Chapter 224: 48 Hours
The five students stood rooted in the snow, their breaths catching as a warm, radiant sensation flooded their bodies.
It was like sunlight breaking through a winter dawn, soothing and electric. Cuts and gashes that they received in their previous fights, and even more wide and raw from their desperate battle with the colossal slug, faded from their skin, dissolving like ink in a rushing stream.
Bruises that had bloomed purple and black melted away, leaving their flesh unmarred. Jax, clutching his frostbitten hand, stared in disbelief as the blackened, numb fingers twitched, then flushed with healthy color, the searing pain evaporating as if it had never existed.
"W-what...
He said in genuine surprise at how potent and powerful this healing abilities was.
Their exhaustion, a bone-deep weight that had dragged at their every step, lifted like a fog burned away by morning light. Energy surged through them, their stamina restored to its peak once more.
Almost as if they had never fight to begin with.
Lena's eyes also widened, her staff still gripped tightly, embers flickering along its rune-carved surface. She exchanged a glance with Kai, whose braids swayed as she shook her head in awe.
Taro's hammer pulsed faintly, its glow steadying as his strength returned. Finn, still catching his breath, touched his chest where a gash had been moments ago, now gone.
Jax flexed his healed hand, his gruff voice breaking the silence.
"Prez… how the hell did you do that?"
They hadn't seen Adam touch them, nor had they felt or see spell or incantation. Yet the rumors that swirled around Celestine might actually be true.
Rumors that paint the president's ability to heal any wound, cure any ailment, no matter how dire, now seeing this, it now suddenly felt like undeniable truth.
It was for this reason he was treated as very important figure, his power to heal was a power to was irreplaceable to the empire.
"Amazing."
Finn whispered mostly to himself, this potency of healing was not normal at all.
Meanwhile Kai stepped forward, her sharp eyes softening with gratitude.
"Thank you, Prez. We… we owe you our lives twice over now."
Her voice trembled, thick with emotion, but she held his gaze. The others murmured their thanks, their voices a mix of reverence and disbelief, still processing the miracle they had just witnessed.
Hearing this Adam lips curved into a faint, enigmatic smile once more, his piercing gold eyes glinting in the Aurora dark world.
But alas all he did was gave a slight nod, his cape, swaying gently in the biting wind.
Act of kindness like these after all, benefit's him greatly.
By creating more rumors, and giving confirmation to them, it empowers his power even more.
So it was for this reason he acts the way he does, his kindness in the end is just another means to aquire even more power.
Still a collective was better for his Rumor Magic than single person any day.
With that his job was done here.
"Well stay safe."
He said, his tone calm for the most part, as he continue saying.
"I'll see you guys around."
With a final wave, he turned, his boots crunching into the snow as he strode into the heart of the howling blizzard, his figure gradually swallowed by the swirling white.
Keeping his reputation at its peak wasn't just a matter of pride, it was the lifeblood of his power.
As the heir of the Van Hellsing Household, Adam's rumor magic thrived on the awe and stories that spread in his wake, as such the Hellsing family has an entire net worth dedicated just to glaze him, at every step.
Hell, he mostly participate in make a wish programs to make his influence spread more, and more.
Every healed wound, every impossible feat, wove another thread into the tapestry of his legend, amplifying his strength.
"...Man, I really need to find even greater ways to reach out to more people, Nyx suggestion of travelling to other weaker worlds could help with this."
Adam said to himself, as he continue to walk more and more.
Alone now, his mind churned as he trudged through the storm. The students words echoed in his thoughts.
A base, about five miles southwest, a sanctuary for survivors. But the humanoid slug, the variant Lena had described with such dread, clawed at his focus.
Seven feet tall, with an exoskeleton of unyielding ice, wielding magic with a precision that rivaled trained Hunters.
But variant like that means it has greater connection to the Main HIVE, as such finding it would lead him even more closer.
Still he ponder about the fact that should he march to the ice caves in the mountains and hunt it down? Or head to the base, rally the remaining students, and gather more intel?
His instincts tugged him toward the base.
Numbers meant strength, and more information was even better.
If he could unite the survivors, he would have a better shot at facing the variant.
With his decision made, Adam pressed forward, his Monster Energy pulsing faintly around him, a shimmering aura that repelled the storm biting chill.
And also manifesting it as aura it keep away the slugs, as they fear him due to difference in strength.
