Chapter 125: a strange feeling(3)

The battle between their groups raged on in the distance, but Liam's attention had drifted, his mind far from the action. His gaze fixed on Alex, who stood across from him with an air of quiet confidence. There was something about Alex—something familiar, but Liam couldn't place it. It felt as though he had seen this face before, somewhere in the depths of his memories. The odd sensation was unnerving, distracting him from the fight at hand.

Liam (thinking):

Why does he feel so familiar? Milla, Dakota, Ethan, even the others... it's like I've seen them all before, but I can't remember when...

His focus wavered for a brief moment, enough for Alex to notice. With a smirk, he stepped forward.

Alex (grinning):

"You seem distracted, Liam. Something on your mind?"

Liam shook his head sharply, trying to clear his thoughts. He couldn't afford to lose this fight. He was here for a reason, to protect his friends. He had to focus.

Liam (gritting his teeth):

"I'm fine. Let's get this over with."

Without waiting for a response, Liam lunged forward, throwing a quick jab aimed at Alex's chest. But Alex was already moving, sidestepping effortlessly, a smug look still lingering on his face.

Alex (mocking):

"Is that all you've got?"

Liam gritted his teeth. His opponent was fast, maybe even faster than he had anticipated. He adjusted quickly, aiming a kick at Alex's legs, trying to throw him off balance. But once again, Alex dodged, moving with an almost unnatural fluidity.

Liam (thinking):

How does he know every move I'm about to make?

Liam pressed on, his attacks faster, more aggressive, trying to force Alex into a mistake. But every time he struck, Alex was already one step ahead, parrying, dodging, and countering with ease. It was as if Alex could predict his every movement. It didn't make sense.

Liam (thinking):

I'm faster than this. I've fought opponents stronger than him. So why is this happening?

Liam's frustration grew. He needed to land a blow, but every time he thought he had an opening, Alex was there, closing it before it could be exploited.

Liam (gritting his teeth):

"You're not that good. Stop dodging."

Alex laughed softly, the sound almost mocking.

Alex:

"You're not getting it, are you? It's not about dodging, Liam. It's about knowing what's coming before it even happens."

The words stung, but they didn't make sense. Liam's brow furrowed.

Liam (thinking):

What does he mean? How does he know what I'm going to do?

Alex's casual grace in evading Liam's every attack began to wear him down. He could feel his energy slipping, his strikes becoming slower, more predictable. And yet, the feeling of familiarity persisted. It was like a nagging thought in the back of his mind that refused to be ignored.

Liam (thinking):

This isn't just about fighting. There's something... something more.

He pushed harder, launching a flurry of punches and kicks, his body screaming for a hit. But Alex was still too quick, too precise. With a quick sidestep, Alex caught Liam's arm and twisted it behind his back, forcing him into a painful hold.

Alex (smirking):

"You've got potential, Liam, but you're not ready. You're out of your depth."

Liam grunted in pain, trying to free himself, but Alex's grip was too strong. The world spun as Alex effortlessly restrained him, and Liam realized—he couldn't win. Not today.

Alex gave him no time to recover. With one swift motion, he spun Liam around, slamming him to the ground with a thud that rattled Liam's bones. He gasped for air, his vision blurring. For a moment, everything was a haze of pain.

Liam lay on the ground, stunned, trying to catch his breath. His muscles burned from the fight, and his mind felt foggy. It wasn't just the physical exhaustion—it was the confusion, the overwhelming sense of something missing.

Liam (thinking):

Why do I feel like I know him? Like I've seen him... somewhere before?

He blinked, but the feeling didn't go away. Alex stood above him, looking down with that same calm, almost bored expression, as if this fight was nothing more than a casual sparring match.

Alex (shrugging):

"You're not bad, but you're not there yet. You've still got a lot to learn."

Liam tried to move, to push himself back up, but his body wouldn't cooperate. It felt like his limbs were made of lead.

Liam:

"Who... who are you? Why do you all feel so familiar?"

Alex paused at the question, tilting his head slightly as if considering the answer. For a moment, there was a flicker of something—something between curiosity and amusement—in his eyes. But then, it faded, replaced by the same calm indifference.

Alex (shaking his head):

"I'm not sure what you're talking about, Liam. I don't know what you mean."

His voice was level, even though Liam could see the faintest hint of confusion in his eyes. It wasn't what Liam expected. He thought Alex would have some answer, some explanation. But instead, it seemed like Alex had no clue what he was talking about.

Liam (frustrated):

"Don't lie to me! I know I've seen you before—all of you. This isn't the first time, is it?"

Alex stood there for a moment, his expression unreadable, before he took a step back, allowing Liam to struggle to his feet.

Alex:

"Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about, Liam. But you need to stop looking for answers where there aren't any."

The words were blunt, almost dismissive, but they carried a weight that Liam couldn't shake. Was he losing his mind? Was he imagining things?

Alex (with finality):

"Anyway, the fight's over. I've won. You're just not ready to beat me. Not yet."

Liam's shoulders slumped in defeat. His legs trembled, his body aching from the loss. He had been so sure of himself. So certain he could handle anyone who crossed his path. But now, standing before Alex, he felt small, insignificant.

As Alex turned to walk away, Liam stood there for a moment, staring at his opponent's retreating figure. His mind was a whirlpool of questions, none of which made sense.

Liam (thinking):

What is going on? Why does this feel like a déjà vu I can't escape?

He glanced over at the rest of the battlefield, seeing his friends still fighting, still pushing forward. But for Liam, the fight was over. The questions gnawed at him, each one more pressing than the last. And yet, despite the clarity of his defeat, the answers remained out of reach.
