen? His childhood friend who used to ask him to unscrew bottle caps?
This couldn't be real.
Still stunned, Mike let Gwen grab his hand and pull him deeper into the mall.
Gwen led Mike into an empty clothing store, ducking into a fitting room. She unzipped her backpack, revealing a sleek black-and-white Spider-Woman suit.
So it was her.
Mike's thoughts raced. The Spider-Woman he had seen that night... it had been Gwen.
Before Mike could speak, Gwen grabbed the hem of her shirt and pulled it over her head.
Her toned, athletic body was revealed. Fair skin stretched over well-defined muscles. Mike froze.
"Turn around." Gwen demanded, her cheeks flushing as she bit her lip.
Mike obeyed, turning away as she quickly changed. A moment later, her voice, now firm and commanding, brought him back to reality.
When Mike turned back, standing before him was Spider-Woman.
"I'll explain everything later." Gwen said. Her tone was resolute, "For now, I'm getting everyone out of here."
Mike nodded.
Under Spider-Woman's guidance, the students and instructors evacuated the mall into the chaos of the streets outside. Alien machines wreaked havoc, cars lay in ruins, and New York City descended into mayhem.
Mike glanced at the distant beam of light tearing through the sky. The dark abyss above Stark Tower loomed larger, ominous thunder crackling within.
New York was fighting back, its heroes battling to stem the tide. But unless the portal was closed, the alien forces would keep pouring in.
This was an invasion unlike any other.
Under the protection of Spider-Woman, the instructor and students successfully exited the shopping mall and reached the pedestrian street outside.
Mike looked around and saw that the situation on the city streets was even worse than it had been inside the mall moments ago.
The school bus that had been parked at the entrance of the mall was now crushed into a pile of scrap metal by the collapsed building. Vehicles involved in chain collisions blocked the main roads. Alien machines swarmed the streets and alleys, killing indiscriminately and unleashing explosions. The air was filled with the cries and screams of terrified humans. The entire center of New York was in complete chaos!
At this moment, it felt like the end of the world.
"That is..."
Amid the chaos, Mike noticed a familiar tall figure on the roof of a car.
The man was wearing a distinctive blue uniform with a star emblem on the chest and carried a five-star round shield on his left arm.
Unlike the toy replicas sold in stores, this shield exuded a genuine metallic texture. Its perfect trajectory as it was thrown, striking an alien robot and returning to the man's hand, confirmed it was the real deal—a shield of significant historical importance.
"Captain." Mike's heart raced. There was more than one superhero fighting in New York now.
Captain America, Steve Rogers, spotted Mike among the crowd. He leapt down from the car and quickly approached Mike and the students.
"It's dangerous here. You need to leave immediately!" He said firmly.
"But where is safe now?" Instructor Roth asked anxiously.
Captain America's face, partially visible beneath his helmet, was grim, "Nowhere in New York is safe. You need to get out of the city center as quickly as possible. Authorities are setting up evacuation zones in the outer boroughs."
Mike's stomach sank. Was the situation truly so dire?
He raised his gaze to the distant beam of blue light piercing the sky. The black abyss above Stark Industries' headquarters was expanding rapidly. The sky above the nearby urban area had turned pitch black, rumbling with deafening thunder. Lightning bolts occasionally struck from the void, tearing through alien spacecraft in midair.
Clearly, other extraordinary heroes were already fighting to halt the invasion.
But it wasn't enough.
Even with New York's superheroes holding the line, unless the portal was closed, the alien mechanical army would keep increasing exponentially.
This was the second large-scale alien invasion in modern human history.
Mike handed the alien energy gun he had picked up earlier to Instructor Roth. He had no experience with firearms, and the silver bracelet on his wrist—a mysterious artifact—offered him better protection than any alien weapon.
Thanks to the superheroes battling on the frontlines and Spider-Woman's covert assistance, Mike, his classmates, and their instructor safely evacuated the war-torn city center.
Ten kilometers outside the danger zone, they reached an area untouched by the alien forces. Police officers struggled to maintain order on the roads as vehicles and pedestrians packed the streets. People carried bags of belongings, desperately trying to flee New York City.
Instructor Roth, now wearing the alien energy gun slung across his chest, addressed his assistant and the students.
"Baker, take the students and continue evacuating out of the city." He instructed.
"You're staying behind?" Baker asked, surprised.
Roth nodded resolutely, "Some of the students got separated from the group earlier. As their instructor, I have to stay and find them."
"Alright." Baker sighed, realizing Roth's mind was made up, "Be careful."
Suddenly, Baker glanced around the group and frowned, "Wait, where's Mike?"
The students exchanged confused looks.
"I don't know." One of them said, "He was just here a moment ago."
