Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Surrender and Negotiation
When Tony recklessly soared through the skies, intending to breach the airspace above the Umbrella Corporation's headquarters, his suit's holographic screen flared to life with a sudden, frantic alarm from JARVIS.
[Warning! Unidentified missile radar lock detected!]
Tony's heart skipped a beat. Beside him, Rhodey reacted faster, quickly asking, "How many missiles are locking onto us?"
[Detected Jericho missile radar locks: 137. The number of locked missiles is still increasing.]
[Detected Tomahawk H1 mid-range air defense missile radar locks: 68.]
[Detected Patriot-3 air defense missile radar locks: 39.]
[Detected...]
As the screen filled with dense warnings of air-defense radar locks, both Tony and Rhodey froze in shock.
"Shit!" Tony couldn't help cursing. "Where the hell did Umbrella get this many air-defense missiles?"
Rhodey immediately stopped flying forward, hovering mid-air with his hands raised in surrender. He even had the nerve to advise, "Honestly, Tony, I've never been locked on by this many missiles in my entire life. If we don't want to get blown to bits, I suggest you raise your hands like me!"
Tony felt incredibly frustrated. Never in his life had he encountered such an absurd situation—defeated before the fight even started. Was he really going to surrender without even facing his opponent?
Unwilling to admit defeat, Tony continued flying forward, stubbornly muttering, "These air-defense missiles are outdated. There's no way they can catch up to the speed of the Mark VII suit."
At that moment, a bright red warning appeared on his holographic screen.
[Sir, radar lock from a Minuteman-III intercontinental ballistic missile has been detected. I must inform you that your odds of survival are exceptionally low.]
JARVIS's deadpan remark finally broke Tony's composure. Nuclear missiles? What kind of company was Umbrella Corporation to have nuclear weapons at its disposal?
This was completely irrational! Who locks onto someone with a nuclear missile before even meeting them face-to-face?
Tony's rage boiled over as he muttered furiously to himself, "Where the hell did Umbrella get nukes? This is insane! What am I supposed to do, test my Mark VII armor against a nuke?"
The Mark VII's titanium-gold alloy wasn't exactly neutron-star material—it wouldn't stand a chance against a nuclear blast.
"Shit! I give up!" Tony finally shouted, stopping mid-air and raising his hands in surrender.
The moment the intercontinental ballistic missile warning appeared, S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters was thrown into chaos.
Jasper Sitwell, a bald agent in a suit, stared in horror at the radar signals on the monitoring screen and shouted, "What the fuck? They actually have intercontinental ballistic missiles!"
Nick Fury, observing the situation remotely, had his already grim expression turn even darker. His frustration finally boiled over, and he cursed, "Motherf—! Someone tell me how the hell Umbrella Corporation got their hands on nukes! Don't tell me this arms company can actually manufacture nuclear weapons?"
At S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, agents whispered among themselves. At this point, it was clear that Umbrella was a force no one could afford to provoke.
Maria Hill, ever composed and professional, turned to Fury and asked, "Director, the agents surrounding Umbrella's headquarters are still waiting for orders. Should we proceed with the original plan and launch a full-scale assault?"
Fury shot her a glare. If she weren't one of his most trusted subordinates, he'd have lost his temper outright.
"An assault? With what? They've got nuclear weapons! Sure, they're probably just trying to intimidate us, but what if they aren't?" Fury had no desire to witness a nuclear explosion above his head.
Suppressing his irritation, he gave the order: "Tell our agents to stand by. No one moves or provokes them. Let Stark handle the negotiations."
The command was relayed via satellite to the scene in Sokovia.
At the perimeter of Umbrella's headquarters, S.H.I.E.L.D.'s special forces immediately ceased all operations, awaiting further developments.
Meanwhile, atop the Umbrella Corporation tower, Carl and Wanda watched as Tony and Rhodey raised their hands in surrender.
Carl felt a sense of relief—at least Tony wasn't foolish enough to test his luck against a nuclear missile.
Wanda, however, looked displeased. Her beautiful face was tinged with anger. She had planned to publicly knock Tony out of the sky as a show of strength. But now, before the fight even started, the other side had surrendered.
It felt like punching a pillow—utterly unsatisfying.
Even so, since the enemy had already surrendered, Wanda restrained her temper. With a wave of her hands, crimson energy flared around her.
Dressed in a blood-red skirt that accentuated her sharp, commanding presence, Wanda floated into the air. She quickly flew out of the office on the top floor of Umbrella's headquarters, heading straight toward the surrendering Tony, intent on mocking her old foe.
Not far behind, Carl levitated himself with telekinesis, following Wanda out of the building.
The two of them, moving at impressive speed, soon reached Tony and Rhodey.
Seeing a beautiful woman in a red dress and a dashing young man in a suit flying toward him without any visible aid, Tony was so shocked that his jaw nearly dropped.
"You're superpowered?" he blurted.
Before Carl could respond, Wanda sneered, "The so-called 'hero' Iron Man—scared out of his wits by a few air-defense missiles. How pathetic."
Tony bristled at her words. This gorgeous woman's sarcasm stoked his anger, and he briefly considered blasting her with a repulsor shot.
But the sheer number of missiles locked onto him—and Fury's directive to negotiate—forced him to swallow his pride. He couldn't risk provoking them, especially when a nuclear missile was in play.
Through gritted teeth, he finally demanded, "Carl Davis, right? CEO of Umbrella. Why is your company selling Jericho missiles to the Middle East? Do you have any idea how many lives have been lost on those battlefields? How many innocent families have been destroyed?"
Carl cut him off mid-sentence. "Stark, spare me the lectures. Umbrella simply sells weapons to those who need them most.
If the United States hadn't invaded the Middle East, those countries wouldn't be retaliating in the first place. You should be questioning the U.S. military—why did they feel the need to invade? What flimsy excuse did they use? 'Freedom for humanity'? Do you actually believe that nonsense?
And let's be clear: even if Umbrella didn't sell them weapons, the Middle East would just buy from other arms dealers. The war in the Middle East wasn't started by Umbrella. At most, we just handed them the knife.
Go ask the American Congress why they're so intent on sending troops to the Middle East for their so-called 'liberation' wars."
