Chapter 95: Madness of Hunger
Without using suppressors, the gunfire from each rifle rang loud and clear in everyone's ears. Many of them flinched in shock and fear at the same time.
BANG!
The bullets shot forward, striking directly into the bodies of the wolves that came attacking in a guerrilla style. The villagers pulled back, running and stepping to the sides to avoid the conflict.
Gideon aimed his rifle forward, his hawk-like eyes targeting the thighs and legs of the wolves. His goal was to stop the attack without killing them.
Taking them prisoner would be much more effective for Gideon.
"W-What kind of power is that?" Lucas asked.
"That is the power of the ghost team. They are the ones who managed to push back Moko's large army in the south," one soldier replied.
"No wonder they won. This isn't even a battle anymore. This is a slaughter."
Gideon and his team occasionally reloaded, swapping magazines from the ones nearly empty to their spare mags. They were truly trying to save ammunition because of their limited supply.
There was still no word from Jack on whether he could make bullets from the blueprint Gideon gave him or not. Gideon would have to go to their shop to make sure.
"Reload!" Gideon ordered.
Lena and the others did the same. By now, all the villagers had been fully evacuated to the north. Gideon's team also advanced slowly, forcing the wolf race into a corner.
"Go back before I kill you!" Gideon shouted firmly.
The wolves looked at each other one by one. They nodded in response, realizing that their attack had been completely crushed by Gideon and his team.
If they forced their way in, then they would learn what the consequences of their recklessness would be.
When they tried to carry their injured friend, Gideon fired a bullet right at the wolf's feet, startling him.
"Go home."
"But what about them?" one of them asked.
"The wounded will be taken care of by us. You don't need to worry," Gideon answered.
The wolves fell silent, then easily believed Gideon's words. They ran into the forest to return to the wolf village, leaving Rockvalley in chaos.
"All clear!" Gideon declared.
"Lucas!" Gideon called out.
Lucas stepped forward, bowing his head as he stood next to Gideon. He was ready to receive his master's orders.
"Capture the wounded wolves, close their wounds with bandages, and lock them in the village prison," Gideon ordered.
"Place some of your soldiers at the southern and northern gates. Send messengers to Nemora village to prepare for the second wave of wolf attacks."
"I understand, My Lord," Lucas replied.
He went back and began passing Gideon's message to everyone, especially the soldiers.
Luke and Lyra ran closer, clearly saying that they would be overwhelmed if they had to deal with more surprise attacks like this.
"It's time we build our own army, independent and loyal to us," Lena stated firmly.
Gideon nodded. For now, he might focus on building a medieval army relying on swords and armor.
If Jack managed to create bullets, then it would not be impossible for Gideon to ask him to make rifles, like the SIG M17 or M4A1.
But making an M4A1 was complicated and difficult. Gideon doubted Jack could pull it off.
"Luke. You will be the commander of the main force. I assign you to recruit and train the soldiers with modern tactics," Gideon said.
"I understand, Captain."
"Lyra. Go to Nemora and ask Jack about the bullets I ordered. You can leave tomorrow morning."
"Understood, Capt."
Gideon turned to Lena. "You and I will stay in the village. You focus on treating the villagers' wounds. I'll focus on the village's defenses."
"Alright."
"The mission is over. Time to rest."
***
The next day.
Rockvalley Village Prison.
Gideon arrived wearing a tactical shirt and a blue coat lined with white fur. He didn't come alone, but together with Lucas. He also carried a SIG M17 at his waist, prepared for anything bad.
The total number of captured wolves was fifty-six, all wounded by bullets with projectiles still lodged in their bodies. They only had about 5–14 days to live before infection claimed their lives.
The village prison had ten iron cells, all dirty, damp, foul-smelling, and dimly lit. Perfect breeding grounds for bacteria.
One prison cell could hold about ten people. In this case, only seven wolves could be kept inside.
Gideon stopped at one cell, packed with wolves sitting weakly, their legs wrapped with bandages already stained red, showing that the light bleeding hadn't stopped.
Impressive. They're still holding on even though they've been bleeding since last night. The wolves' endurance is truly remarkable.
"S-Sir Gideon?" one wolf asked.
"Don't call me that. We are not friends," Gideon replied coldly.
"Tell me. What was your purpose in attacking Rockvalley? Who led this attack?"
"The wolf village is starving. There's not much food in the forest. We are hungry."
"Rockvalley is a big village. Maybe they had fresh meat we could take," he explained.
Hunger makes people lose their minds. Looks like they're no different.
"Was this an impulsive act or planned?" Gideon asked.
"Bian… village chief Bian ordered us to raid the human village," the wolf replied.
"Those damn wolves! Should we just destroy them?" Lucas asked.
Gideon raised his hand. Attacking the wolf village during winter was unsuitable and risky. He actually had another idea that caught his attention, and Lucas would surely agree.
"Let them all die of hunger and cold."
He turned his head, watching Lucas closely. Today, both Lucas and Gideon had many tasks to finish. For that, they had to move quickly.
"Send troops to Nemora. Make sure the security there is solid."
"The distance from the wolf village to Dergon and Algus is quite far. They won't go there," Gideon answered.
"Understood, My Lord."
"I will go to Kitsune Village."
"Their situation might be threatened by the starving wolves. I must protect that place and the people there."
"What if we evacuate the Kitsune to Dergon? I noticed that the village is lacking in people. So, the Kitsune's presence could help there."
Gideon nodded. That was a good idea, but he wasn't sure how the villagers would react when they found out they would be living in the same village with the Kitsune.
"I'll consider it later."
After finishing his business in the prison, Gideon and Lucas went outside. Carrying little gear, Gideon mounted a horse and prepared to leave.
"Where are you going, Capt?" Lena asked.
Gideon turned, looking at Lena's face reddened by the cold.
"Kitsune Village."
"The wolves are starving. I'm afraid they'll turn vicious and target the Kitsune," Gideon explained.
"Let me come with you!" Lena said firmly.
Maybe by bringing Lena along, she could also convince Mitsuko to evacuate to Dergon for the time being.
Gideon smiled, then cleared his throat and agreed. "Call for the carriage to come. We leave today."
