Chapter 374: Bad Person?

"Lillian?"
"Hey, you busy?" Lillian pressed the speaker of her phone to her ear as she leaned her back against a wall inside an alleyway.
"... No. Not right now, at least... Did you need something?"
"Ehe... No, I just wanted to say good morning, that's all..." Lillian muttered with a shy expression as she twirled a lock of her hair. "Did you sleep well?"
"Ah, I see... Good morning to you, too, Lillian. And yes, I did sleep rather well." Marionette then went silent before adding, "I recall that today you will be hunting something, am I right?"
"Ah yeah, you're right. Currently..." Lillian threw a glance outside and eyed the slow-moving line, "There's a massive line of people looking to try and get a crack at it."
"... A... Line? That's rather peculiar. Are they in parties or solo?"
"Parties, I believe."
"Hm... Any noteworthy groups there?"
"Not yet. But they will come, I think. It's pretty early in the morning, like 10am."
"... That's early?"
When Marionette asked that, Lillian could already imagine the woman raising an eyebrow at her. Lillian's face twitched a bit, but then she sighed, "Well... I guess, not really. But you get what I mean."
Lillian then went on to estimate how many there were and how long the line stretched. And after a bit of description, Marionette gave a low hum before speaking:
"Mhm... Well then, if the line is as big as you say it is, try to let as many people go in first before you do. Let them weaken the monster before claiming it for yourself."
Lillian nodded to the Assassin's words; she had already planned to do this before. After a little chat, Lillian decided to end the call, but only once she had said:
"Alright, I should be going now. Love ya, Mari~."
"Mhm. I love you too, Lillian. Make sure to send a picture of your spoils."
Lillian returned to Millis and waited for the line to shorten a bit. The Heroine, who was expressing clear signs of boredom, asked as she rested her upper body on the table:
"Lil'... Are we just going to be stuck here all day? That line is barely movin'... How about we just get in line and just hope we get to the front, quick?"
Lillian glanced down at Millis with a smirk and shook her head, "Let's just wait a bit more."
From that point, all the way to the afternoon, Millis had constantly groaned in Lillian's ear, which made the Rabbit rather irritated. And that was when Lillian finally gave her reasoning.
Lillian pointed at the line outside the window, then she stated:
"Look, Millis. If we just let all of those guys fight the Alpha first, they would weaken it. And by the time we join in the line and get into the mine, it would have been already weakened or tired."
Millis widened her eyes slightly before speaking in a worried voice, "But wouldn't those people be losing their lives fighting that thing? What about that, Lil'?"
Lillian squinted at the Heroine for a moment and felt a change in the air between them. Lillian also noticed a glint flashing through Millis's pupils, which caused her to smirk and lean back into her seat.
Wrapping her arms behind her head, Lillian chuckled in a low and nonchalant tone, "Look, they already knew the consequences when they became Mages. Every person in that line of business know they would be seriously injured."
Lillian then shrugged with a playful and uncaring look in her eyes, "And why should I care? If they're off to do something dangerous, then let them. We aren't babysitters for adults."
Millis frowned for a split moment and rested her right elbow on the table before leaning the side of her face into her palm. The Heroine then said in an oddly naive manner, "Well, doesn't that make ya a bad person, then, Lillian? How about ya become something like a hero?"
Millis then perked up and straightened her back with an expectant look, "Ooo~! How about we both become heroes together?!" Millis then swiped her hands through the air, "Crime-fightin' partners in the name of justice!"
Lillian widened her eyes for a moment and began to cackle at Millis, who narrowed her eyes and pouted at the girl.
"What ya laughin' for? I thought that was a great idea..."
"Haha, it is, I think. But I'm not that type of person, really. And to answer that earlier question, I don't think it'll change much since I am a bad person."
Lillian shrugged with a playful and carefree look, "I'm not the type of person to go around saving people indiscriminately, especially people who are willing to do something dangerous for some prize."
Lillian then watched as Millis's face wrinkled a bit at her words. Lillian sighed, scratching the back of her scalp, "Or... I could be a walking contradiction, but anyway—"
Lillian moved around the booth and sat next to the Heroine, who was pouting a bit at her words.
Patting Millis's shoulder, Lillian smiled and wrapped an arm around the woman's neck, "Look, bud. Even if I may not be the hero, I can surely bet you will be a great one in the future. Even if you're a bit perverse."
"Oi! I'm not perverse, I'm honest!"
"Eh... But are you being honest, right now?"
"I always am!"
After a little conversation inside the cafe and a little longer, it was eventually afternoon. And because of that, they were now lining up.
As they shuffled along with the line, they noticed more and more people wandering the streets, either bruised or seriously wounded. Fortunately, it wasn't as bad as a missing limb or such, but still.
After a few more hours, they were now closer to the entrance of the mine. It was then that Lillian decided to take a long look at her current loadout.
[Shards: Regular's Last Grasp, Lady Fate's Lucky Necklace of Entertainment, Swiftstep, Regular's Last Spite, Carapace Hunter, Fluttering Prowl]
Lillian hadn't changed anything about it, but she felt the current loadout of hers could do very well. Although Lillian wasn't sure she might need the Beetle, she decided to leave him in.
Lillian had thought about swapping something out for the Black Maw, but she realised it would just be best for it to be in her spatial ring instead.
"Woah..."
Lillian raised her head and looked towards Millis, finding her staring towards a certain part of the mining site. Lillian raised an eyebrow and followed her gaze, finding it to be settled on a surveillance station.
Displayed on these screens was live-camera footage of the entire cavern below.
What Lillian found were several piles of Barrel Moles strewn across the ground, bloodied and unalive. Lillian's eyes flashed with a satisfied look, knowing that she wouldn't have to deal with being swarmed any time soon.
But then, Lillian looked at another screen, finding one of the couple of teams inside struggling against a buffed horde of Barrel Moles. Lillian knew that they were buffed due to the fact that they moved far quicker than usual.
These Barrel Moles crushed and tore through their armour with ease. If these people had enchantments, Lillian knew for a fact that they were incredibly weak.
'Doesn't look like they're doing too well...'
Right before one of the members of this group fell and could suffer a fatal injury—
"TELEPORT THEM OUT!"
—A commanding voice erupted to the side.
Lillian and the surrounding people glanced towards one man commanding a group of Space Mages to teleport the injured team out. It was Zeke.
Zeke crossed off the name of the group from a clipboard and gestured for them to leave with a taciturn face, "I commend you for your attempt, but unfortunately you cannot make the cut."
The leader of the supposed team with dented armour stood up to Zeke's face and yelled with a frustrated voice, still brimming with adrenaline:
"Why the hell did you pull us out!? We could have done it! There's just a few more of those damn moles int here, we could've—"
Zeke flashed him a cold look, "And you could have died along with your team. How about you sit back down and think about the safety of your group first?"
Walking away, Zeke stumbled upon Lillian and Millis, who waited patiently in line while staring at him. Zeke momentarily widened his eyes and smiled slightly at the sight of them, "Oh? Are you two here to watch the live footage over there?"
Zeke then looked behind them, finding out that there weren't any more people coming, "You might not get much entertainment out of it... Unless you two are into watching people get hurt."
"Huh? No, no. We are willing to fight the monster as well. As for the people behind us... I think they got too bored of waiting and left after seeing how many people got hurt."
