Chapter 126: a strange feeling(4)
The chaotic sounds of combat echoed through the air as Ava stood, eyes locked on Emily. The distant cries of her friends, the clash of metal, and the occasional spell of magic could be heard all around them, but Ava's mind was elsewhere. Her focus was entirely on Emily—on the way she moved, the way she held herself, the way she seemed to anticipate every action Ava made.
Ava felt a strange pull in her chest, a feeling that she couldn't shake, something deep in her gut that told her she knew this person, that there was something more between them than just enemies on a battlefield.
Ava (thinking):
Why does she feel so... familiar?
Ava's breath hitched as she took a step forward. She had no time for this, no time for questions. She needed to focus. But every time she glanced at Emily, that sense of déjà vu grew stronger. It wasn't just Emily. It was the entire group of Dakota's. It was this school, the people she was fighting with, even the air around her. It all felt so... familiar.
Ava (thinking):
This can't be right. I've never met these people before. But why does it feel like I have?
Ava quickly snapped out of her thoughts and took a defensive stance. Emily mirrored her, the air thick with tension. Neither of them moved, as if both were waiting for the other to make the first move.
Finally, Ava broke the silence, lunging at Emily with a sharp kick aimed at her midsection. Emily, quick as ever, dodged the strike with ease, her body swaying gracefully out of the way.
Emily (with a smirk):
"Is that all? I thought you'd put up more of a fight."
Ava's eyes narrowed, frustration bubbling inside her. She wasn't going to let Emily get under her skin. She wasn't going to let any of this—this strange sense of familiarity—distract her.
Ava:
"Just shut up and fight."
She lunged again, this time attempting a series of quick punches. Emily weaved around each one, her movements fluid and effortless. Ava could feel the pressure mounting, the weight of her confusion growing heavier with each passing second.
Ava (thinking):
Why does this feel like something I've done before?
The fight escalated quickly, both of them moving faster, their bodies becoming blurs of motion. But Ava's mind kept drifting back to those questions—the nagging feeling that she had encountered this before.
She blocked one of Emily's strikes and immediately retaliated with a spinning kick. But once again, Emily was one step ahead, dodging the blow with a swift backflip. The strange sense of déjà vu intensified, and Ava's heart skipped a beat.
Ava (thinking):
I've... I've done this before. Why do I know what she's going to do before she does it?
It was like watching a memory play out in front of her—except this wasn't a memory. It was happening right now, in real time. Emily's movements, her expressions, her smug little smile as she dodged every attack—it was all so familiar. Ava felt as though she was caught in a loop she couldn't escape from.
Ava (thinking):
Why am I having these feelings? Why do I keep thinking I know her?
Ava's frustration began to boil over. She wasn't used to feeling like this. She wasn't used to being so... lost. She pushed forward, launching a flurry of strikes, each one faster and more powerful than the last. She had to break through, had to end this fight. But Emily continued to dodge, each movement almost too perfect, too rehearsed.
Ava (gritting her teeth):
"Why won't you just stay still!"
Emily's laughter rang out, light and mocking.
Emily:
"Maybe you're just not fast enough."
Ava growled in response, her frustration growing. She needed to land a hit—she had to.
Ava (thinking):
There has to be something more to this... Why does she feel like someone I've fought before?
Ava suddenly stopped, taking a step back as her thoughts became a whirlwind of confusion. She glanced around, as if looking for an answer in the world around her. She wasn't just fighting Emily. She wasn't just fighting Dakota's group. It was something more—something deeper.
A memory flashed in her mind, a fleeting image of a place she couldn't recognize, a face she couldn't name. She had seen it before, hadn't she? The way the sky looked, the way the earth felt under her feet. It was like a dream she had forgotten, a dream that was just out of reach.
Ava (thinking):
This... this isn't the first time I've been here. I've fought before. I've been through this before. Why can't I remember?
She closed her eyes, trying to shake off the overwhelming sensation. She had to focus. She had to win.
Ava (shaking her head):
"No. I'm not going to let this stop me."
But even as she said it, the doubt lingered in the back of her mind.
Emily didn't give her a chance to think any longer. She attacked with a series of rapid strikes, forcing Ava to defend herself. Each hit came faster than the last, and Ava struggled to keep up, the pressure mounting with every passing second.
Ava's vision blurred slightly as her mind tried to catch up with the fight. She couldn't afford to be distracted—not now, not when everything depended on her.
But as she blocked another one of Emily's strikes, she saw something—something in Emily's eyes. It was the same look, the same cold determination she had seen before. That familiar feeling returned with a vengeance.
Ava (thinking):
Her eyes... I've seen that look before. Where? When?
Emily smirked as she saw Ava's hesitation, taking advantage of the momentary lapse in her defense. With a quick, calculated move, she swept Ava's legs out from under her, sending her crashing to the ground.
Emily (taunting):
"Guess you weren't ready after all."
Ava gasped for air, the wind knocked out of her. She could feel the familiar ache in her muscles, the familiar exhaustion creeping in. It was like déjà vu all over again.
Ava pushed herself up, but her body felt heavier than before. She was growing more and more frustrated with herself. She had to fight, had to push through, but the questions kept circling in her mind, dragging her focus away from the battle.
Ava (thinking):
Why does this feel so familiar? Why do I feel like I've been here before, doing this before?
She clenched her fists, trying to block out the thoughts, trying to focus on the fight at hand. But it wasn't working. The questions were too loud, too pressing. The memory, the feeling of recognition, it all mixed together in a confusing haze.
Ava (thinking):
What am I missing?
Emily took another step forward, eyes gleaming with confidence. Ava could feel the weight of her doubt pressing down on her. She had to end this now, had to stop thinking about the past and focus on the present.
But it was too late. As Ava lunged forward, Emily sidestepped with a swift motion, knocking Ava off balance once again.
Before Ava could react, Emily delivered a powerful kick to her side, sending her sprawling across the ground. Ava gasped for breath, pain coursing through her body. She had lost.
As she lay there, staring up at the sky, her mind a blur of questions, the battle around them seemed to slow.
Ava (thinking):
This isn't over. I'll find the answers. I have to.