Naturally he has out Priscilla, that hummed softly in his grip, as it devoured the heat around him, charging rapidly as Adam walk ever closer to his destination.
The five-mile trek was grueling, the snow piling higher with each step, but Adam move on regardless of piling snow, his monster energy melting it as he goes along allowing for him to walk normally through the thickness of it.
His senses sharp.
Because it wasn't long before he saw sight of something up ahead.
As he crested a ridge, a faint plume of smoke curled into the sky, barely visible through the blizzard's veil. His heart quickened, but as he drew closer, a cold weight settled in his chest.
"Is this really the place?!"
Adam asked, a little skeptical.
Given the place was badly damage. And the base he heard about was gone. In its place lay a massive crater, its edges jagged and charred, as if a meteor had struck this area or something.
Splinters of wood littered the snow, remnants of what must have been a grand cabin, its structure crumbled with the telltale glow of Nature magi, given the Astrum residue of the spell used to make the structure remain in the area.
Burn marks scarred the ground, and faint traces of ice or heat magic lingered, sharp and unnatural. Whatever had happened here had been swift and brutal.
Adam knelt, his gloved fingers brushing the scorched earth. He closed his eyes, activating his Desire Sense, to see if he can form a connection and see what had happen here.
"The beast is big, but we are many. Our attacks pilled it, some strong enough to destroy entire mountain ranges. Yet our power equated to nothing. Fire, ice, acid, earth, lasers, dark magic, lore abilities, we bombarded it with everything we have yet we didn't even much as scratch the darn thing."
Memories of a dark skin boy flew through him.
He seems to be the leader here.
From him he felt fear, and panic.
"I don't want to die, please....AHHHHHH."
His scream echoed as the weird creature grabbed him, and ripped him in half, thousands of slugs appear, devouring him whole right after.
"My, my, how tragic."
Adam said as he open his eyes, the lingering desires to live was prominent here, but they where not current desires.
He was looking for survivors, so he tried again.
Reaching out for anything at all, searching for any spark of life, or the will to live, a heartbeat, a fleeting hope, a feeling of fear.
But in the end he found nothing. The silence was absolute, heavy with the absence of life.
When he opened his eyes again, the devastation came into sharp focus.
After all, he could only access past memories from these desires.
While looking at some of the remaining bodies that lay scattered across the snow, their academy crests catching the dim light. Most bore the plain insignias of commoners, their faces frozen in expressions of terror, defiance, or despair.
A few wore the ornate crests of nobles, their enchanted armor and weapons shattered, useless against whatever had struck.
The exam was designed to be brutal, a crucible to forge Hunters, but this was no test...this was a slaughter.
"I wonder if Nyx is even aware of this thing?!"
Adam's said to himself, as his breath clouded in the frigid air as he stood, his jaw tight.
His gaze then drifted to the distant mountain range, their peaks shrouded in swirling storm clouds.
The ice caves Lena had mentioned lay there, and with them, the variant was there if he had to guess.
It was the architect of this massacre, he was sure of it, and if it was hunting all the students, then it would be the best spot to look and pin point all of them hence fort sending minion to intercept them as it would have ethe high point.
Now he could march to the caves now, confront the creature head-on, and rip answers from its frozen corpse.
But another idea sparked, one that drew on his most extraordinary power...Memory Point.
"...Like I always say, time travel fix almost every mistake, or answer basically any unanswered question. Using it to hunt the variant slug would be the viable option here."
He said to himself.
As the attack had likely happened within the last couple of hours. If he could travel 48 hours into the past, he will arrive before the variant struck, with a chance to save the students, fortify the base, and prepare for the creature.
"Yeah, I am guaranteed an attack, I will just wait for the cruel fuck to come to me instead."
With that now decided.
He closed his eyes, centering himself.
As soon a faint green glow enveloped him, as he flashes out of existence.
FLASH!!
When the light cleared, Adam stood in the same spot, but the crater was gone. In its place stood a sturdy wooden cabin, its walls glowing faintly with the verdant pulse of Nature magic.
Laughter and voices spilled from within, students arguing over rations, planning their next hunt, or boasting about their points.
The air felt lighter, the storm less oppressive, the mood was good, and smell of meat hit Adam's nose.
And then a familiar sight came into view.
"Hmmm is that Moca?!"
