Chapter 94: Surprise Attack
Viviene did not fully know what Gideon was planning, but since her duty was only to carry out Gideon's orders as Baron, she would do so.
She explained that she would count it tomorrow instead, as she had too much work today and her mind felt a little scattered.
Gideon did not make a big issue of it, though he did not want Viviene to delay too long either.
Day turned into night, the soldiers rested, and so did Lena and Lyra. They would continue again tomorrow morning and keep going until everything was distributed.
Gideon met with Lena and the others at the dining table, eating the dinner prepared by the maids. Viviene also sat and ate with them, along with Sheilla and Isabella.
"How many food boxes are ready to be distributed?" Gideon asked.
"About six hundred."
"I see. Then tomorrow we'll have to distribute it in two phases," Gideon replied.
"That's better, to avoid long lines and such," Lena added.
"Lucas will go to Nemora to deliver the food boxes, maybe about half of the total for now," Gideon said.
"I understand. So only three hundred for tomorrow?" Lena asked.
"Yes. Only three hundred."
"Luke," Gideon called.
Luke turned with his mouth still full of food. He slowly swallowed and then answered Gideon.
"Go to Clark's house. Ask him to help record who receives food aid tomorrow," Gideon ordered.
"Understood."
They continued eating until one by one they felt full. Sheilla and Isabella had fallen asleep in their chairs at the table. Viviene carried Sheilla, while one of the maids came to carry Isabella.
Viviene asked Gideon for permission to rest. Gideon nodded, giving her leave to sleep.
Just as Viviene left the table, Lena poured wine into her glass, leaned back in her chair, and looked at Gideon.
"What about the kitsune race?" Lena asked.
Gideon fell silent, glancing back at Viviene as he held out his glass for her to refill with wine.
For now, Gideon could not help them with the limited food supplies in the village. However, he explained something else, that Viviene had been ordered to buy more food from the city.
Maybe the delivery of food aid to the kitsune village could be carried out once the supplies from the city were bought and brought to the village.
Gideon still had to prioritize the safety of his own village, even though Lady Mitsuko was a good friend among the mythic races.
"I'll think about it later," Gideon said.
Lena agreed. In her view, Gideon had already faced too many events and decisions. Burdening him with more right now would not be good for his mind. Maybe Lena could help him later.
"Alright, you all can rest."

One week later.
Rockvalley Village.
From the start of winter to the first week, Gideon and his team managed to distribute food aid to the villagers. One household received one box of food.
Many of them felt helped, saved, and grateful to Gideon and his team. They had never received such attention from their former leader.
Nozel had always been arrogant, selfish, and careless about his people, while Gideon was the complete opposite.
With that much food aid, at least the villagers were safe for a month. But for the second month and beyond, Gideon would need to monitor their situation carefully.
There was not much Gideon and his team could do. Lena was still working on inspections, but since her routines had been so intense at first, her work became lighter later.
Luke and Lyra did not continue the well-digging. Snow had piled up quickly and covered everything. They only did simple tasks like clearing the roads of snow and so on.
Those were easy jobs that could be finished quickly. Luke and Gideon sometimes joined in such work too, and there was no awkwardness between the villagers and their leader.
Time went by quickly as Gideon and the others focused on their work. The temperature at night became colder than during the day. Firewood to keep warm became essential for every villager.
Night came, and Gideon and his team relaxed as usual in the lounge. Their closeness caught Viviene's attention, especially since she was not much older than the members of Gideon's team.
Lena and Viviene no longer argued. They had become close, like new friends. Lyra and Lena accepted Viviene into their circle of friendship.
That allowed Viviene to join Gideon's team while they were relaxing in the Baron's lounge room.
"No tree to decorate. Really sad," Luke joked.
"There are more trees here than in your housing complex," Gideon replied.
"Don't make me remember Earth. Now I miss Johnson."
"Who's Johnson?" Viviene asked.
"My pitbull," Luke replied, turning toward her.
"Johnson is a good dog. I'm sure he'll survive without his owner," Gideon joked.
"Haha!"
Just as they were chatting in the lounge, the door to the residence burst open. A soldier rushed in, wearing his armor.
"Report, Lord Gideon. There's an attack from the Forest Wolf race in the southern area of Rockvalley," the soldier said firmly.
Gideon stood up in shock, not expecting an attack from a race they thought would never strike a human village.
The forest wolves had gone wild, seemingly not caring about the consequences of fighting Gideon.
"Evacuate the villagers to the north. Build a defensive line. Wait for my next orders!" Gideon commanded, understood by the soldier.
"Team. Gear up!"
"Copy, Capt."
Lena and the others rushed back to their rooms to put on their tactical uniforms, bulletproof vests, and military helmets.
He patted Viviene's shoulder, ordering her to stay in the residence and do what was needed to help the evacuating villagers.
Gideon went upstairs, putting on his full military uniform with vest and helmet. Once ready, he stepped outside and saw Lena and the others waiting in front of the armory.
He opened the room, revealing the equipment needed for this situation. For the M4A1, each person carried at least six spare mags plus one loaded.
That was more than enough to push the enemy back.
Grenades were prepared, along with NODs and other gear. This was a critical situation for Rockvalley. Gideon had never expected the forest wolves to attack.
Bian. Do you really want to fight me?
"We're ready," Luke said firmly.
Gideon turned and saw Luke and the others fully geared up. Gideon nodded.
"This is an infantry tactical mission. Target: the Forest Wolf race. Aim below the body."
"Stay sharp. Stick together!" Gideon ordered.
"Copy, Capt."
Once everything was ready, Gideon locked the door and ran out, followed quickly by Luke and the others.
The maids watched them, surprised to see Gideon and his team in such a different form. For the first time, they saw another side of them.
They left the residence and stepped forward, where the Baron's guards stood in formation, holding their tower shields.
Villagers ran north to save themselves.
"Falcon Two. Target at two o'clock. Eliminate fast," Gideon ordered.
"Roger, Capt."
Luke and Lyra ran west to intercept the forest wolves who were circling around to look for openings at the houses. Gideon arrived near Lucas.
"What's the situation?" Gideon asked.
"There are a lot of them, and they're strong. Fighting at night in winter is a bad choice," Lucas explained.
"Focus your soldiers on defense and evacuating the villagers."
"Let me and Lena handle the wolves."
