Chapter 112: Viscount Duncan Hospitality
After everything was ready, Gideon and his team went to the back yard. There, a horse-drawn carriage had already been prepared by the coachman. They could see it clearly.
"Let me be the driver, Capt!" Luke offered.
"Sorry to trouble you, Luke."
Luke nodded without hesitation, even though he had never driven a horse carriage before. Luckily, the coachman explained a lot to him before they departed, especially how to speed up, turn, and stop.
It was easy enough for Luke to understand, not difficult compared to the time he had to drive an M10 Booker tank. He was sure he could handle the carriage safely and without problems.
Gideon and the others said their farewells to Viviene. Viviene smiled, waving her hand, hoping they would remain safe while in the north.
A noble banner was attached to the carriage, a majestic blue as Gideon had requested.
He and Lena entered the carriage, while Luke drove it at a steady pace, leaving the Baron's manor toward the north. Their first destination was Mischo City, about five hours away.
"Let me know if you want to switch," Gideon said through the window.
"Of course. I can make it to Mischo without falling asleep. Don't worry, Capt."
Gideon nodded, closing the curtain and sitting on the soft carriage sofa, with Lena across from him.
They didn't talk much. Instead, Lena used the moment to rest quietly, though she knew riding a carriage was far less smooth than riding in a car.
They crossed through forest roads. No bandits threatened them, only the occasional wild animal in the thick woods.
The rebels had already scattered, ever since their leader had been captured.
That made the journey smooth without any problems. Luke was still awake and not yet sleepy, while Gideon and Lena had already fallen fast asleep inside the carriage.
The long trip pushed through the night until the carriage finally stopped moving when sunlight began to break across the eastern horizon, marking the arrival of morning.
"Gideon… wake up."
Lena gently shook him awake. He rubbed his eyes and yawned, glancing to the side and noticing several townsfolk walking by, some lining up in queues.
The city guards split the lines into two, one for carriages and wagons and another for pedestrians.
At the moment, Luke was in line with merchants' wagons from the southern villages.
"We've arrived?" Gideon asked.
"Yes. Check on Luke's condition."
Gideon nodded, opened the front curtain, and called out, "Luke, situation?"
"A little sleepy, Capt," Luke answered, yawning with heavy eyes.
"Stop. We'll switch."
Luke agreed. Gideon stepped out of the carriage while Luke climbed down from the driver's seat.
The two men swapped places. Luke went inside to sleep and rest, while Gideon took over driving the carriage.
Slowly, the carriage moved forward in line, waiting for their turn to enter the city. One of the guards stopped them, clearly noticing the luxurious carriage Gideon was driving.
Not only that, they were shocked to see Gideon himself seated at the driver's bench, wearing full gear they didn't recognize. Their suspicion grew stronger.
"Who are you?" the guard asked.
Gideon reached into his pocket and tossed the Baron's seal to him. When the guard caught it, his eyes widened. The object in his hand was indeed a Baron's seal, proof of noble status.
"Baron Gideon," Gideon answered.
"O-Of course, my Lord. Please, come through."
The guard quickly returned the seal and cleared the way, unaware that the man driving the carriage was Baron Gideon himself.
The road opened, and Gideon continued forward. From time to time, he told Luke and Lena that they had reached Mischo.
Their next stop was Viscount Duncan's manor, where they would rest before continuing the journey.
Luke was already asleep and didn't respond, while Lena agreed with the plan.
In the early morning, not many people were active yet. The streets were quiet, shops just beginning to open.
Merchant wagons from villages stopped at stores along the way, selling their goods before business truly started.
Gideon's destination wasn't the shops but the city square. With the streets so clear, he reached the gates of Viscount Duncan's estate quickly. Two soldiers stood guard.
"Who are you?" they asked.
"Baron Gideon. I've come to meet Viscount Duncan."
They looked Gideon over, noticing his unusual equipment, and also the blue banner flying above the carriage, bearing the emblem of an eagle's head, rice and cotton, and a golden star.
To them, it was a rare and unique noble symbol.
"Seal?"
Gideon tossed the seal again. The guards caught it and checked it closely. It was authentic. The carriage indeed belonged to Baron Gideon.
Even so, the soldiers of Viscount Duncan glared at him with sharp, cold eyes. Gideon was the man who had slaughtered many in this house. It was only natural that they still felt angry and resentful.
But orders were orders. The gate opened, and Gideon drove the horses inside. They were greeted by the manor's servants. Gideon and his team had arrived suddenly, but the servants didn't mind since they had already been active for over an hour.
Gideon stepped down, followed by Lena and the still-drowsy Luke. He asked the servants to prepare a room for Luke to rest in, but they hesitated at first.
"Has Viscount Duncan not woken yet?"
"He will wake soon, please wait in the lounge, Lord Gideon," one servant explained. Gideon nodded.
They entered the house and sat in the lounge, where servants provided snacks and wine. Luke, feeling the comfort of the sofa, drifted off to sleep again. Gideon just smiled faintly at the sight.
After about an hour of waiting, Viscount Duncan finally came, looking fresh even though he was still in his pajamas.
One servant informed him of Baron Gideon's arrival, which naturally surprised Liam.
Unlike the other Barons he had raised, Gideon felt special to Liam because of his close ties with Earl Ashfield.
If he wanted to, Gideon could have become the Viscount of Mischo by simply asking Norton. But he never did.
"Lord Gideon. I didn't expect you to visit," Viscount Duncan said, holding a glass of wine.
"Thank you for receiving us, Viscount Duncan," Gideon replied.
"Is there something you need? Just say it. Earl Ashfield already told me to look after you, and I don't want to disappoint him," Liam said.
"My friend needs rest. Allow him to sleep in one of your rooms," Gideon requested.
"That's all?" Liam asked.
"Yes. That's all."
Liam smiled. He thought Gideon's visit was about politics, but it wasn't. Even so, Gideon and his team had come in full gear, unlike before.
He suspected something must have happened that forced them to be prepared like this. Better not to disappoint Gideon, so the massacre from before wouldn't repeat.
"Of course. You can rest here as you wish. My servants will prepare food and drinks for you," Liam said.
"Thank you, Viscount Duncan."
"You're loaded with equipment. Is something happening?"
Gideon smiled and shook his head. He still didn't trust Viscount Duncan, so it was better to keep the truth hidden and let Liam remain in the dark.
"Nothing. We just want to shop in the city. It's only a precaution."
"I understand."
